Steam has very few games that don't work in offline mode. I own over 600 games on steam and have only ran into 3 or so that didn't work completely offline. Steam also doesn't require you to check in every 30 days, once you're offline you can play your games forever while offline. Finally, don't just assume because one anon disagrees with a position that they automatically support another, it makes you look dumb. While I myself support steam to the most part, you have no idea how the anon you replied to feels.

I've heard one too many jokes about offline games being too OP and I hate it because it's real, this superflous "service" bullshit has gone too long and too far but companies can do it whenever they want to because "it's their right, they can do whatever, don't buy the game". Now I never gave a single frick about any pathetic attempts at Blizzard to cash in with the easiest nostalgia bait I've ever come across but I know lots of people do, you WILL buy WoW classic or you're not a true OG they feel. sp characters dont expire. ladder characters get demoted to nonladder if you dont play for however many days it was. nothing deletes your characters. youre remembering wrong or your parent/sibling deleted your shit.
Ladder characters in original D2 would be removed from ladder games, you could still make custom private games.
SP Characters were never deleted.

If you're going to play singleplayer, just play the original. The only reason I bought D2R was for fresh online play with some QoL changes. I still have my backed up portable Diablo II and PD2 installs which I use for offline characters.
