Common sense would indicate that a gear effect like "Gain focus on damage dealt" shouldn't trigger on the damage of attacks which cost focus and recover more than the total cost of the ability
I have other gear that increases focus gain % which is the real reason it works. Like a handful of auto attacks fills my gauge entirely up, so obviously a multi-hit rune attack is going to fly up.

They need to be careful with this. The combat has a good flow to it early on while you still need to watch your stamina but they have a stat which increases stamina and gear rolls which increase stamina recovery rate. It's important their gear and RPG stats don't powercreep the gameplay.

No, as far as i can tell the weapon type has no bearing on backstab damage or your stealth ability.
Overall i feel like backstabs aren't something worth going for almost ever as you will get detected if you don't crouch before you can approach, but if you crouch enemies will just walk away from you.
Also the vast majority have patrol patterns that don't allow for them as they will turn towards you before you even have any chance of getting close to them without being noticed.
You can backstab in combat though, just dodge, get behind the homie and stab his ass.

The enemies are very much damage sponges with huge poise that can recover really fast and weightlessly, the potential for random goons to tank several flaming slashes like its nothing is significant
its just very spammy in so many manners, be it ending up roll spam, parry spam, consumable food heal spam....

The mix of art direction and intersection of various lighting/physics tech under the hood is a strong combo here, which isn't surprising given it's the Ori devs but it feels far more alive and vivid than Diablo 4. The oddly proportioned player characters are the only thing that sticks out as off putting.

c'mon I love the game but it being a soulslike isn't the main draw, it's horribly unbalanced and becomes piss easy quickly, there's not enough build diversity, combat doesn't come close to nioh/sop and frankly probably even ER. it's main draw is level design, art direction, exploration and world building. it's a decent start and I hope they take it further but as of now nioh is a much, much better candidate for souls meets diablo ultimate game, and has much more precision to its combat as well.

I beat the game. It was boring. All the levels felt extremely restricted soulless and shitty, and you fight the same enemies over and over, and its not like the group composition of enemies or their positioning makes a difference, you just run up and do an easy combo. Its a boring moron game and I have zero respect for people who enjoy it.

Claymore is a common weapon type so you should find more
3 hours in and some of my observations:
1. combat : unarmed with less armour is unironically the strongest, everything else just feels awkward to play. they fricked up the implementation of parry, it isn't sufficient to parry within the arc of enemy attack and you need to be extremely close to them for it to work. unfortunately (or fortunately?) there is no unarmed parry. plenty of annoying oversights like some low tier enemies don't get staggered when you attack them in the middle of their attack animations and enemy movement doesnt get affected by shallow waters but the player gets bogged down. the roll queue is weird, sometimes if you press the button twice and move after the first roll it doesn't cancel the second roll which happens after a delay.
2. movement : 3D platforming is very imprecise and the fall damage is just insanely punishing. the areas are easy to traverse but platforming is just a pain in the ass in general.
3. mechanics : has plenty of crafting shit which feels like padding, enemies stay dead (maybe they'll respawn after a few days im not sure), durability is meh (one of the main reasons why unarmed is best). craftable health consumables sort of? once you run out of herbs then what? you can kill enemies to make more money and buy herbs but what happens when you run out of enemies as they don't spawn? I am not sure whether there is a flask mechanic later in the game.
4. graphics : it's pretty neat and the way the areas are layered is nice but it's extremely unoptimized right now and the cerim body physiology is just weird.
5. story : for a story centric game, I dont like how the story starts off so unoriginal like it is extremely inspired by bloodborne.
overall I think there might be a good game underneath all the shortcomings if they work on it. multiplayer would be absolute cancer though. I'm refunding it as it can go either way during the early access.

IF you full clear zones/explore, probably 8-10 hours. Then add in the endgame dungeon grind if you want to see higher level weapons like scythes or big ass 2H hammers. You can sprint through the main path if you know where to go, and can beat the bosses, in like 30 minutes

Riven Twins is the furthest for the main story, and clearing out the sewers and killing the mutated Darak guy yeah. This is chapter 1 of the story, and it feels like there is still alot to build up and towards.

I've always been able to refund games that are in early access no questions asked no matter how many hours i put in them. Steam policy seems to be that the 2 hour limit only applies once a game is fully released.
Even with starfield i could refund it after 20 hours playtime since i bought the "early access" (moronic mistake on my part) but again it didn't count as playtime until it was officially released for everyone

I put everything on the lowest from Resolution to Render Scale, to Quality Presets. The game looks like Mario 64 and I still get sub-60 dips with an RTX 3070. There's definitely something wrong with the optimisation.

There is a trials/dungeon that is generated, and that is where that autumn forest is. Its in the town after you beat the Riven Twins
This is showing you when things respawn in old areas. So if its back in the fog, you can go hit the trees and chests again.
Animations/Movement/General Gameplay is fanatastic.
Overall modeling/texture style is great (cutscenes are amazing)
Actual game implementation of lighting and shading is TERRIBLE. Everything has too much rim lighting and bloom that makes the game actually become ugly and unreadable. The cutscenes use the bloom and rim lighting more directed and it works there. In gameplay it's frick ugly.
UI is complete dogshit that looks like a mobile game. A gritty, textured hand painted art directed game, should have a textured, art directed UI, not a weird sci fi mobile slop.
They copied Dark Souls so much but forgot the most important aspect is all of From's games have incredibly textured and customized look to the UI.

Alot it seems but its hard to tell until you just grind the higher level stuff. They said it has over 100 weapons right now, and from using 2 different dual daggers each had a unique moveset. So if every single weapon has a unique moveset, that is pretty impressive.

On its face a stat based loot system runs counter to methodical and carefully crafted combat encounters that appear in a souls game. so you're either aiming at a gambling power fantasy that trivialises its own combat or an meticulously crafted challenge. When you try to do both you are either watering down your loot system to be ineffective, pointless busy work or you are fricking up your difficulty by trivialising the combat challenge.
The aims of both genres are also opposite in terms of environmental design, one is a metroidvania style exploration puzzle the other is a route that is built to be repeated over and over and over and cannot be too complex to navigate or it becomes frustrating.
ARPGs are fricking awful in general and shouldn't be copied in the first place, you repeat lazy content in order to grind for weapons that make grinding for weapons easier faster and more boring. So unless you're going to go all the way and turn it into a casino I dont see the point.

sometimes my character just doesn't dodge when i press the button, also the dodging distance is also too far meaning that sometimes after dodging you need to dodge again to close the gap
also dodging during combat sometimes sends you over the ledge, admittedly this also happens in dark souls but that game has more verticality to prevent this

The controls are fricking horrendous, you need to spam an input or the game just doesn't register it for some reason.

holy shit what a motherfricker. took me 12 attempts just to get to him, and when I finally take him down, the rider gets off and suddenly it's a fricking four phase boss fight. thankfully heavy armor is fricking broken and I had shitloads of fish salads, so I actually first-tried the second half of the fight since his moveset is similar to the greatsword knights you fight along the way and I had plenty of practice. the shield he drops is dogshit btw
I guess there's nothing else in this game now. 16 hours well spent, tbh
