I recently got and started playing on a PS2 for the first time. Overall a pretty cool thing to experience. I want to see what other people have to say about this console too.

It's the greatest console of all time. Its library has yet to be surpassed.
The library sucks though. I don't care about story games or "experimental" budget shovelware.
Why does every fricking game have to be Super Mario Bros? You'll love modern gaming where devs don't experiment anymore.
Experimentation for the sake of it rarely makes for a fun game to play.
Sure, but it's important to try and then learn
Shovel my foot out of your ass, begone contrarian, Sega fricking sucks and always has. Unplayable crap, did your parents divorce and your single mom could only buy you a preowned Jaguar which you had to share with Tyrone's kids?
>The library for the PS2 sucks
Compared to what, it's library is the thing it holds over Xbox and GameCube, except for dreamcast, it's better at everything than Dreamcast
>The library sucks though.
peak contrarianism
Last japanese console before the westerners took over
It's already from the western dominating era though. Best selling games of 6th gen are all GTA nig sim stuff
Cope.
About what? I'm not complaining, just stating a fact
Cope.
GTA > your favorite game
I don't hate GTA but it's a western game
Low IQ brownposts.
>GTA nig sim
best description of SA ive seen yet kek
As someone who got it late too:
>at least 50 10/10 games worth playing which will keep you occupied for the next two years
>at least additional 50 really good games worth playing
>shitton of mediocre games that are still fun for a quick fix in the evening
>at least 30 jRPGs if you are a weeb
Make sure to get it softmodded and use openps2loader to load games off hard drive or your pc via network, makes the console quieter and loading times faster.

I'm not familiar with region locking for the PS2, is it possible to play Japanese games on a softmodded NTSC PS2?
Yes, OPL completely bypasses the region lock because it doesn't use the DVD drive at all. The DVD drive infrastructure in PS2 is its own separate subsystem with a chip called Mechacon that enforces the region lock and anti-piracy protections.
I ordered a FMCB memcard yesterday, got any tuto or tips to set everything, fren?
Any information an anon can give you can be obtained by manual research - That is to say, look it up yourself. This is an important skill.
>tutorial
no, look it up
>tips
Make sure you have your folder structure correctly done.
Most of the work is making sure you got the IP addresses configured properly in the OPL.
You can also boot up popstarter via network but last I checked you had to manually edit the notepad list and its a bit fidgety. Make sure to google hugopocket popstarter fixes, fixes a lot of ps1 games that way.
DO NOT use popstarter off a usb drive, it tends to corrupt savefiles very often.
PS2 games off usb driver work, sometimes FMVs lag because the PS2 usb port is 1.1 only but its nothing terrible. More importantly it requires you to keep your usb drive defragged before you copy any isos on it and you dont know if shit works until you attempt to boot the game.
Don't bother with nes/snes emulation, its shit.
Lots of good games but you gotta know which ones to get for your own gaming preferences. I'd personally stay away from their 'mascot' exclusives like Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper (aside from Sly 2, which was pretty good). I got the PS2 fairly late when it was the 'slim' version for Christmas '05 but by then, its library was big & most of its games were like $19.99 at Best Buy. I highly recommend Timesplitters Future Perfect, Sniper Elite, Tekken 5, God of War 1 & 2, Burnout 3 Takedown, Prince of Persia Warrior Within, Downhill Domination, WWE SmackDown Here Come the Pain, NBA Street Vol. 2, Fight Night Round 3, Urban Chaos Riot Response, Cold Winter, Project Snowblind, Manhunt 1 & 2, GTA Vice City & San Andreas, Scarface The World Is Yours, King of Fighters Orchids Collection, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, Mega Man Anniversary Collection, Sega Genesis Collection, Mega Man X Collection, Beatdown Fists of Vengeance, Godhand, Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Gun, Black, SoulCalibur 2, SoulCalibur 3 (make sure to fix the memory card issue for this so your file don't get corrupted)...anyway there's tons more to name but these were some of the best I played on the console over the years.
it's my favorite system OP. there's so much variety, I've been playing PS2 since 2001 and have only scratched the surface
>Massive set of shovelware
Except for the Sega collection games, those are cool.
>keeping the used price stickers
I played the hell out of it in my childhood until the laser broke. I recently got another unit to re-experience it all. Some games have graphics effects that you'll never see if you run them through PCSX2. In Rayman 3, the lighting in Summit Beyond the Clouds and disco board levels and the refraction effect when you throw your fists with the red power up all look completely different on real hardware.
ah frick im getting old i forgot PS2 is now retro gaming
Too bad the controller is utter dogshit
It's like a shit xbox.
I really like the PS2, especially on a CRT. It has a lot of soul, maybe less than the PS1, but at least you can see what's on the screen. There's not that many games available only on PS2, but since the console is so cheap and easy to softmod, there's no reason to skip it
>Time Crisis
>God Hand
>Silent Hill
>Shadow of Rome
>Forbidden Siren
>Fatal Frame
>Shadow Hearts
And so on. It's probably just nostalgia googles, but even a lot of shovelware games like Harry Potter tie ins are a lot of fun
Onimusha
Onimusha 3
Silent Hill 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Dragon Quest V
Metal Saga
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
For me it's
Oh for me? For me myself personally imho opinion its
GodHand
Viewtiful Joe
The Red Star
Warriors Orochi 2
Prince of Persia
