Can someone summarize the plot of Tsukihime for me? I remember trying to play it years ago and hit some weird point where no matter what I chose, I eventually hit a dead end in a school or something.
I'm pretty sure you can only get into that situation if you start on one girl's route and then spend too many choices favoring one or more of the other girls, which admittedly can happen easily on your first playthrough because IIRC you have to do Arc's route first. Basically a route is a hard commit except for Ciel's Good Ending so just stick to your guns and you'll be fine. I can post story spoilers if you really want, though.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. Anime players that stick around to play the game might read it but the fotm chasers might play an arcade mode or two. Blazblue in particular has a significant dub fanbase because the story was dubbed until Centralfiction.
As someone that doesn't really play fighters and read the Tsukihime translation back when it came out, I find this to be really, really sad.
It speaks to the merits of Melty Blood's accessible skill floor and generally fun gameplay that isn't really affected by whether or not you read the story or not.
But yes, even when you have a fricking story mode sitting right there, I imagine people don't read the story mode because 1/5 of Americans are illiterate and they want a dub while a majority of anime fighters don't have dubs.

From what I understand, Nasu himself said the original versions of Fate/Tsukihime had gratuitous (=useless) sex scenes because he still had the "Comiket mindset", where games had to be eroges in some capacity, or they wouldn't sell. I mean, through the whole of Fate's three routes, you can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of sex scenes that are actually part of the plot.

I never could buy this idea they presented that they put those scenes in while soaking their keyboards in their tears. They were always huge otakus. What in all likelihood happened was that they got older, became much bigger, and therefore grew distant of that scene both personally and businesswise.
At least for Nasu, he always was a story-first kind of guy. I don't mean he did it because of outside pressure, just that those sex scenes didn't serve any purpose in the game, they were tacked in.
For example, the sex scenes between Shirou and Tohsaka in the UBW route, and between Shirou and Sakura in the HF route both serve a very important plot point, even if some parts are unintentionally hilarious.
