Nintendo has market history that no other console manufacturer does. They're in a completely separate video game business than their competitors, not that they need to be though. The Switch has market penetration that is so dense people are still picking them up for the first time.
Anyway, Nintendo hasn't been on easy street since like 1990. Sega took half of the market away from them shortly after and they were a worthy competitor throughout the entire SNES lifespan. And after that:

Even if it is over for nintendo. Which its not. If another company wanted to buy nintendo and its IP they would have to pay so fricking much money. If microsoft paid 68 billion dollars for activision blizzard. Then nintendo would cost an insane amount of money. Its got to be worth at least 3x. Probably even more, its honestly some of the most valuable IP in the world.
Nintendo as a game company isn't even close to finished. The real issue is that Nintendo is (rightly) afraid to release a traditional home console. On one hand, they could make another hybrid console like the Switch, but there's no way it will be getting many, if any, ports this time around. The power difference between the newest mobile chips and the new Xbox and PlayStation is absolutely crazy and there's no power efficient chip that can compete with them on the horizon. But if they make a normal console, game development once again has to be split between their handheld and home consoles, draining resources. Nintendo knows EA and Ubisoft will attempt to screw Nintendo at every turn (thanks to the Wii U) if they make a home console and ask for Xbox and PlayStation ports. If Nintendo doesn't bend over for them, they just won't give the hypothetical Nintendo home console any ports UNLESS it has amazing sales numbers, and that's assuming it's easy enough to port games to it (unlike porting Xbone games to Switch). Nintendo sort of backed themselves into a corner by going after gimmicks for 15+ years. But at the same time I know they don't want to be a slave to EA and the like, so they were really always going to be shoved into a corner thanks to the utterly cancerous modern video game industry.

Nintendo plans to just keep going with the switch. They will keep iterating on it. Releasing the switch 2, switch 3, etc etc. Just like an iphone. And they will continue to be able to sell games directly to consumers this way. Honestly its a pretty fricking good idea. The real question is, do switch sales keep going strong, and will consumers trade in their old switches for new ones.
