It's two-fold, really. Had they simply said they wanted to focus on mainstream appeal action horror but only going forwards after SH2R, that still wouldn't have been good because it just makes it sound like they have no fricking faith in their ability to make effective psychological horror, presumably including SH2R. The fact that they had the brass balls to state that it's actually going to be included is just a whole extra level of embarassing.

Konami just keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over. No hyperbole but Silent Hill 2 is the WORST possible game choice for a remake. Not only do they make a mistake of doing this but then they also choose the WORST possible developer to handle it in Bloober. They are just repeating the Summer of Silent Hill in 2012.

I had zero faith in Konami once they went full pachinko. From trying to make Castlevania into GoW or running the MGS franchise in the dirt with Survive. They've tried remaking Silent Hill before with Homecoming when they decided to remove the combat in lieu of shitty hallway chase sections. Not to mention the abysmal SH Remaster. Anyone who has even and inkling of faith in Konami deserves to be disappointed. I cant believe people think the MGS3 Remake isnt going to be a shit show either.

Watch this educational video, it's confirmed time and time again.

Summarizing, horror games simply won't be scary anymore because the people funding this shit demand to make the games more accessible to the public / include mechanics considered popular at the time.... So basically, reduce the horror.
These statements likely weren't his idea, he's just trying to make it sound like it's on purpose and "it's gonna be even better than before!" but the team was 100% forced by investors into adding action because that's how other popular horror games are now.
In the video I'm posting there's lots of examples of what goes on behind the scenes. Devs know what they should be doing but they're rarely allowed to.

Not him but the car door now being closed is the biggest one. When I first played the original game on release I thought that it was strange that the car was sloppily parked with the door wide open. I always took it as Jame's experiencing melancholy and not giving a frick...not in some super bad ass IM GOING INSANNNE type of way but more in a literally I don't care to notice type of mind state. The door being closed removes all of that initial wonder at the very opening scene.

        Anonymous

the original feels like an artist interpretation of the given scenery, done with a realistic approach but still with the artist style and vision of the given scenery, it oozes with personality, it feels like even as a still image, it still tells a story, not only about what's going on, but also about the stylistic approach to how the story is told.
the remake feels like a photo of the actual place, where the only "artistic" interpretation was some photoshop filtering, all done with no personality cause "muh realism" so everything has to look like real life.

the original feels like your crazy grandpa telling you a scary bed story, where he enriches the description with foul words, each intentionally over-acted with tones of disgust as he describes the oozy oil stains on the ground as so black and putrid they almost feels alive and as if it could suddenly start moving on its own, and the restroom feeling like some wicked nest, as if some weird creature living in it could suddenly come out and try to grab you as its next meal, all of it done with exaggerated descriptions not of how things looked but of how they felt, to which you go "EEEEEWWWW.....MORE! MORE!!!"
the remake feels like your office working dad coming back from his job and he just takes an old pic and goes "it was rainy, there was a car, it was parked, there was fog, oil stains on the ground, and also a decadent restroom on the side, the end"

Look at this scene, what can you feel and infer from just looking at this layout. This shit is why directors are important anon, you dont think this stuff matters till you realize when you feel they dont care about it because the scene tells you nothing, its just stuff for the character to interact with not stuff that tells a story itself with how its presented.
        >parked in a designated parking space, he has conciously pulled up and aimed for a parking space, rather than just seeming like he stopped his car and walked out like hes no thinking about things he would think about if he was in a right headspace, like fricking parking correctly
        >door is closed, like he intends to come back and is concerned for the well being of the car. Where in the original it looks abandoned, which given James introduction, suggests he doesnt intend to return despite what hes saying
Its not just "the door is closed, different is bad!" the fricking set is inferior to the original scene.

I would agree, but knowing Bloobers history, horror is completely devoid of subtlety.

Like I can see the scene where you come across a dead guy infront of a tv and you cant see that it is literally James model because of the camera and its replicating the "truth" when he watches the video, they are going to have it so that you can investigate the body and see that it has the face removed and it says a comment like "hes wearing my exactly clothes, what the frick is going on here", rather than just leaving it as something to ponder and on hindsight know what it was depicting.

One thing that sticks out is how the parking apaces are designed. Why are only some angled and the concrete ends not aligned? Also why is that corner so ruved? those trees are too full of life. having a grand view of the mountains down plays the isolation fact, it makes you feel like there is something else out there. it's way too clean for some reason. the door's not shut implying he cares about something like that. there are no sewer grates, something that is essential to build a base level of grunge.

Thematically? Probably not but it shows a lack of care for the game’s time period in which it took place. Back then it was common for public restrooms to have no doors especially at rest stops in rural areas.

        >>>The bathroom door

That's probably the one things that actually bothered me (and the car door, which is a good way to prompt you to check the car and get the map, teaching you that you have to interact with things without a visual UI prompt).
Anyway, i liked the old door because the complete darkness is more unsettling than just a closed door, and makes it feel as if you emerged from somewhere sinister.

      I have never played game.
      >car door open, combined with the sloppy parking job shows disregard or a casually uncaring attitude toward the man's current situation.
The car is parked in a spit, but poorly. The man is either lazy or a bad driver. Maybe depressed, but it's less clear.
      >the lake occupies a large portion of view and seems imposing, overwhelming, like you could get swallowed up and lost, with only the slightest barrier keeping the man from this fate
The lake is obscured by trees and the man is intentionally in the only spot that can view it. The lake feels more like an escape or freedom that the man yearns for
      >the man himself is leaning against the precipice, he is literally and figuratively close to the edge of something beyond him
The man stands tall, it gives off the impression of determination to be in that spot and push forward through into the figurative lake
      >the building is open, it isn't shelter, it's unsecured. The view inside is dark, unlit, and unknown. This is a place you don't want to go, but might have to.
The building has a door, and is likely fully lit inside. It is a shelter from the elements if need be, and continues to the overall mundainity of the man's situation.

Just some obvious stuff from an outside observer.

The sad part about this article is that I actually would be happy to hear about this shift if Silent Hill 2 wasn't the first project they're doing this with. Bloober has basically just made 2deep4u walking simulators for the past decade, in which they've all been trash. Then focusing more on gameplay elements rather than just the "mood" as they put it is actually a good thing. I want more horror games that put thought into how you play them rather than just "experience" them.

But, they're making this statement with the SH2 Remake as their first effort at appealing to a broader audience with action.

    SH2.

The game that is nearly entirely about atmosphere and story. The one game where they SHOULD focus on things like the experience.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Bloober is everything wrong with horror games wrapped up into a single dev. Anyone who had hope that they could do SH2 justice after the shit show that was The Medium or The Blair Witch is fricking stupid.

I guarantee you they never said they were giving up psychological horror for the mass market for SH2 because they'd have to completely rewrite the plot of SH2 for that to be true and they're obviously not going to do that.

I'm so fricking tired of morons using the term "psychological horror" thinking it means "slow burner, subtle, for intelligent people only, blah blah blah". It does not mean any of that bullshit. It just means it's a horror story where mental illness is the "antagonist". The Babadook is not psychological horror because it's for big brains only and normies think it's boring. It's psychological horror because it's a horror movie about a woman going crazy. That's it. Remove the twist and the movie instantly ceases to be psychological horror.

          >“This year is like closing the era of making psychological horror games,” studio co-founder Piotr Babieno told Engadget. “Right now we are going into Bloober Team 3.0, making mass-market horror.”

          >Bloober is not abandoning horror as a whole, but it is shifting focus. Over the past decade, the studio cemented itself as a powerhouse in the realm of psychological horror games, releasing the Layers of Fear franchise, Observer, Blair Witch and The Medium, all of which generated terror through narrative and environmental cues (otherwise known as “vibes”). Because of these design choices, Bloober games have jokingly been called “walking simulators,” a description that Babieno didn’t deny.

“>We focused on the story, we focused on the mood, we focused on the quality of graphics and music, but we didn’t put a lot of attention on the gameplay mechanics,” Babieno said. “It wasn’t our target. For frick's sake, people, the definition of psychological horror is really not that hard to understand. Here's a big tip: if mental illness is not an major element of the story then it's almost certainly not psychological horror.

Going forward, developers at Bloober will rely on action and player input to generate disquiet, and they hope that this nudge in creative direction will drastically expand the studio’s audience. This mechanics-first ethos was actually implemented internally in 2019, when Bloober began building the remake of Silent Hill 2 for Konami.

Silent Hill 2 is an action game. Layers of Fear is a psychological horror game. If it has combat it's not psychological.

Why do people not understand that Bloober equate psychological with "no combat"?

It's almost like Walter is supposed to be insane or something. It's almost like years of living a miserable life of suffering, being abandoned by your parents at birth, being sent to Silent Hill orphanage to be abused there by cults teaching like other kids there, spending your adulthood as a hobo on the streets, etc, etc, can make (You) go insane and seek happiness in any way possible. It's almost like there's a symbolism related to motherhood and childbirth with Henry going to the otherworld version of Ashfield by crawling through a hole (that gets bigger every time he enters) in the apartment and coming out on the other side in a position that newborn child lias at birth.

        >add appropriate enemies to the location instead of shit like dogs in a subway, and gorillas in the appartments. The baby thing was appropriate to its location in the tower for example, the rest feel like shit picked at random with no relation to the characters or the location
        >remove burp monster, replace it with something more interesting than just a large zombie
        >remove ghosts till second half of the game where you have to backtrack, it is the ghost of the victim that follows you around instead of a whole crew of them. make them move slower, them ripping off at mach speed makes it so the player is always racing and trying to just bob and weave, rather than feel like they are being slowly cornered, and give them some cool environmental effects like wherever they pass all the light go out as they move past things etc, something to make them feel like they are different rather than just an annoying as frick enemy that wastes resources being near
        >make maps less open, there isnt a single narrow space in the whole game because they are trying to hard to replicate real locations
Seriously, I feel like the enemies and their placement is why this didnt land. Its like if you went into the hospital in the other games and there was just generic zombies, it just doesnt hit the same. If you cant change the story, at least add something that gives Henry some attatchment to it.

This is why I feel if they should remake any Silent Hill it should've been 4. The others are fine as they were but 4 had a solid foundation it just fumbles it in areas which causes it to fall short. I also think the idea of being trapped in your own home would hit harder for people now post pandemic.

            Anonymous

Thats how remakes should work in a perfect world and that includes movies. They shouldnt be remaking games that are already considered masterpieces they should remake games that were flawed but the core concept/story/gameloop was good. Funny enough the OG RE1 remake is kind of a good example. The OG game was kinda shit and the voice acting legendary and they remade it into a much better game.

It's easier to sell a remake of something people already like I suppose. Shame, there's plenty of games that don't land but deserve a second chance to reach their full potential. I mean there's a reason they chose to remake 2 and skip 1 entirely, it's because 2 is the one with the biggest reach. Even non-Silent Hill fans know 2.

The original SH2 is more of an action game than any game Bloober has made in the last decade. Of course Bloober should focus more on the action for the SH2 remake.

SH2 is a rather mass-market friendly game and better than any of the shit they put out.

I think maybe the nicest thing I can say is that in the Blair Witch game at least they added some amusing little minigames on the main character's cellphone. That's it, the one and only compliment I can give Bloober's entire history of development.

You messed up bro, always play in release order. The cult story is what silent hill is about. 2 even though it’s my favorite game is the outlier in the series when it comes to story. 1 is an excellent game and you should take your time with it.

Both Dahlia and Claudia are religious c**ts with little backing for all the c**tery they do (Claudia was abused I guess) and 2 has no real villain unless you count James but still not really a villain. Now Walter, that boy was never allowed humanity by anyone or anything. There might just have never been another path for him. His story is miserable and makes you feel bad for him, but hes beyond any redemption and must be put down.

      Because you have bad taste?

  65. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

The original Silent Hills were technically shit when it game to game design, made by incompetent devs who happened to all have godly artistic taste, made under a company that didn't give a shit about them enough to actually look at what they were doing before it was released. It was lightning in a bottle, and thankfully people at the time were in the mood for it. It's built up a bit of an undeserved reputation over the years where people assume every single detail was a choice where it wasn't, and say dumb shit like "no, the camera isn't a janky mess when you move it, it's a psychological representation of how disoriented the character is" blah blah.
It also still holds up extremely well on what is good about it due to being so expertly stylised. The visuals and sound never get old. It's had a huge impact on not just games but all horror and dark art since then.

So there's no good way to remake it. The artistry is still great so at best you can only match it, and the gameplay was shit but no one cares so you're only going to lose focus trying anything but the most basic QoL improvements. It's doomed.

I think the West has really forgotten about human emotions entirely. Original SH2 was a very VERY nice depiction of a deluded and depressed human being. You can't picture a trauma better than what that game did, for each character. Then I am looking at this remake, what the frick is his face supposed to convey? Same for quite a lot of modern games, they don't even resonate at all, as if the stories and characters aren't based on humans but some alien species. What is happening?

Sh 1-4 ruined every other horror game for me since they released. Gameplay wise there are superior ones out there but absolutely nothing touches the atmosphere and God tier artistry work. It’s like chasing the dragon trying to find something that can compete in my eyes.

      >there but absolutely nothing touches the atmosphere and God tier artistry work
It was good the first time. By the third time I was fricking over it. It's actually a kind of shallow franchise and that's why it died. The gimmick wore off and once that happened people realized there's nothing else there but bad gameplay.

        >By the third time I was fricking over it.
This is why Konami and Japanese people are gay. The people left over from 1&2 didn’t want a sequel to the first game but were forced to by Konami because 2 was “too different” and wasn’t received with in Japan because of it. They wanted to continue experimenting with different ideas for the third game but became pigeon holed because of suits and loregays.

I think only Amnesia gave me that vibe I had from original SH trilogy. You can see how much effort was put into the story, details and atmosphere of Amnesia. It doesn't feel very Japanese at all to me. The closest it gets to feeling Japanese is the guy killing his wife because she wouldn't put out anymore. Only in Japan would that be considered "understandable". To any sane civilized human that would be seen as reprehensible and unforgivable.

    Amazing observation, Anon. Solid 9/10.
To give you some context the game starts off in the toilet with him staring at the mirror like a zombie with a hand around his face, then when he snaps out of it you get to control him and as you walk out of the toilet this cutscene starts.

SH2 is very easy and has quite a basic control scheme but it's mechanically fine. It just has enough to not be a movie game but I can't imagine anyone being bothered by the gameplay. Arguably the corridor chase was awkward because the controls weren't made for fast movement but it's one minute of the game.

Its not just "the door is closed, different is bad!" the fricking set is inferior to the original scene.

    intro
James: Oh, well, isn't this just a delightful turn of events? I mean, I've got a letter here, folks. Hold on to your hats. The envelope is practically shouting, "Hey, look at me! I've got secrets inside!" And whose name is gracing this tantalizing piece of mystery? None other than 'Mary.' Yes, you heard me right, Mary. You know, the name that just so happens to belong to my dearly departed wife. Oh, shit, the drama thickens!

So, here I am, standing in my living room, holding this piece of paper that's practically begging me to unravel its wicked little riddle. And what's my brilliant response? "It's ridiculous! Couldn't possibly be true!" Oh, yeah, because the dead are notorious for their fabulous penmanship and impeccable timing. Seriously, what's next? A zombie's guide to calligraphy?

But no, no, I'm not done with the self-talk show just yet. "A dead person can't write a letter," I mutter as if I'm providing groundbreaking insights into the afterlife postal service. Bravo, Captain Obvious, bravo! Oh, and let's not forget the heartwarming moment when I realize that Mary kicked the bucket three whole years ago thanks to that freaking disease. Well, isn't this a plot twist worthy of a daytime soap opera?

Absolutely. Jap games from the golden era are some sort of obscure magic for western devs. They can enjoy but never understand it. It's like asking japs to make a decent FPS or point and click adventure. They lack the layers of culture that give birth to such creative projects.

This is of course a generalisation. There's probably some nerd that can get the jap feeling right and some jap westaboo that can make a decent shooter. But common wisdom advices against it.

Maybe they just like money and know that marketing a video game to the 2% of the gaming population that cares about “tone” and “atmosphere” is dumb. I've literally never played a silent hill game longer than twenty minutes and I thought the first movie was fricking amazing. In that way at least, it mogs Resident Evil. Dropping horror for what even? Probably a terrible move. Good luck morons, I hope it pays off

I was FRICKING weak. That's why I FRICKING needed you... needed someone to punish me for my FRICKING sins... but that's all FRICKING over now... I know the FRICKING truth. Now it's time to clobber these imaginary zombies that I FRICKING manifested in my own FRICKING mind.

Old horror games played like shit so this might actually be a genuine improvement.

You don't get it. Silent Hill 2 played that way to convey the main character's struggle and to show how he isn't someone who's used to fighting.

I really hate frickers like you. You're the reason horror games are just turning into generic shooters.

If *game* doesn't play like *generic third person shooter* or *generic fps* these morons can't figure out how to play it. They're a disease

Because Bloober Team would do it for pennies, and Konami is all about spending as little as possible for maximum profit

After the HD Collection not to mention Downpour, Homecoming and that Book of Black folk on Vita, I honestly thought they were just going to let it die. It would be preferable. This is like they tried to dig up the corpse to showcase it at a museum and Bloober came in like this

youre a dumb Black person that didnt watch the movie, that was based on silent hill 3 not 2. they will NEVER make a movie based on 2 because it would be the final straw for SH fans and konami CEOS would be getting lynched and tortured

I know its based on 3, Jon Snow played Vincent for some fricking reason, it was a terrible movie. The fact is they took PH, who is James' personal tormentor/demon and threw him in, they shat all over SH2 just by doing that in the same way that Homecoming did the same by having PH in that game too

they did that since the first movie, they put pyramid head in literally everything. but do they put james in everything? no. he has been completely removed from his origins as james' personal demon/dharamapala. hes been a lesser konami mascot for many years now. the complexity of the story in 2 is too much to handle to market it or commercialize on it. I would bet alot of people who know who pyramid head is have literally never played silent hill 2 or have any idea about what he is other than spooky triangle man
