getting a quest cape if youve never done it before is a relatively obtainable end goal for the game, you have to see a good chunk of the game to get one and the questing experience in osrs is still unsurpassed in the genre today. going past that, like getting into endgame pvm or learning how to pvp, takes a significant time investment that i personally don't think is worth the time investment, but that'd be up to your personal taste.

Took me about 12 hours to realize it wasn't worth the grind a few months ago when I first tried it. There are way too many other good games to play. WoW was lightning in a bottle that was worth putting 1000 hours into. That's over now. I moved on. Put 500 hours into Civ V. 100 hours here and there into other games. 100+ into Elden Ring, Starbase, New World, BDO, Dungeon Defenders, No Man's Sky, Dyson Sphere Program, Lost Ark, etc.

Currently trying Sims 4 and Captain of Industry. Both are enjoyable so far.
I think the time investment is worth the fun content towards the later game. Once you give bossing a good try and get the questcape you can quit, unless you want some more at that point.

Runescape is nothing but bots and asocial autists optimizing the fun out of the game. Nobody socializes anymore. The only people left playing are third world gold farmers and sunk cost fallacy players that can't bear the thought of giving up on the game. Jagex has been sold off three times to various investment cartels in the last decade, and despite them posting record profits off of MTX from RS3 they had the gaul to hike the price to being more expensive than a lot of other MMOs. Meanwhile, they produce only a tiny fraction of the content they used to. Runescape used to have enough new things EVERY month to justify paying for membership. Not just bugfixes, MTX, or minor graphical tweaks, but real meaty content. stop giving israelitegex your shekels. The only way the game will get better is if you just let it die.
flat 50 stats is the peak of runescape in my opinion. The game is over once you hit flat 80s. Especially in this bossing meta where literally all money is made from bossing.
It's the only mmo that isn't a themepark left, autists will say the game is dead/full of bots but the community is more alive than ever (despite the lack of updates). A major downside about OSRS is that it's terrible for a 'competitive' player with limited time, the game has too many smelly neets that will be able to play 18 hours a day and have better hiscores even if you try to build your account around a gimmick. Just enjoy the journey and don't compare yourself to others or you will burn out hard

You could also just play RS3 and spend $5 on a bond and sell it to get full Bandos and Saradomin Godsword/fury/supplies/etc and play classic combat mode for the exact same experience with all the old bosses but with better graphics, then try out abilities with the auto-attack bar to do fancy bosses.
At any time you can switch combat modes but using the auto-attack bar with abilities is about double dps and you can throw healing abilities on the bar to afk slayer forever.
Or you can make an Iron Man and do easy quests that put Waterfall experience rates to shame to start mid-level grinds early. A lot of skills in RS3 like Farming and Slayer have a max level cap raised to 120 to have more content and challenge if you really like grinding.

Jagex screwed over the Chronicle fanbase by cancelling the Chronicle beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in November 2015 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
Do not buy Jagex games. Do not buy RuneScape membership. Do not buy MTX. Email The Carlyle Group and tell them that until Jagex atones for lying to and betraying the Chronicle fanbase, they will not see another thin dime.
