Ocarina of Time

I just finished this for the first time. It was pretty cool. I can see how it would have been mind-blowing back in 1998. Having played Zelda games that came after, OoT feels like the sort of template that those ones would add to (to varying levels of success), so going back it does feel a bit basic. I did emulate it but the only changes I made were increasing the text speed and fps, which made it far more enjoyable for me.

One of my earliest gaming memories was going to someone’s house and seeing them fight Ganondorf. Back then he seemed unbeatable to me, but as an adult he wasn’t very difficult. The bongo guy gave me far more grief.

The music is one of the best parts. So many classic tracks come from this game. It really elevates the rather simple story and makes it feel important.

I enjoyed the stuff outside the dungeons often more than the dungeons themselves, so maybe MM will give me more of that since there are only a couple of dungeons.

So is it the greatest Zelda game ever? Well if you consider how big of a leap forward it was at the time it’s not hard to see why people would say it was. In other words, if you compare games to other games that were out when they released, OoT could be easily be called one of the greatest games ever. Playing it in 2024 it didn’t blow me away, but I still enjoyed my time with it and I’m glad to finally have it under my belt.

What do you think of it?

Zelda 1 and 2 are my favorites. Ocarina is third but i just prefer gameplay to cutscenes and fluff.

Ganandorf was such a let down, just a glorified Mario tennis match. most bosses were dumb and easy, but I enjoyed it for it's simplicity, even though, at times it's way too simple.

Do you have to shoot arrows and approach your opponents to hit them with a sword after you hit them with the ball in Mario Tennis? If so, I should play it, sounds fun!

No, it's just an exaggeration, I just think it's funny posting that gif and saying that. Though, I wasn't impressed with oots bosses... But Mario tennis on gbc is a great game and yes you should play it.

It's just ALttP (aka the worst Zelda) in 3D. Z-targeting is of course huge and the OST is pretty great though.

When I played OoT back in the day, the game and music blew my mind and Yusuke Nakano's lovely artwork in the manual fueled my imagination, It was the catalyst that got me interested in drawing. OoT and Majora's art was just so magical.

The artwork and character designs are amazing. Ganondorf and Skull Kid in particular both look awesome.

It was the defacto Zelda game until Twilight Princess took the reigns and ran with them.

It's a great game, and literally every Zelda game after MM feels worse than it.

Playing through TP right now and the movement/combat feels like absolute dogshit.

      >Playing through TP right now and the movement/combat feels like absolute dogshit.

I really don't understand people who say OoT's controls have 'aged'. Like, compared to basically ever action/adventure game released later, it has extremely tight and nuanced controls. The devs absolutely put their all into making it feel good to control and Link really feels like an extension of yourself in the world he's in.

        Because people are fricking moronic.

case and point, because Ocarina of Time stands aged by two decades and you can't even comprehend how.

So this is the intellect of OoT detractors.

TP controls are responsive but the problem is everything feels weightless. Everything in OoT and MM has a lot of weight and momentum to it and it feels great

        >TP controls are responsive
NTA, but not really. Like with WW (and probably Skyward Sword, wouldn't know), the physics are jerky and over-animated, such as when you "Z/L-Target" side-jump: the camera jerks in a delayed way after you jump, while in OoT and MM, it never has a delay.

Is there currently a way to play Majora’s Mask at a higher framerate or will we have to wait for the next Ship of Harkinian release?

Oingo Boingo once because I thought I could beat him with just a few hearts, I don’t remember the other.
