Would kind of love to see a modern rendering of Prontera. Even now though, kind of funny to notice that Prontera is bigger than any of the fricking cities in Skyrim.
Not that hard when Prontera is just a top down map that only looks passable from certain angles and you can't even enter most houses.
Not to mention skyrim cities were considered very small even compared to earlier elder scroll cities.
true, normal mmo players wouldn't find any enjoyment in it and the only people playing it today are nostalgia junkies, the magic is gone, sure the game degraded but so did the players
What nostalgia has that current RO doesn't is a large active community with actual GVG and playerbase.
It would collapse under modern MMO standards because RO requires you to manually find your own party and talk to people.
Not to mention games back then you talked with people, hung out and had fun while levelling. Levelling was the main thing people did, not item grind. These days levelling is a formality and "you can't access the full game until max level"
this
Even as someone who religiously played RO from 2004-2007, it just fricking sucks on a fundamental level. The classes are unbalanced as frick, PvE is boring and grindy as frick, there's not much to do other than endlessly kill mobs / grind 0.01% drop chance cards, PvP is stupid because class balance doesn't exist and it's dominated by assassins / wizards, etc.
It's fine for babby's first MMO, but WoW and every other MMO after it completely mog it in terms of gameplay
>PvP is stupid because class balance doesn't exist and it's dominated by assassins / wizards
The game never was and never pretended to be balanced around 1v1s. It was balanced around WoE
>PVP >Assassins/wizards
wow you really didn't play pvp after 2006.
Wizard stopped being good at PVP with rebirth classes. Assassins could still shank a b***h but if they didn't 1-hit they'd die like the b***h they are.
Renewal PVP was balanced because everyone could one-shot as it didn't have the global damage reduction WoE has.
They sent out 1 C&D and everybody shat their pants. Hosting a server isn't even illegal, nor having "fan" websites. Originsgays are massive cucks for example.
>you will never get married with a 12 year old asian "girl" from California and sit around the Comodo beach ever again
Democratization of the internet was a mistake. Having the internet be some sort of modern wild west was what made it all so special.
My wife (female (irl)) was one of those 12 year old girls from Chile back then.
Worked out pretty good in the long run for me.
Frick TalonRO for pulling a rug pull though, I'm glad I was able to charge back the last 3 months of purchases we made to them. Only out $95 over the last three years of playing on that server.
You were still playing RO up until this year? I'll be honest, last time I played for more than a week was over a decade ago. So this Ragnarok event of the Private servers had zero effect, I might have still had an account on some of the servers like OriginsRO or whatever but I had not invested much time in them.
On lower levels you just fail the upgrade while the gear stays intact. Beyond a certain point it turns into the "fail an upgrade and you lose the gear" we know and love.
It gave a reason to farm multiple copies of the same weapon. You'd get a bunch of them then upgrade them all until one got a high+
What really fricked it up was renewal boosting it from +10 to +15 with success rates about as high as the drop rates. Except P2W shit let you bypass that with enough money.
The class identity is still the best out of any MMO I've ever played. The ost is fantastic, the art style a joy and the game in general can be very relaxing and rewarding, specially with how memorable and cohesive the world was. Was very much a group PvP game, so it ended up being very social.
On the downside, it was a huge time sink, and could be pretty unforgiving if you didn't know what you were doing (fricking up your character so you'd need to make a new one).
I know a lot of the reasons I adore it so much is due to nostalgia, but there are many things about it I wish modern developers would just straight up copy from it.
Class identity was the absolute peak. Every class had it's own unique role it played and each one was useful if played as intented.
Even the classes specific for GVG or PVE only were distinct at the role. Guilds loved levelling up crippled builds that couldn't kill anything if it helped them greatly during times of war. I do think the isometric camera helped greatly for it's GVG thought, it let you very easily judge distance and AOE size way better than the 3D over-shoulder view MMOs these days and made it way more competitive because of it.
Modern MMOs would give sages a heal skill because dumb fricks can't tell a support class is support if they can't heal other people.
Basically, you logged in and heard this song. Then you saw all these characters with weird looking armor and you wondered where could you get it. It tend turned into a grind fest with no end. Along the way you talked to people and made friends.
That's all dead now.
You should try out the Ganker server, the rates are 7x for experience 35x logarithmic for drops (rare 0.01% drops gets the full 35x common ones don't) so it's feasible to grind out any build solo but there are daily parties and we almost have enough active players to start doing battlegrounds and WoE.
It was social media for a generation of geeks and weebs who sought refuge in the wild west that was the internet, before the invention of social media and the invasion of normies. A whole new world to ourselves. People who were bad at socializing irl could do so in Ragnarok Online and other contemporary MMOs. The underlying game just gave people something mindless to do, like grinding exp or items.
I'm a very shy person irl, but it helped me realize that there are others like me and I even met my girlfriend there, just proposed to her yesterday and we are set to marry soon. This age of internet trailblazing will never come back and I feel sorry for the misfits of younger generations who have nowhere to go to escape from current society.
God, I remember spending hours grinding the old Payon underground on my assassin and monk. Weird thing I noticed, naturally, was that when I was ready to die for faster access to the surface I naturally almost never did. (I never quite got to where 1% exp was a painful tax, admittedly)
The economy is shit because everyone just bots zeny.
But the economy would be shit without bots because of the absurdly low drop rates on almost mandatory items.
Zeny cap helped keep things under control for a while but there's only so much that can do.
>people saying its just nostalgia >started playing on a 1rate pserver some months ago >still had the same fun as back then >server closed due to gravity panic
It completely obliterated class identity. Now everyone is good at everything.
3rd jobs were more of a symptom than a cause though, of the devs forgoing what made the game unique for more "popular" or "safe" paths that other MMOs took. 3rd jobs didn't kill the game, renewal did.
I tried playing last year and I just couldn't do it. From minor stuff like the Eden group completely killing the organic way the player used to explore the world (or, you know, having to interact with other players/the community to find out where to go next) and the abomination that are the group instance monster hunting quests (just put me at max level at this point) to the way you actually progress at max level (it's all instanced content that you run 1 billion times. It don't have to interact with the world in the slightest, much less with other players in any meaningful way).
There a bunch of different things that make me hate renewal with a passion, but I guess these are the major ones.
3rd classes were horrible unbalanced and for the most part 3-2 classes got significantly better options and 3-1 almost universally sucked outside RK. Combined with the changes to the formulas with renewal it utterly fricked the game up. Having to learn all the new shit on top of having new classes really made the game unfun for people. It's not the 3rd classes themselves, but the fact they introduced them with so many other changes.
For example;
RK had a spammable AOE ranged attack that ignored common resistances covering it's lack of AOE options as a RK.
RG got a bunch of damage skills but no defensive ones and with the meta being all ranged damage skills defender was busted.
Sorcerer got no utility and only damage skills that all instant cast with unique delay so it ended up a DPS class
Sura basically changed identity from being a single hit then back off to regen SP and set up to just spam a high damage skill and penuma let them just tank most of what was thrown at them
Song/dance classes actually became a DPS for a short time before getting nerfed.
Genetic got AOE acid bombs and got plenty of useful shit in their kit including a vastly superior cart boost to blacksmiths version.
Stalker became even more a troll class with it's infinite hole spam and damage redirect.
Meanwhile Warlock got gimped out the ass to do no damage and barely freeze and all it's skills got an annoying extra cast time delay. The only skills it got worth using were all supportive ones like white imprison, AOE stone curse, and an improved quagmire. Also stasis which was so hilarious busted it gave b-wings a cast time.
AB became useless as healing was signficiantly worse.
Sniper got really low numbers on it's damage skills and warg clashed with falcon skills.
Mechanic was an utter meme only good for blowing itself up.
Assassin was fairly weak and annoying to play.
Just how borked is the iro classic server? I know you can spend money to skip all the grinding but a f2p player can eventually get up to snuff and play with paying players right? Would it take literally 5000 hours of playtime or something?
100% nostalgia
would collapse under current mmo standards
Standards which are being upheld by weebs, incels, neets and unironic troons. RO is as great as ever, it's the playerbase that has gotten worse.
People would seethe over a 0.01% chance drop rate for cards
Or failed upgrades means you lose the equipment forever
true, normal mmo players wouldn't find any enjoyment in it and the only people playing it today are nostalgia junkies, the magic is gone, sure the game degraded but so did the players
What nostalgia has that current RO doesn't is a large active community with actual GVG and playerbase.

At least it was, until Gravity finally came for the private servers.
They sent out 1 C&D and everybody shat their pants. Hosting a server isn't even illegal, nor having "fan" websites. Originsgays are massive cucks for example.
Kinda funny that the company that bought the rights threw out a C&D despite the fact that private servers had been running for 15 years.
I just want a server I can bot on with high population.
For me, it's
>you will never get married with a 12 year old asian "girl" from California and sit around the Comodo beach ever again
Democratization of the internet was a mistake. Having the internet be some sort of modern wild west was what made it all so special.

Black person
Yeah much better to give your money to Blizzard or Valve right moron?
>implying I do
Go frick yourself with your homosexual fallacy
You were still playing RO up until this year? I'll be honest, last time I played for more than a week was over a decade ago. So this Ragnarok event of the Private servers had zero effect, I might have still had an account on some of the servers like OriginsRO or whatever but I had not invested much time in them.
you sure are one stupid ass monkey. there were tons of free korean servers
>cringe island
>See map
>music start playing on my head
What was Ragnarok Online like? It looked cool when I was a kid but I never played it and don't know anything about it beyond the Ragnarok anime.
Lots of grind with typical KMMO upgrade bullshit. "5% chance to upgrade your weapon, 40% chance to fail, 55% chance to break weapon" kind of bullshit.
And BiS cards with 0.01% drop chance that could take literal months to get without botting.
On lower levels you just fail the upgrade while the gear stays intact. Beyond a certain point it turns into the "fail an upgrade and you lose the gear" we know and love.
>the "fail an upgrade and you lose the gear" we know and love
this game appeals to your stockholm syndrome
It gave a reason to farm multiple copies of the same weapon. You'd get a bunch of them then upgrade them all until one got a high+

An experience you had to be a part of to understand.
It was our twitter or whatever social network kids use these days. You would meet people, grindan for days for very little progress. Well worth it.
god-tier aesthetics for characters, bgm, maps, etc.
plenty of socializing and guild drama
rampant botting, broken economy, tons of lag
The class identity is still the best out of any MMO I've ever played. The ost is fantastic, the art style a joy and the game in general can be very relaxing and rewarding, specially with how memorable and cohesive the world was. Was very much a group PvP game, so it ended up being very social.

JUST
For me, it's Payon
Muh old Payon
God, I remember spending hours grinding the old Payon underground on my assassin and monk. Weird thing I noticed, naturally, was that when I was ready to die for faster access to the surface I naturally almost never did. (I never quite got to where 1% exp was a painful tax, admittedly)
Oh, shit!
Oh, frick!
>Sits tanking it.
>use a shitload of them in a low level area
>someone whines to a gm and they wipe the map
homosexuals, the lot of them.
I swear, most of my memories in Ragnarok were fighting undead
On my sea server
Morroc was the main hub town
And I like it since it fit the trading town theme
kino
until you realice the game economy is shit
seriouly game, jut let me finish a build
The economy is shit because everyone just bots zeny.

nah modern MMOs are just shit
Whenever there is a RO thread, I just accidently spend a few hours listening to ost.
Frick I wanna go back
Why do people say 3rd jobs killed the game? I liked 3rd jobs.
game economy (inflation) is what ruins almost every MMO
It completely obliterated class identity. Now everyone is good at everything.
3rd jobs were more of a symptom than a cause though, of the devs forgoing what made the game unique for more "popular" or "safe" paths that other MMOs took. 3rd jobs didn't kill the game, renewal did.
