There are chink devices now that blow this out of the water utterly, so they have to scaremonger against those with FUD, but the return and repair rate on the deck is astronomically high, and the hardware is very poor indeed, so they lose that one, too. Ultimately, for attention, they cry about emulating the switch, but who the hell wants to do that? Anyone who cares about switch games would have a switch by now.
The AYN Loki Max is like 799 dollars (got mine for 650), and is twice as performant, while having a 1080p screen, and being ACTUALLY portable? Oh, bigger battery, too.
while i think the loki max is the most salient alternative to the steam deck, you have to consider a few things.
1) double the price even with all the discounts and coupons you can muster
2) AYN still has a backlog of odin devices that have not been honored since last year. this is putting a lot of faith in what essentially amounts to a kickstarter
3) the battery in the loki max is only 46Wh yet also using the 6800U which is going to be a considerably more powerhungry chip
and of course this isn't including any of the general concerns with obtaining a chinese handheld. the potential fees and hassle of goods being lost in customs (yes you can wait for resellers to obtain them locally but you are paying a premium on the price for it). the spotty software support, the lack of a warranty or ease of replacement etc. etc.
and then i beg to ask, what is it exactly that you want to do on the loki max that you cannot do currently on the steam deck? if anything, you are doing less due to the lack of the unique control schema and trackpads.
the steamdeck, at its price point, is straddling the best of both worlds. by the time it has become redudant (an amass of AAA games that are not playable on the device or run too shittily), valve will have a new model.
in my opinion, the most successful devices to exist in this space are going to be on the lower end for retro gaming handhelds (your anbernics and what not. essentially making the most cost efficient and ergonomic device to play portable gamecube/wii/ps2 etc.) OR going to the extreme high end like your GPD Win Max 2 which offers something unique within the space of being a highly functional PC as well as a gaming device.

I don't think that is true. Zen3+ is not going to be more power hungry than zen2 in any way that isn't made up by the extra battery.

I'm using a Dell WD19 docking station, everything seems to work properly. If you can't find some deal on it or already have one I'm not sure I'd recommend it due to the price though.
I feel like that's probably overkill - there's no way the Steam Deck can drive more than a single external monitor without overheating horribly. I've just been using the dock that came with my pinephone, personally.
Not sure what you're thinking about, but driving monitors isn't some sort of particularly strenuous task for modern PCs. I have the dock connected to 2 4k monitors, both running 60Hz for desktop mode and there's no problem using those along with the built-in screen. I tried using 3 external monitors (the dock has connections for that as you can see) but the 3rd one didn't work, I'm not sure here whether that's limited support on the dock side, whether resolution is too high (all monitors were 4k) or whether the Deck itself cannot do more than 2 video outputs. Also tried running my primary screen at 4k 120Hz and while the Deck does see the refresh rate and allows me to pick it in the settings, there's no image on the monitor. Again I don't know whether the Deck or the dock are to blame. Still with 2 4k 60Hz screens working I'm fine with it, that's more than enough for anything I use desktop mode for.

You motherfrickers lied to me. Xenoblade Definitive Edition and 2 on Yuzu runs like shit on the Deck. I did everything on the guide, recompiling shader cache, capping to 60hz, not messing with the dynamic resolution etc etc... And it still runs at shitty 25fps for XC2 and jittery unstable 30fps on XCDE
Yeah last time I tried XC2 on my desktop (5950X, 2080 Ti at the time) it barely managed a somewhat stable 30FPS albeit with increased resolution. Anyway it was unstable and rickety enough that I didn't even bother testing it on my Deck, no way it runs well, the emulators would need another significant leap in performance for that to happen.
XC2 is a weird case. Most of the problems with it are purely the fault of mesa on the deck. Definitely won't be possible to run at 60fps without FSR though.

Is that so? It has been multiple months since I tried it on my PC but if that's the case then the emulators must've gotten a lot better in that time if the only thing in the way of running XC2 on Deck-level hardware are software issues outside the emulators themselves.

Projecting much? Regardless, I didn't buy DE. I emulated it. I do, however, own the old Wii version. It is better. This is a fact.
It's handheld.
Everything else is a downgrade.
If you have a use case for it, you'll just have to deal with all of it. small screen, low res, low battery.
If you want a portable, then laptops and tablets are much better options.
And if you just want to emulate old games, a chinese emulation handheld is a better choice.
But if you want to play games at 720p, 30-60FPS on the go with a device in your hand while you play, then a Steam Deck for now is a good choice.
However, there's lots of great improvements on the horizon with more chips getting Ryuzen 6800Us and other really competent chips so it just makes sense to get one of those if you don't have a reservation coming up.
I ordered the $600 one on the day preorders went live, but then I heard the screen looks worse so I cancelled my order and changed to the middle option, that was march 1st I don't think I'm getting one any time soon lol.

I bought a Tripp-Lite (non generic) USB-C 3.2 extender cable
When using the extender cable, it charges correctly, USB drives work, Ethernet works

Revision might never even happen cause it could be the usual valve on off. The battery life depends on how you're running it. If you have no tweaks and try to run everything on full, you're looking at 2 hours. If you tweak shit and lower settings, you'll get more life.
The fact that a portable of any kind can run "current-gen" AAA games is astounding and no I wouldn't expect it to keep on with that level of performance for future games without some kind of upgrade path

This was the only issue that would've prevented me from ordering. Nice to know it isn't. It's even better that that's the intake vent, not the exit so I don't have to worry about this overheating the battery.

Except it is. Not blocking the vents doesn't mean it's not affecting the thermals. Steam Deck heats up mostly in the back middle, and putting anything there could severely limit the heat dissipation.
The best example of this are phone cases, if you run something extremely demanding on your phone like Genshin Impact, it will get hotter twice as fast when the phone is in any kind of case, and it will take much longer too cool down, because the case is restricting heat dissipation between the device and outside environment.

Got some analog caps because I found the sticks a bit too slippery, helped a lot more than I thought it would.
Sadly the usb c hub I got kinda sucks at the moment. Gaming mode doesn't have resolution switching so at 4k I am locked to 30fps which is basically unplayable since it fricks up a lot of games. Feels like a really simple thing they should implement soon. I can frick around in desktop mode with res but it honestly feels really janky and big picture mode flat out sucks.
Better performance in some games, worse in others. Better compatibility. Worse UI. Lack of SteamOS unique features, like built-in FSR, the ability to change the monitor refresh rate, quick resume.

in my opinion, the line is drawn somewhere between "retro game handhelds" and "UMPCS". something like a GPD Win Max is pushing on the frontier of that border if not fully crossed over. that is a device that is largely biased towards PC more than it is gaming.
devices like the steamdeck/retro handhelds are biased in the other direction. and i find steam has a stronger case for being video games by being so strongly integrated with the largest digital storefront for video games currently in existence.

On my Switch I only have to launch Tinfoil and pick the game I want right from the console itself.
With the deck it seems quite demanding and I dont' play competitive games, let alone on a handheld.

3) the battery in the loki max is only 46Wh yet also using the 6800U which is going to be a considerably more powerhungry chip
and of course this isn't including any of the general concerns with obtaining a chinese handheld. the potential fees and hassle of goods being lost in customs (yes you can wait for resellers to obtain them locally but you are paying a premium on the price for it). the spotty software support, the lack of a warranty or ease of replacement etc. etc.
and then i beg to ask, what is it exactly that you want to do on the loki max that you cannot do currently on the steam deck? if anything, you are doing less due to the lack of the unique control schema and trackpads.
the steamdeck, at its price point, is straddling the best of both worlds. by the time it has become redudant (an amass of AAA games that are not playable on the device or run too shittily), valve will have a new model.

Make sure you refresh rate is 60 and the framerate cap if set to 60 or off. A lot of emulators just shit the bed with 40hz or external framerate caps.

Everything a pc does but in your hands, it's incredibly comfy. For the price point you really can't go wrong because the hardware is great. Also for the batterygays it gets the same battery life as the switch while on a much larger screen with significantly better performance, it's really fine.

I'm using a Dell WD19 docking station, everything seems to work properly. If you can't find some deal on it or already have one I'm not sure I'd recommend it due to the price though.
I feel like that's probably overkill - there's no way the Steam Deck can drive more than a single external monitor without overheating horribly. I've just been using the dock that came with my pinephone, personally.
Not sure what you're thinking about, but driving monitors isn't some sort of particularly strenuous task for modern PCs. I have the dock connected to 2 4k monitors, both running 60Hz for desktop mode and there's no problem using those along with the built-in screen. I tried using 3 external monitors (the dock has connections for that as you can see) but the 3rd one didn't work, I'm not sure here whether that's limited support on the dock side, whether resolution is too high (all monitors were 4k) or whether the Deck itself cannot do more than 2 video outputs. Also tried running my primary screen at 4k 120Hz and while the Deck does see the refresh rate and allows me to pick it in the settings, there's no image on the monitor. Again I don't know whether the Deck or the dock are to blame. Still with 2 4k 60Hz screens working I'm fine with it, that's more than enough for anything I use desktop mode for.

Yeah last time I tried XC2 on my desktop (5950X, 2080 Ti at the time) it barely managed a somewhat stable 30FPS albeit with increased resolution. Anyway it was unstable and rickety enough that I didn't even bother testing it on my Deck, no way it runs well, the emulators would need another significant leap in performance for that to happen.
XC2 is a weird case. Most of the problems with it are purely the fault of mesa on the deck. Definitely won't be possible to run at 60fps without FSR though.
Is that so? It has been multiple months since I tried it on my PC but if that's the case then the emulators must've gotten a lot better in that time if the only thing in the way of running XC2 on Deck-level hardware are software issues outside the emulators themselves.

I bought a Tripp-Lite (non generic) USB-C 3.2 extender cable
When using the extender cable, it charges correctly, USB drives work, Ethernet works

I don't notice input lag as much on controllers compared to mice. same for PC when we used to use vsync 15 years ago I could feel the vsync input lag on the mouse but not so much via contoller.

Revision might never even happen cause it could be the usual valve on off. The battery life depends on how you're running it. If you have no tweaks and try to run everything on full, you're looking at 2 hours. If you tweak shit and lower settings, you'll get more life.

Except it is. Not blocking the vents doesn't mean it's not affecting the thermals. Steam Deck heats up mostly in the back middle, and putting anything there could severely limit the heat dissipation.
The best example of this are phone cases, if you run something extremely demanding on your phone like Genshin Impact, it will get hotter twice as fast when the phone is in any kind of case, and it will take much longer too cool down, because the case is restricting heat dissipation between the device and outside environment.

The admin is called "Cherie" (who will never be a woman), and from the way they would message each other in these threads once they hit 500 posts, other members were Armoroh, ziggy and Faze...I think it was Faze.
One of them posted a month or so after that Armorog (Armo) had go rogue and was calling cherie by their deadname of Steve, and started fricking up their threads.

Yes. Black souls is just your average RPG Maker game, works like every other one. I'd recommend setting it up via lutris and not steam in a shared prefix so you don't need to install the RTP a million times for every RPG Maker game.

Got some analog caps because I found the sticks a bit too slippery, helped a lot more than I thought it would.
Sadly the usb c hub I got kinda sucks at the moment. Gaming mode doesn't have resolution switching so at 4k I am locked to 30fps which is basically unplayable since it fricks up a lot of games. Feels like a really simple thing they should implement soon. I can frick around in desktop mode with res but it honestly feels really janky and big picture mode flat out sucks.
What are the downsides to just putting windows on this? What am I going to miss out on, realistically speaking?
Better performance in some games, worse in others. Better compatibility. Worse UI. Lack of SteamOS unique features, like built-in FSR, the ability to change the monitor refresh rate, quick resume.

it is becoming harder and harder to distinguish these devices
especially when you think about how games have migrated from physical objects to digital storefronts.
in my opinion, the line is drawn somewhere between "retro game handhelds" and "UMPCS". something like a GPD Win Max is pushing on the frontier of that border if not fully crossed over. that is a device that is largely biased towards PC more than it is gaming.
devices like the steamdeck/retro handhelds are biased in the other direction. and i find steam has a stronger case for being video games by being so strongly integrated with the largest digital storefront for video games currently in existence.

I did everything on the guide, recompiling shader cache, capping to 60hz, not messing with the dynamic resolution etc etc... And it still runs at shitty 25fps for XC2 and jittery unstable 30fps on XCDE

What did you expect, locked 60 FPS? This isn't achievable even on desktop PCs. Those games run at 20-30 FPS on Switch as well.
I would expect it to run smoothly at 30fps at least considering that's what people have complained about on the switch. If it can't do that, then the frick's the point in emulating it at all on the deck.
Also frick off, I played the wii version when it came out here in Europe and it was one of the ugliest games released on the wii.

On my Switch I only have to launch Tinfoil and pick the game I want right from the console itself.
With the deck it seems quite demanding and I dont' play competitive games, let alone on a handheld.
Same thing goes for emulation, too many steps and the quality isn't that great either.
So for now it will gather dust I guess, but it's a nice to have.
