They were under mind control for better combat effectiveness, but after you defeat her and snatch the collar, in a twisted sadistic urge Yi decides to leave her die helplessly with her own tools.

Finished my last game session by getting to Eigong phase two. Can already tell this is going to be a boss that will take me a while to beat, so I'm not going to rush it. In the meantime, want to give this game a review.
The good:
Combat - is a rip-off of Sekiro, but in a good way. Prob will stretch the same itch if that is what you are looking for but for fewer $$. Can be a negative if you don't like the parry overreliance.
Art and Writing - Art is cute and striking, able to be fitting in moments of calm and cruelty as the story demands it. The story is also well written, with few glaring potholes and with plenty of well-defined characters.
Level design and Bosses - The levels are fun to traverse moment to moment, well crafted around your movement options in the same way that bosses are crafted around your arsenal. Each boss also has its own personality that shines through during their battle.
The Bad
It's no Hollow Knight - The moment I realized that this game would not be hollow knight is when I looked at the bow sitting in my inventory and realized I never once used it to unlock new areas or secrets. It's so easy to imagine it as a stationary crystal dash to hit far away levers, but alas, it never happened.
Linearity - The game is honestly fairly linear. You get some freedom to pick among the first three bosses and the two remaining ones, but there is no real sense of neurons firing when you find a new traversal ability, since zones are intended for a specific move set and further abilities don't cause them to open up. Even the boss choice order is meaningless since if they are not hard ordered, they don't unlock anything.
The Music - Chinese opera. Chinese opera fricking everywhere.
Music was okay. It didn't stand out, but it was fitting to the action on screen and wasn't agressively bad or distracting. There are a few good tracks i've already listened to outside of the game.
I was considering getting this game but after hearing about some bosses i am hesitating. I looked up a video of lady ethereal and she seems doable, but eigong looks ridiculous. I could not do the white palace/grimm guy/boss rush in hollow knight. I platinumed sekiro with tremendous effort, but i heard the parry timings in 9s are even worse. I realize theres a baby mode but i would rather just not buy the game than do that

Gameplay IS an artistic quality, but because the medium itself is so young relatively to other kinds of art (games which fully combine interactivity, storytelling and presentation emerged around late 80's, i can't think of arcade quarter-sucking cabinets as anything but a product), the way creators treat it has not matured to an extent which neatly interacts with other parts of the medium, which leads to majority treating it as a separate, isolated aspect. The good analogy is sports in this situation: sport competions aren't art since there's usually very little room for self-expression, but it doesn't mean that the rules which such games obey are completely devoid of creativity.
Gameplay CAN be made in such a way that it directly conveys the developer's vision. The most popular example of which is probably a high difficulty level which is used to display the misery or unfairness of the world you partake in, popularized by the souls series in recent years. The best way to make player feel misery is to make his experience miserable.
And we're talking in terms of traditional, well-established mechanics here. There are so many poorly explored areas of mechanical gameplay interactions with which very few developers are willing to interact, and creating it to be a reliable system which can be expanded upon and used to deliver different kind of experiences takes A LOT of creative will. Non-standard input devices? Sure, let me control my game with blinking. Web-page navigation as a main exploration mechanic? Yeah, just let me take some notes so i could decypher the puzzle link myself. Simulating ecosystem to use it as a main gameplay drive? Why not?
My conclusion is, you just hasn't interacted much with actually GOOD games with GOOD gameplay to start treating them as separate artform. And my logic is as follows: if the examples i have mentioned before are art, why more categorized and broad approaches to gameplay design be treated as art of a lower margin too?

No, you cannot avoid it. 90% of everything is at best - mediocre. It's not a bad thing, it's just the it is and has always been. Majority of works are forgotten and do not stand the test of time. But you shape your taste not by finding out what you like, but the opposite - what you actively dislike. I sometimes watch movies with horrible reputation and play generally-hated games (unless they are obviously created as a product) in order to understand what exactly makes them bad, and this can often lead to unexpected discoveries of things you actually enjoy about them, which would make finidng better pieces easier in the future.
Failure of some media is not your personal failure, you can still extract something valuable out of it.

I do, honestly. The unforgiving bosses which will absolutely FRICK you on the first playthrough and often won't teach you how to deal with them directly lead to a pretty miserable experience. Paired with the backdrop of a dying world and constant loss the characters experience, it synergizes quite nicely.
Some developers are in a race to the bottom to see who can make make the most miserable games. Though i agree dark souls isn't that difficult. Hard modes are good. Default or only difficulty being hard is bad
Fromsoft games have overrated difficulty but the games are clearly designed to kick you in the balls if you aren't being careful. Which fits the aesthetic of their settings almost always having a dying or wartorn world where brutality is the norm.
I don't buy that shit at all. Art is just expression of the human soul/spirit. Anything that a human pours their being into can be classified as art. And video games are unique in being able to grant an immersive experience unlike any other form of expression by allowing you to directly control and explore the setting of the game. Any good video game will express the will of its makers to the players in a way that no other medium possibly could.
The reason people don't accept video games as a potential form of art is frankly just a mixture of old morons and stupidly pretentious 'artists' that think sticking a banana to a wall expresses something deep about themselves or the world to others. And these are the exact kind of morons that crap like The Last of Us panders to desperately to for validation.
If anything I'd argue video games are the very epitome of artistic expression. It compiles various artforms (music, artwork, storytelling, etc) into an immersive experience that directly engages the observer and allows them to explore and understand the expression of the work in full. And these artistic qualities are magnified the more passionate and coordinated the people behind the game's development are.
In short, gameplay is a vehicle by which you can explore the culmination of human artistic expression. Trying to dumb it down and say it isn't 'true art' is a sign of genuine mental moronation. That mentality leads to dumb frick hacks like that dipshit Druckmann losing sight of the medium entirely for his work to be accepted as 'true art'.
Gameplay can be artful, it's just that the medium is not mature enough (never will be?) and barely anyone tries to push the limits.
One example I like to bring up is genocide route in Undertale. Player will usually reach it after they complete neutral or good ending, get bored and frick around killing everything (N.B. going on killing spree and reloading a save is a common behavior, Undertale piggybacks off that). Later, it is revealed, that the main antagonist went through the same process. This stimulates the player to see events up to that point from a new perspective. Interactivity of video games is uniquely suited to convey this, because reflecting on your own actions (as opposed to actions of some character) carries more emotional weight.
You kinda dismiss violence in Hotline Miami, but it's a good use of interactivity to put the player in specific emotional state. High difficulty is often implemented for similar purpose. It's a small thing, but it counts.

I partially agree with what you said about "walking simulators and AAA slopfests". My problem is that they rely too heavily on cinematic aspects. As a result, even though such game as a whole can be described as art, they don't make a good argument for why video games as a medium can be artful. Rather, they show that adding minimal gameplay to an already artful movie doesn't completely ruin its artfulness. If a story is better suited to be a movie, pushing it into a video-gamey form can feel somewhat intrusive to gaming community, or at least I've felt that way on a few occasions.
That said, I don't think it's wrong to just ignore all that and just play what looks good/fun for you. No point in declaring "games MUST be art" or "games MUST be purely entertainment", both approaches have their audiences.

it doesn't even take that much. i consider myself pretty casual, but it couldn'tve taken me more than a few hours each to beat lady E and eigong.
eigong in particular was honestly so enjoyable to fight that i was still having fun despite getting my ass kicked. took me dozens of attempts yet the only time i felt any kind of frustration was when i fricked up and ate shit in phase 1.
Angry Manlet was just out for Revenge and killed anyone that wronged him and was gloating.
Eigong is a real test of having learned every single move in the game. I finished her after 1 hour, but i had to actually use the skull kick and jumps for the talisman. She is overall a well designed fight and the only bad part is the talisman hitbox and that she chains a lot of attacks.

parry is different in this game, you can do an imperfect parry no problem and not lose real health. You get internal damage. It doesnt kill you if u go to 0 hp and heals on proper parrys and a lot on unbound counters, which eigong gets plenty of. It is absolutely worth finishing once. Also the Eigong fight has 2 phases per normal ending and 3 phases with the true ending.
I actually managed to do a few cool skips using the bow mixed with talisman dash and airdash

We can't all play video games for over 8 hours a day.
My problem with Eigong is that she does way too much damage. Even her basic combo fricking deletes your healthbar or sends it so deep into red you'll think it's made of ketchup.
It's not that she does too much damage, it's that unless you play perfectly it only takes two hits to die.
And that goes for most bosses. Only with Eigong you're expected to learn new timings five minutes into the fight.
Not to mention that there's really only one way to play against her. You get actively punished when playing in any other way.
So not only is the boss fight tedious, you'll also suddenly need to change your entire playstyle you've been using the last 15 hours.
Perfect parry and equip the jade that increases internal damage regeneration
I've had the most success so far with these jades.
Focus on parrying everything. Including unbounded parrying the red orb attack and the third red slash she does in phase 2.
Also use the water talisman. Full control does more damage at once, but you're going to be able to place a lot more water talismans during the entire fight.

For getting through phase 1, yes. But phase 2? You're barely going to get to 3 orbs.
You can hit her way more often with the water talisman, then hit her with some extra slashes in the time you'd spend charging full control.

The "easiest" thing to mod is filling up the backstory canon with extra fluff inbetween the logs and Sols' backstories. With AI it shouldn't be impossible.
However if you attempt serious shit like trying to rewrite the whole story cause you made his sister be the crazy scientist atheist and Yi the dumbass or make the sister come on the ship then good luck messing with the story in a way that isn't convoluted. It's honestly been really frustrating watching people, especially "speedrunner" types, insist on playing a traditional dodge and strike gameplay style and try as much as possible to ignore parrying and talismans. Things only get worse when the unbound counter enters the mix and suddenly these pro gamers are struggling more than less skilled players who try to do things the intended way.

Aside from just saying to play Sekiro (assuming you haven't alread), it's hard to find any game that can fill the void of Eigong. I'd recommend Ato if you want more eastern themed metroidvanias, but don't expect it to be near the quality of Nine Sols.

No. There are seven tokens. I remember the pink solarian girl's token is not dropped by a mutant, it's in a vent in the research center. You will have to do what I did and go back and search the maps and kill every single mutant to get the tokens you missed.

Gonna be real, a lot of the especially pointless deaths felt like they were there just for shock value. Still liked Lady Ethereal's stage (except that last part before the platforming section ends) but a friend played it and to him it felt like tacky sonic.exe shit, which I cannot blame him for. Jiequan and Goumang's defeat were definitely someone's fetish though
shanhai 9000 was being a stubborn moron from the start and the merchant got what he wanted at the end. it fits the theme of the game that he isn't upset about dying, just glad Yi is there to free his brother
They could have at least animated Shanhai 9000's death better, if nothing else, but they clearly were on a tight budget. I really want to see thst artbook and what content got cut.
