im tired of people sucking its wiener when the gameplay is fricking boring, its cutscenes are fricking long and shittily translated, the music is shit. I assume most people who say its good actually never played the game and watched a youtube video of it or something and declared it the GOAT. Most good FF games and DQ games clear the game even with their simple turn based mechanics.
I heard people wank that game as having one of the ''deepest'' jrpg stories of all time for decades. Yet when I actually got to play all I saw was boiler plate jrpg narrative tropes, except packed with even cringer writing and ten times worse pacing than usual. Literally where are people seeing smart writing in this game. It's like they all got duped by online bloggers, who in their turn don't remember the game, into believing this.
It's the trails in the sky syndrome. Some people fool themselves into thinking that the more text a game has the better its writing. Xenogears writing alternates between being sleep inducing, generic and full of forced melodrama, but because there's so much of it people think there's depth.
I've played the game recently for the first time, and as someone who used to hate slow turn based rpgs, I loved it to the core of my heart. EASILY the best story in a videogame ever

Contrarian to the bones, you went in already with a complaint mindset só of course you hated. Better go back fast to your teenage drama persona-goy slop
Swing and miss, try again. I played (and replayed) several retro jrpgs and xenogears was genuinely one of the worst of them all. The combat, writing, pacing, exploration, literally everything about that game, other than the art style, sucks balls.
>teen drama slop
So you mean xenogears? It has even cringer anime writing than Persona does.
Have you actually replayed Xenogears in recent times? And if so, genuinely, why do you think it has a good story? To me the dialogues fall into the category of either try hard melodrama in the veins of ''can love bloom on the battlefield'' or endless walls of dry text about fake politics and history, none of which is particularly insightful or interesting. The narrative for the most part is very boilerplate jrpg, with the twist there's more (and worse) text along the way. The themes explored are not particularly unique for the genre and they are done just as superficially despite the longer time the game spends talking about them. None of the characters or their struggle feels authentic but instead like the author was trying very hard to create drama.

Yes, I played it recently for the very first time on a psvita of all places, and it blew me away to the point that all other RPGs fell off in my vision, in the story aspect. The gameplay is good but I concede that even in the same timeframe it was released there were other games miles ahead.
This. Xeno games as a whole are the lowest tier imaginable. For decades the obtuse fans of it have been trying to sell it on what it was supposed to be rather than what it is, a tired and braindead square rpg. Gears sucks.
Also for its prominence in the image, its superiority is self evident as not a single poster has questioned its inclusion - Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
They may excel in gameplay, but story wise Xenogears is miles ahead, I'm sorry. Xenogears is actually mature and a story that lives with you long gone after you finished it, and the creativity involved plus the source of the inspiration make it so you experience one of the most special, uniquely weaved stories out there, filled with cosmic-bending concepts you only find on hidden books and closed doors. Midwits are afraid of seriousness and maturity so they call it pretentiousness.

Nah, pop culture gears really isn't a well written or deep story. You've never played Panzer Saga so don't bother replying any more.
FF7 is xenogears for toddlers, you have no idea what you're talking about

both games have similar themes albeit with ff7 being far more shallow
Reminder that one of the original concepts for FF7 pitched by Soraya Saga was about a soldier of fortune with multiple personalities and that Nomura worked briefly on xenogears before being assigned to FF7. Hmm...

no it doesn't, it's theme of identity is limited to cloud and it's done far worse than fei. The theme of death in 7 is a joke, the party forgets about aerith like 30 minutes later while death affects characters for centuries in XG

A rushed ending that was raped and retconned soon after doesn't change anything. XG has multiple apocalyptic events happen in its story btw which are far more fleshed out than meteor

Oh, too specific for a game you only watched a lets play of. Got it. Next time we'll stick to things you understand.
WHOOOOOOOAAAA its got EPISODES...like STAR WARS!
Deep.
Xenosaga is a grand scale space epic that no other game has a comparable scope or writing level too. The URTV's alone mog pretty much the entirity of Xenogears's script
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is dogshit. It literally shits all Innocent Sin by unnecessary dragging shit out in favor of a worse conclusion to the story. Not even the fricking gameplay is improved since now the game basically resolves around "spam fire or light spells" to win without any real strategy.
There's a reason why the series got a literal reboot with Persona 3 and why Atlus pretends Eternal Punishment doesn't exist since it didn't receive any DLC costumes in Persona 5.
I hope one day someone releases a hack for Vagrant Story that allows for quick weapon swapping and sped up spells. It's annoying walking into a room and like three people start buffing themselves and you're forced to watch a feature length movie.
I only played Valkerie Profile and I don't even remember how far I got or if I got a good ending or not. Or what exactly I was doing in that game for the most part.
It's at the very limit of games that are about dice rolls and give you lots of options while not really being very mechanically deep or satisfying. Good time and fun story.
none of them are, you got tricked into playing them. Imagine playing xenosaga 1/2 over and over again without the payoff in 3, that's the entire kiseki series
I don't know what's preventing you from enjoying them but I have been having fun so far. It's sufficiently difficult on hard, I like the characters and the music, the world feels alive, the sidequests are varied... story is pretty adolescent and the games are long-winded, I understand if that put you off.
it starts out innocent enough, FC/SC give an impression that there's good to come but there isn't, it just gets worse. Do yourself a favor and quit after SC
Sky 3rd is often considered to be the best entry in the series since Kevin isn't unlikable/annoying/jobber when compared to Estelle, Lloyd, Rean, Van and the story is self-contained so it's not wrapped in the shitty writing of latter entries like Cold Steel 4 or Reverie.
Frick off contrarian.
>Xenosaga over Xenogears, especially 1
>DDS1 over 2
No, but close
Both 1 and 2 are clearly there
I noticed that just after I posted. The point about Xeno still stands.
xenogears sucks

Name 5 rpgs better than Xenogears story wise
final fantasy 7
panzer dragoon saga
grandia
final fantasy 10
phantasy star iv
name 1 RPG as pretentious as xenogears
>FFX
>Bootleg spirited away
>spirited away
>bootleg the wizard of oz
Has nothing in common with it
It's an isekai, idiot.

You're seen.
Unironically any JRPG.
Xenosaga is a grand scale space epic that no other game has a comparable scope or writing level too. The URTV's alone mog pretty much the entirity of Xenogears's script
Add Grandia and we can talk.
Add parasite eve.
Also what's the name of the game with the girl with twin tails and orange hair
>Doesn't recognize Estelle when she's been posted here a billion times
JRPGs are NOT real RPGs
No arrow you look like that
>Complains about contrarianism
>list has ff3 over likes of 7 and 9, dds over nocturne and p2 over 3 and 4
>no chrono trigger
This is the most contrarian list I have ever seen.
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is dogshit. It literally shits all Innocent Sin by unnecessary dragging shit out in favor of a worse conclusion to the story. Not even the fricking gameplay is improved since now the game basically resolves around "spam fire or light spells" to win without any real strategy.

>dude sex
LMAO! Western trash are not real rpgs.
Pretty based.
You negated a lot of western garbage, but failed to put in some of Lori's stuff or Metal Max. Still, not bad.
*Koei's stuff
its not worth debating because rpgs are all garbage
I hope one day someone releases a hack for Vagrant Story that allows for quick weapon swapping and sped up spells. It's annoying walking into a room and like three people start buffing themselves and you're forced to watch a feature length movie.
This is one of the worst jrpg lists i have seen.
Spoken like a zoomer who never played anything made before 2010
I have been playing games before you were even born, kiddo. That list just sucks.
le slightly obscure jrpg is le better!!!!
Literally seething
>Persona 2
Garbage
>Devil Saga
Garbage
>Xenosaga
Garbage
You got dogshit taste my dude.
One of those isn't like the others
I don't see any Kingdom Hearts games
As you shouldn't
I want to play Persona 2 but i read that MC is a homo, is that true?
He is canon bisexual and involved in a love triangle with Maya and Jun
>Deus Ex is the only western game in list
What a shame, would've loved some WRPGs that's as good as other games
Nice recommendation list though
Final fantasy 3 (6) isn't better than 4 you Black person
>SMT2
Lmao.
Let’s be real, SMT gays rely on people not having played old SMT games so nobody calls them out on their bullshit.
Persona games and SMT3-5 are objectively better than MT1-SMT2
Xenosaga is a literal movie game anon
I think I logged 3 hours on it and maybe played for like 20 minutes
I mean, that’s exactly what everyone who has ever played it says, so I guess that’s just something to be expected.
Way too SMT/Persona/DDS heavy. Otherwise some decent picks
>no xenogears
>no legend of dragoon
>no breathe of fire
dogshit list OP
Jrpgs aren't even good games let alone good rpgs.
they are all outdated. most of the successors build on them and made the whole rpg/demon conversation/combat way better.
persona 2 is too different from 3 so I'm excluding it from my opinion.
Games don't age, all games are terrible now
I only played Valkerie Profile and I don't even remember how far I got or if I got a good ending or not. Or what exactly I was doing in that game for the most part.
I really gotta find the time to just sit down and play Deus Ex. I’ve owned for over a year and barely touched it.
It's at the very limit of games that are about dice rolls and give you lots of options while not really being very mechanically deep or satisfying. Good time and fun story.
>Trails and SC in the image
>not 3rd
I'm still playing through SC right now, is 3rd not good?
none of them are, you got tricked into playing them. Imagine playing xenosaga 1/2 over and over again without the payoff in 3, that's the entire kiseki series
I don't know what's preventing you from enjoying them but I have been having fun so far. So 3rd is going to be at least as good as FC and SC then? Good enough for me.
