She's the rare example of an indie game character that actually looks way better in-game than in concept. You can see way more of the 60s print art-deco look shine through in the game and in the trailers where the game model takes center focus.
Spark looks so weird, like a character from a knockoff mobile game

Why did they go out of their way to create the most unappealing character possible? It's not even a matter of her being brown you can make brown characters look more appealing than this.
Sonic is kind of a perfectly designed character so any attempt to ape off his design just comes across as a cheap knockoff cause you can't really improve on it.
Sonic is kind of a perfectly designed character so any attempt to ape off his design just comes across as a cheap knockoff cause you can't really improve on it.
I like Knuckles, Shadow, and Blaze a little more than Sonic.
Sonic was put together by a committee of experts in a time where giants like Capcom and the entire animation industry were known for their character designs (i.e., it was really fricking competitive). I think what really helps is that every depiction of Sonic is meant to exude "cool" in its era. Looking at these 4
I think that characters like Mario, Crash, Rayman, Spyro, ... is proof that you can make a better design. The problem is more that the designs either doesn't match the story or if it does, then story usually sucks.
See, I like Rascal better now after I looked at his pose concepts, they humanize him with some dignity and sincerity: he looks like he knows when to be serious and when he can goof off. All I got from his official render was his 2cool4u attitude and Dreamworks-tier smile. In fact, that's what I think is missing from character attitudes today: a sincerity and willingness to make me believe that the character and the world they live in are not one note and not made for a singular purpose or agenda, however ironic. After all, if the character looks like he's going to throw out Marvel quips and anime references constantly like he doesn't care, why should I? Also, this is part of why I think the green e621 scalie homosexual also has shit characterization, there's a slimy smarminess to his smirk that repulses me, like the "people" designing him are saying "yeah, we know we're going to see furaffinity cream themselves over him, what are you gonna do about it?".
Spark looks pretty cool. Penny is kind of a cool throwback design but something about her design in that particular image is rubbing me the wrong way. Think maybe the collar or cuffs don't do it for me. Top-left needs a hew hairdo, that bald ponytail is the fugliest shit. Bottom-left is completely unsalvageable.
nothing is bad about Lina.
it's just weird see sonic replaced with an Black girl who looks like a western porn artists OC.

>She's running around like sonic instead of sucking dicks. jarring.
Frick, you just reminded of this sonic porn comic where sonic was turned into a curvy busty babe and then tanned to the point where she almost looked black, shaved a bit to show off more of her tan, and taught to speak in ebonic as part of a redesign by a porn parody company of sega called shaga, I think it was called soniq the hedgebawd or something lime that, it was made by this artist called sonicphase
I don't mind the character design, the issue is that she feels out of place for the role. Nothing about it makes me think of a speedster. If I never heard of this game and you told me she was a modded character, I'd believe you.
What is with you autists that need characters assigned into roles? At what point did a plumber equate to jumping or a fox being a galactic space cop? A good design doesn't need gameplay corolations, it just needs to be good and fun, nothing more.
I genuinely don't get Sonicgays autism at this point, no wonder you don't like games just Sonic himself.

It looks like Sonic CD. I always disliked Sonic CD's style. Sonic 2 and 3 always looked better. Trying to put labels on the distinction is difficult. There's just something about the color palette and way of patterning things that Sonic CD does that other Sonic games don't do. So imagine if you will: Take what was distinct about Sonic CD, isolate that, distill it. That's what Penny's game looks like. Which is why I also dislike Penny.
But you see, this art style was not a mistake. Christian Whitehead is a huge Sonic CD fan. He loves everything about Sonic CD, even the aesthetic. It was not accident that they developed a style that captures that essence.
Sonic CD had more zones than that one, smartass.
And Penny does make heavy use of patterns. Just not that specific triangle pattern from what we've seen so far.
This color scheme looks way better than any of Penny's and there's way more value contrast, and there's way more variety between zones here than Penny seems to have between levels in what kind of visuals you'll see. Not even factoring in that there's a past, bad future, and good future for each zone.
Penny's style is reminiscent of CD's style, sure, but is it well-done enough to "look like Sonic CD?" I don't think so.
>This color scheme looks way better than any of Penny's
No.
>and there's way more value contrast
True. Sonic CD isn't afraid of casting shadows all the way into black. but it still does a lot of purple-shading.
>and there's way more variety between zones here than Penny seems to have between levels in what kind of visuals you'll see.
Perhaps. I will have to observe how the actual zones in Penny look like. Not just the cinematic. The cinematic likely just stuck with the main visual theme. Not showing off much of the the other zones.
>but is it well-done enough to "look like Sonic CD?"
This is why I was trying to get you to imagine the essence of what makes Sonic CD distinct from other Sonics. It's like trying to explain the perfume of something. It doesn't exactly represent the thing it comes from, but it's also the essence of the thing. Like say you get an apple scented candle. You get the essence of apple, but not the whole of the apple.

>iirc her bio said that she likes cute girls.
Skip.
They got a liberal arts woman on their team who wanted to push bauhaus really hard for some reason and they were probably afraid to say no to her. I hope they let her go after this game and get some real artists, if she her touch doesn't end up killing the studio outright, that is.
"Yeah, I mean, this was definitely inspired by, you know, the art of old platformers, um, and I think you'll find that a lot in, you know, the design of Penny, uh, and, you know, her very mascot-esque silhouette. Uh, but I've REALLY [unintelligible] motivation, and, uh, inspiration [unintelligible] the bauhaus movement. It's an art movement/school of design that has a lot of geometric shapes, primary colors, and that fit very well into this because a lot of the shapes you find in bauhaus, like, you know, quarter pipe, half pipe uh, arches, they work really well with, you know, Penny's moveset. So you can, like, ride the yo-yo down, like, a quarter pipe and turn it into a cool trick, and it just... You know, we felt the movement gave the game, uh, just its look, and it gave it a lot of personality."
-Claire Warren, the 3D Artist on Penny's Big Breakaway
Bauhaus's primary influence in Penny's Big Breakaway comes through in the architecture, and you can clearly hear her say as much in the quote. Stop posting this moronic schizo image from a reductionist homosexual who doesn't understand how artistic influence actually works.
>lie and downplay it?
I'm not. The characters aren't nearly abstracted enough to be "Bauhaus" influenced, save for their clothes having bit blocks of geometric color to match the rest of the world. The primarily influence from Bauhaus's visual work is the large, abstract, geometric shapes— you can see this most clearly in the designs on the environment and the weird oblique-perspective stuff going on with some of the UI.
it looks so fricking slow jesus christ. I hope the guys playing it are just morons
They've got some clips on twitter with faster gameplay, yeah.
It's also in all of their trailer designs. The characters themselves look bauhaus-influenced, but also 90s Sega influenced, it's purely bauhaus. But it is there and it does suck ass.
>It's also in all of their trailer designs
Not even close. They do delve into that limited palette 60s printing look with some glamour shots in the trailer (like the one with a bunch of mirror Pennys swinging the yoyo around) but that's not specific to Bauhaus at all. The 2D animation parts of the trailers don't even resemble Bauhaus in the slightest; I think they're actually a pretty poor representation of the game from a visual standpoint.

You're not worth responding to because you're a schizophrenic moron without any understanding of art history or influence looking for a scapegoat to blame things on, just like the moron in that huge screencap you posted. I won't be humoring any more attempts at discussion with you because you're going to insist that a german architecture studio that died in 1933 is responsible for anything you don't like without any further articulation and I have better things to do with my time on this forum.

the environments don't actually look anything like bauhaus.
they look like classic sonic abstract environments.

At a glance that seems true, but Classic Sonic blended abstract with a low-resolution and colorful brand of naturalism, and it even though it was slightly abstract, it was never influenced by bauhaus. Just compare the level of detail and the kinds of color palettes you find in Sonic CD, 1Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or Sonic Mania, to Penny's Big Breakaway. Sonic's abstract influences came from 90s sensibilities and Golden Age American animation, while Penny's comes from an old German school of design that ruins all art and architecture that take inspiration from it.

Sonic has abstract levels, but the artwork is rendered with detail. Sonic is not a UPA cartoon, the style is more similar to golden age animation, anime, and other types of illustration.
it's not sonic.
good since sonic is slow as shit before his glacier slow acceleration gets up to speed.
he controls like shit just walking or jogging around and penny does not.
You know, people talk about the character design being bad, which doesn't bother me by the way, but honestly, looking at this animation the closest thing for comparison purposes are those characters made exclusively for TV commercials, which clearly weren't very well thought out because it's a 15-second thing that will never appear anywhere else...
>I don't like the game because I disagree with the creator's ideologies >I don't like the game because it's visually unappealing
I dunno, one complaint sounds more reasonable than the other.
yeah it looks like fricking shit. its trying to capture that weird abstract artstyle early games had but its so clean and pristine it just comes off looking like a commercial for insurance
it's not even the art style.
the colour pallets are really unique and cohesive. the environments are fine too.
it's the fricking character designs. they're awful.
Hated her design at first, watched the trailer and thought that it’s actually acceptable in 2D drawn style, but in the end with actual gameplay footage, yep, it looks atrocious again. So atrocious in fact, that if I didn’t know that there are talented developers behind the game, I’d probably just put the game into my mental trash bin.

The writing reminds me of Shantae, so it'll probably just be the same group of moronic friends thing except the MC will be invaded by gay thoughts.
She likes straight dick, I'll make sure of that when I commission artists to draw multiple lewds of her various costumes.
Looks promising.
>iirc her bio said that she likes cute girls.
Skip.
those are some lickable looking pits
The frick is wrong with her eyes?
It's not stylistic, it's terrible. Looks painful
reverse sonic eyes
Very bad call
Not a fan of the art style, so this does nothing for me, but the gameplay looks pretty good.
>no centrifugal force
-1/10 should've listened to Lange
>centrifugal force
how would that work in platformers?
I honest to god don't understand how the people behind this would ever approve of such a crummy collection of character designs.
They got a liberal arts woman on their team who wanted to push bauhaus really hard for some reason and they were probably afraid to say no to her. I hope they let her go after this game and get some real artists, if she her touch doesn't end up killing the studio outright, that is.
Haha, penis big break.
Nah I'm just playing with y'all. This game looks delightful.
>Haha, penis big break.
Nah I'm just playing with y'all. This game looks delightful.
>western indiegays who made sonic rom hacks try making a game
>it looks like shit and the character designs are abysmal
GEE WHIZ WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING
fricking Black personhomosexuals all of you
If this game came out in the 6th gen Ganker would be slurping its dick.
If it came out in the 6th gen it'd stick out like a sore thumb even more and general audiences would talk shit about these designs more openly.
A Pomni mod would sell thousands of copies of this game
pomni sexo
>Pomni’s Big Breakaway
Imagine that
DIAF
Those are some really bad designs... like, I guess shapewise, they're fine. But the actual characters are so bad...
Today, I will remind them.
Why do you feel the need to lie and downplay it? The bauhaus influence is on every facet of the visual design.
>lie and downplay it?
You either have no idea what you're talking about, you're in denial, or you're a liar. The bauhaus influence has its touch on every level of the game and it's worse for it.
>The bauhaus influence has its touch on every level of the game and it's worse for it.
I wouldn't be surprised if you're Claire herself or one of her simps at Evening Star. Seethe more bauhaus apologist. The school of design sucks ass and Penny's game looks bland and ugly as frick because of it.
>if you don't agree with me you must be X
lol
I didn't say "must" moron.
the environments don't actually look anything like bauhaus.
they look like classic sonic abstract environments.
Sonic is sometimes more abstract than other times. but most of the grass and trees were also abstract.
things are more refined in mania.
Sonic has abstract levels, but the artwork is rendered with detail. Sonic is not a UPA cartoon, the style is more similar to golden age animation, anime, and other types of illustration.
>game looks better than the animated cutscenes in every way
lol
it looks so fricking slow jesus christ. I hope the guys playing it are just morons
it's not sonic.
good since sonic is slow as shit before his glacier slow acceleration gets up to speed.
he controls like shit just walking or jogging around and penny does not.
this will be the last indie stream from Jirard LOL.
also damn Clair is fine.
They should make her run speed just a bit faster
They probably want you to spam dash and roll so the default movement is easy for casual players.
You know, people talk about the character design being bad, which doesn't bother me by the way, but honestly, looking at this animation the closest thing for comparison purposes are those characters made exclusively for TV commercials, which clearly weren't very well thought out because it's a 15-second thing that will never appear anywhere else...
the more I see, the more I don't want to play it. unity sandbox platformer blah blah blah.
Ganker is just the opposite of resetera.
>This gameplay is great but it's homophobic/transphobic!
>This gameplay is great but it has Black folk/women I can't jack it to/modern art!
Sick of modern discourse.
Bauhaus deserves to be scorned.
>I don't like the game because I disagree with the creator's ideologies
>I don't like the game because it's visually unappealing
I dunno, one complaint sounds more reasonable than the other.
Except Ganker does it for ideologies too. Doesn't even have to be the dev's ideology just look at the Sea of Stars kickstarter quote threads.
Who is talking about the latter? Everyone is talking about the objectively bad art direction. Here's your (you).
>objectively bad
yeah it looks like fricking shit. its trying to capture that weird abstract artstyle early games had but its so clean and pristine it just comes off looking like a commercial for insurance
it's not even the art style.
the colour pallets are really unique and cohesive. the environments are fine too.
it's the fricking character designs. they're awful.
I dont understand what style they're trying to go for
I'm amazed nobody's mentioned how heavy of an influence Dynamite Headdy seems to be on Penny's Big Breakaway, it was like the first thing I saw
I cannot believe it.
Underrated Good Point
When's there gonna be an Alien Soldier inspired indie then
I've been working on my scrimblo design. No you can't see it but trust me it's gonna be great. 7 more years.
what the frick is this, a game for little girls?
No, little girls wouldn't find this appealing
about*
it's Super Lucky Tale with visuals of Budsy 3d (1996), with yoyos
I like Emperor Eddie here, he's giving me King Dedede vibes. They made him bigger and tougher looking than he was in the first trailer.
Is Penny supposed to be a human or a poodle? Or a sheep? What is she?
Bunny
Lange should join Evening Star.
SEXO
The character design is inexcusably bad. All they had to do was make a generic funny cartoon animal.
>i'm obsessed with furry, so that means everyone is
Boom. Here. Design is fixed.
That was the worst of it. But there's still so much more to fix before it's fixed.
as long as those diamonds are poking her in the eyes and her goofy mouth is like that it's still bad.
Feels like balan wonderworld's bad vibes on it.
imo the character just blends in too much with the backgrounds
Hated her design at first, watched the trailer and thought that it’s actually acceptable in 2D drawn style, but in the end with actual gameplay footage, yep, it looks atrocious again. So atrocious in fact, that if I didn’t know that there are talented developers behind the game, I’d probably just put the game into my mental trash bin.
What does she draw?
She makes AI "art"
she sculpts with bubblegum
she mocks society by taping fruit and vegetables to blank canvases
The white tufty hair + the eyes made me she was like a little old lady grandma character when this game was first revealed during the Direct. And I still kind of see her that way.
>le detail le good
le wrong move bawd
>Make unappealing design because appealing characters is catering to white males and that's sexist
>Games not selling at all
>Blame the incels
Every fricking time.
>he doesn't realize this character is made appeal to white male colonizers specifically
>unappealing
I don't think it's unappealing.
did they arrive at this character design by flipping sonic's eyes horizontally?
Another case of good character designs stuck in a terrible game.
penny will be the opposite
This game would've been so much better if Balan was the protagonist you played as
and uh you know not playing like shit.
It's like a Nights game where you never get to play as Nights.
Emma is cute I wish the whole game had as much charm and passion as the FMVs.
Please can Naoto Oshima just shut down Arzest and be an independent art/character designer
>make coolest looking motherfricker
>he even has dreads
>you dont play as him
>his design was all just a disguise for a literal generic atlus white guy protag too
unreal actually fricking absurd
Dreads started with white vikings and, later, mesoamericans before blacks ever tried it.
What fricking happened with Evening Star's designers? The Hard Boiled Heavies looked great.
Those are just Egg Robo recolors though
The frick are those designs?
Penny looks way way better in 2D, fat captain lady seems like a real weak point for their roster.
>more gay pantomiming non-talking homosexual characters
when will this stop.
