I remember reading leaks about something like that right before Imperator got announced, but haven't heard anything in the years since, at least not on here or /gsg/. My guess is that whatever team was working on it either got completely dissolved like the Imperator "dream team" that was put together to fix the game after it launched, or the team (and potentially the codebase) got reassigned to CK3 which is why the game looks and feels like some fantasy game like Dota 2 pretending to be a historical game.

Stellaris 2 is unlikely considering they said just a few months ago that they're planning to keep developing Stellaris for severel more years. They've already said they're not interested in trying again to push back the CK start date before 867 - it was too much of a stretch to try to fit earlier times int the feudal- and character-centric CK mold. I imagine that if Imperator had been much more successful ,they would have expanded its timeline through the period of the empire and late antiquity/early middle ages. But, that for sure didn't pan out.

Really depends on what you want from a CK game. Some people love it, some people absolutely hate it.
I personally think that, even with the DLC, the game is a bit shallow and samey everywhere you play.
only major change is that cultures can diverge or hybridize now, and some QoL features, like the AI doesn't falsibly claim your son is a bastard every two weeks and the ability to automatically land a courtier of a certain faith/culture
innovations and warfare is the same, the only religious change is the addition of some iberian/canary pagans, and that you can form a religious branch with the same head of faith (which doesn't make you a heretic, but does cost you a slot)
vikings just received a CB and better units, Iberians have a mechanic specific to their region, and Royal Court only affects Kings/Emperoers in an isolated window to spend gold/mana

You shouldn't get more experienced at warfare if you never wage war. Dynasty and lifestyle shit is not connected to anything you do in the game. Directly clicking on lifestyle trees or dynasty perks is even more passive and unimmersive gameplay than it automatically happening in CK2, somehow.

True, but what I am saying is that if EU V or Stellaris 2 were announced right now, sales of the upcoming DLCs for EU IV and Stellaris would plummet. Also, part of the problem with Imperator was that EU IV and CK2 handled its gimmicks better. Any new game would have to offer something really unique and distinguishing to be able to compete with the titles that are already out. I don't like CK3 in its current state, but even if the DLCs are going to turn a mediocre game into a bad one and Paradox manages to estrange their historical-simulationist-strategic audience even further, the DLCs will continue to sell thanks to its mainstream appeal and the new Sims audience they've found.

There's just so much you can do with the current systems. The last 3 DLCs or so were mod-tier shit, with minigames in the decisions tab and arbitrary unique mechanics for individual tags. You don't fire up a Fanatic Purifiers run and deal with 2018 mechanics while this super-special new empire has 10 sliders you've never even seen before. I wouldn't even say that. One of the core elements and appeals of RPGs is building your character, and there sure as hell is a lot more to building your character in 2 than there is in 3. When your king finally kicks the bucket at the ripe age of 49 you really feel like you've lived a life and done things (that are not spilling a bucket of paint). You've set up trade routes, fricked around in societies, got three heart attacks from turning the rulership focus on, lost 2000 gold and got imprisoned after your harebrained scheme of trying to get rid of content backfired and finally improved your martial education to lv4 right after losing an arm and a leg. And you have this whole lineup of traits that you can barely read to show for it. In 3 you just waited for a bar (or ten) to fill up. I don't recall that being a thing in most RPGs I've played.
