Rate the bosses:
>Divine Lion - 9/10
Great presentation and moveset, but gimped a bit due to camera issues.
>Relanna - 8/10
A bit too anime-y and spammy, but still a great boss once you get the hang of it.
>Hippo - 5/10
Big monster with weird hitboxes. Not awful but not good either:
>Scadutree Avatar - 7/10
Interesting design and solid moveset but nothing particularly impressive. A solid boss overall.
>Romina - 7/10
Same as Avatar.
>Gaius - 8/10
Weird hitbox on the charge aside, this fight is genuinely great.
>Putrescent Knight - 8/10
A bit spammy on the combos, but he makes up for it with an interesting moveset and design.
>Metyr - 8/10
A 10/10 in terms of design, unfortunately gimped by a couple of frustrating attacks.
>Midra - 10/10
One of the best fights in any Fromsoft soulslike. Amazing presentation and buildup, interesting and engaging moveset.
>Messmer - 10/10
Another absolute banger.
>Radahn: 6/10
Phase 1 is a solid 8/10, but phase 2 has so much bullshit and so many attacks that require almost frame-perfect reactions to dodge that it just becomes frustrating.

Dark Souls 1 is the best because of it's level design and atmosphere. Combat was secondary. It felt good to explore unlike this open world trash.

DS1 was the worst game in the series, man. Nothing memorable about it. Felt like a slog through shit valley and its bosses were sucked. Demon's Souls had fun bosses with real mechanics besides rollslop. Dark Souls 2 also had fun gimmicky bosses. Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne had perfected the combat and movement of these games. Elden Ring had the most beautiful world.

no wonder the game is so bad. A lot of the design decisions are just baffling, uninteresting and unengaging.

I wonder if the Pajeets were so bad that they made all kinds of new enemies but none of them could actually be used even with Elden rings low standards so they had to copy paste the same handful over and over again.

I don't know but even with more interesting enemies you couldn't save the abhorrent level design. Everything is about finding shortcuts to access different levels of the map but the areas themselves are bland, lot of emptiness and I feel the game was frontloaded and had the best vistas and environments at the beginning.

Yeah I just said relative. I had the dragonslayer great katana and the ash only did about 1100 with golden vow and fgms active. He’s like the 3rd “remembrance” you encounter too so it’s not like he’d be scaled above Messmer or anything yet he feels like it

I thought he's. supposed to be the optional endgame boss like kalamert was for DaS so I did everything else except radahn before facing him again. The first time I saw him I had no chance of beating him so I just got to blessing level 17 or so and then it felt appropriate.

But I also went into the DLC under leveled. Most O spoke to finished it at like 220-30 while I was barely level 190 which severely limited my options considering buffs and armor.

when going IN to ghe DLC.
I went in at level 120 but everyone recommends going in at level 150+
Most just picked their one and only save file where they killed literal every base game with.

                Anonymous

I went into the DLC with the only character I had that finished the base game fully, at around level 240. And it was still fine, because levels barely matter past a certain point.

                Anonymous

It doesn't matter for dmg/hp but it does give you a shit load endurance for more options, a lot of FP for AoWs/spells and enough points to max out a second soft or hard stat.

When I went in at level 120 I had like 50 dex, 50 vig and the rest spread to hit a few requirements .
that means I went in with low fp, low endurance and 0 options for buffs and magic.

                Anonymous

I did the whole thing at 150 but I think it would have been a lot more fun around 250 just to try out more weapons/spells and not having to worry about constantly re-speccing.

Placidusax is like 6-7/10 but since all big bosses in the franchise are 0/10, this means Placidusax is 12/10 in comparison.

Overall i liked all of them aside from phase 2 Radahn, i'd like Relanna a bit more if you didn't have to dodge at the last possible frame in order to not get attacked by the second swing, Avatar melted a bit too quickly against fireballs for me to get a grasp on her, similarly snek Messmer melts to holy to a point where i didn't really learn his second phase before i got an opportunity to end the fight quickly
Midra was the MVP for me

    >divine lion 7/10
Cool boss with an awesome spectacle, but it loses some points for it's moveset being difficult to follow and read

    Relanna 3/10
Spammy chimp difficulty. Half the time I couldn't get a hit in and I won due to luck, not skill.

    Golden Hippo 7/10
Great meme boss that made me giggle. Ultimately forgettable.

    Scadutree Avatar 2/10

Spammy and way to long. It was an interesting idea but horrible execution.

    Gaius - 6/10
Mostly fun, mostly fair. I had to really focus hard to dodge a lot of his moves and the only move I really had a problem with was his fast charge. I swear that if you get within a certain range of it it locks you out of a dodge. So many times I felt like I hit dodge and it just didn't respond.

    Putersecent Knight 8/10
Cool boss, cool look, cool concept. I think the AOE was pushing it a little, but ultimately I thought it was a really creative fight.

    Metyr 10/10
Genuinely surprising and I loved how it go super fricking weird with it. Especially how it followed with the priest.

    Bayle 10/10
Best of the DLC. Amazing spectacle, fair moveset and the first time I was genuinely in awe

    Messmer 6/10
Cool fight but it was a bit much in it's second half

    Needle Knight Leda 4/10
Cool idea but, again, poor execution. Too much posie and the stamina is infuriating. The hand to hand guy is faster than you and won't stop chasing you. He drove me fricking insane.

    Radahn 2/10
first phase is fine, second phase is inexcusably bad. It's so bad I didn't even bother to complete it. I'm not wasting my time, especially with the ending cutscene which has zero payoff

She's a lot like melania except she trades out annoying on-hit effects like the healing and rot for having longer combos and doesn't stagger. Which I find to generally be a more enjoyable experience.
    Hippo: 4/10
Entirely forgettable, frankly I don't even remember the fights.
    Scadurtree avatar: 1/10
fighting three of them back to back was a funny joke for about 3 seconds the first time you see it, then it is just fricking annoying.
    Romina: 4/10
Annoying hitbox tornado moves and camera issues make it an annoying fight
    Bayle: 8/10
A solid fromsoft dragon fight. Going up against it with a freshly upgraded dragon slayer katana felt great.
    Gaius: 9/10
Kino cavalry battle. I want to play through with a lance to give him the battle he deserves.
    Putrescent knight: 8/10
Visually a really cool design. Feels very "horseman of the apocalypse." A great end to the fascinating area it is in thematically, but held back by the fight itself being rather lackluster.
Metyr: A lot of what I said for the putrescent knight. Interesting visually and thematically, an okay fight.
    Midra: 5/10
Loses a lot of points frankly for just being annoying to actually get into the fight. Having to kill the tiny version and skip a cutscene every time is fricking annoying.
    Messmer: 10/10
Sincerely my favorite fight in the DLC, and up there as one of the best in ER as a whole. Moveset is hard but not bullshit, cool visual design, the fricking works.
    Leda: 2/10
The literal only thing that saves this gank squad fight from being a 1/10 is that you get to bring your own gank squad.
    Radahn: Provisional 5/10
Just got to it, haven't beaten it yet. I feel like the damage values I am seeing to him and to myself are telling me to go collect more scadurtree blessings which is frankly just annoying.

Mechanically Radahn might be my favorite fight in the game. I was using deflect, but I think he works really well with it and I felt like my strategy really developed as the fight progressed, finding out where I can squeeze in a guard counter, where I should roll instead of deflect, where I can find time to get a buff in midfight, and for a company where my main complaint with their combat, both in Souls and Sekiro, is that so many fights just feels like learning the timing for when I press the defense button, whether that's deflect or dodge, Radahn was a rare instance of me having various defensive options available with each having their own benefits and drawbacks and I really enjoyed figuring out what worked where in both phases.

Deflect hardtear essentially makes it a different (much more fun) game and I regret not using it for every DLC boss. Radahn is my faovrite in the game now.
Just sucks that you can instantly tell when someone didn't use it because their impressions are completely different. Sekiro parry actually lets you keep up with ridiculous movesets.

        >Deflect hardtear essentially makes it a different (much more fun) game
It is what everyone was telling FROM what the base game should be.
If Elden Ring had the Deflect Tear/Sekiro style deflect, it would be a 11/10 experience

As it stands ita a fun band-aid to an endemic problem

    >Divine Lion
    9/10
Just a very good boss all around, design and moveset is on point, the theme with the chinese lion dance and the japanese four season dance is really well done
    >Rellana
    7/10
She's okay, but her moveset is nothing particularly interesting and anything with a full field AoE where you have to memorize the timing stinks of MMO bullshi
    >Skibiditree
    6/10
I like the gimmick where it's reborn three times and gets more moves, but overall it's a pretty boring fight with some cheap bullshit like the surprise RNG AoE explosion on repeat when it's almost dead in phase 3, also lots of wonky hitboxes like the homing roots make this worse than it should be
    >Romina
    7/10
It's nothing special honestly, it does its job, it has no bullshit like Skibiditree or Putrescent Knight but it's also fairly unmemorable, a similar problem to Rellana where neither have a real presence in the setting
    >Gaius
    7/10
I'd give it an 8/10 if the charge hitboxes weren't bullshit and he wasn't completely invincible during the charge for no good reason, if the Fallingstar beast doesn't get a free ticket for its charges neither should Gaius, it's a good fight outside of that detail though.
    >Putrescent Knight
    5/10
Honestly the cheapest boss outside of Radahn, runs away all the fricking time and has absurdly dishonest range on top of that cancerous fullscreen ghostflame AoE, being a glass cannon that gets melted by Holy is the only saving grace of this piece of shit because at least you can erase him fast enough to avoid his cancerous AoE spam.
Offscreen rape horse tackles are probably one of the most offensive things FROM has done.
    >Metyr
    6/10
Discount Bloodborne boss, cool idea but completely unmemorable and fairly helpless too.
    >Midra
    9.5/10
Really good fight, just very well done and the buildup is exceptional
    >Messmer
    10/10
Best boss fight in ER together with Mohg, simple as
    >Radahn
    4/10
Terrible fight, utterly dishonest bullshit on the level of LRP Zinaida, second phase is beyond bad.

Igon and the run through Jagged Peak carries the fight, other than that is ye olde super dragon fight

Other than the main bosses though:
      >Demihuman Swordmaster Onze
      8/10
Demihuman Virgil will never not be funny and it's a genuinely good fight as well
      >Golden Hippo
      6/10
Fight against the camera rather than the boss, thankfully you can shred him with tons of spells so it's not overly annoying
      >Skeleton Dragon
      6/10
I like how the one in the Cerulean Coast can summon skellies like Tibia, but other than that it's mostly just a dragon with a better moveset and more AoE
      >Death Knights
      9/10
Both are so good it's a damn shame there's only two of them and are both stuck in a mausoleum, amazing minibosses
      >Jori Elder Inquisitor
      8/10
Really good wizard fight, overall really well done and a nice surprise on the way to Midra
      >Lamenter
      8/10
Very nice gimmick fight, didn't expect it at all and it's good to see FROM can still come up with nice gimmicks
      >Leda's JRPG party
      8/10
Pretty nice story fight especially if you summon Ansbach and Thiollier to bro op, having a 3 vs 3 battle royale with actually meaty and well designed invaders was a really good idea, basically DS2' gank squad but done correctly for a change

I can't believe how many people are saying they loved Bayle but hated Radahn. I fricking hated Bayle, it was every bad thing about From's dragon boss fights in one package. The presentation was good, but fighting him was miserable. Radahn was harder but I had way more fun fighting him, I got sick of Bayle before I even tried him 10 times.

      >it was every bad thing about From's dragon boss fights in one package
That would be Midir, at least Bayle isn't an annoying homosexual that runs away constantly, has an ungodly large HP pool and only one weak point, Bayle also tries to kill you instead of being discount Godzilla with a terrible aim

        Anonymous

I don't like Midir either, but I have to at least give him that it's pretty easy to control the camera and reliably stay in range hit his head, and that alone puts him over dragon fights like Bayle where doing that feels so unreliable that you're going to be manually controlling the camera and hitting his legs and tail half the time which I can't stand.

        Anonymous

Midir is the literally the best dragon fight in fromsoft's catalogue, what are you talking about.
It was a stroke of genius to have its head being the weak point since it forced you to face him head on, which also allowed you to see all his moves. All other dragon fights revolve around hit the feet/tail and guessing which attack is coming next. Bayle and Placidusax faced the same problem, albeit slightly less so compared to the generic dragons or the other Saxes.

          >Midir is the literally the best dragon fight in fromsoft's catalogue, what are you talking about.
You gotta be kidding me, that dumb homosexual is completely helpless and forces you to either chase him and whack his head or shoot the shit out of him at range because anything else takes way too much time for something that can barely even hit you in the first place.
At least something like Placy has the decency of not forcing you to wait for its head to be in range and actually engages with you rather than constantly running away and shooting magic missilies and godzilla beams.
Bayle can actually aim shit at you and is completely fair in how you can engage him as you have not only two weak points of your choosing for melee but he's so fricking fat you can also just shred him comfortably with Shard Spiral or Pest Thread Spear if you're a caster, killing Midir on the other hand is excruciatingly boring because he does his best to be an annoying piece of shit who refuses to engage with you and keeps shooting at your for that one lucky shot that might hit you.

The entire DLC was a mid experience. Highs being Relanna and Messmer and, while a shitty fight, toppling the challenge of Radahn felt incredible. The open world was bland and weirdly almost entirely empty. Side dungeons while largely improved over the base games were still redundant tile sets and relatively same-y so nothing great plus they resolved in what was usually a boring red spirit tier fight.
Too many of the remebrances lacked a dungeon of value. like literally just true main game required remembrances had ones. sad. finally, the abrupt end. You topple a god and a lord and that's it. ya dun. no music, nothing cool, no credits. NADDA

    >Lion
6/10, the camera genuinely makes this fight unfun, and then its attacks are have obnoxious timings with hard to read animations AND AOEs out the ass.
    >Rellana
4/10, probably the weakest fight in the DLC. Everything bad about Elden Ring combat. Delayed attacks, combos based on positioning (I hope you're not trying to create space between you and her!), repositioning around to frick with your camera etc
    >Skibidi Avatar
7/10, great presentation, good and fair attacks. Enjoyable.
    >Gaius
7/10 normally, 10/10 with the parry hardtear. Amazing fight if you're perfect guarding. Being able perfect guard his charge is so satisfying. All his attacks have intuitive timings, he has good spectacle and even his BS isn't that bad and can be worked around.
    >Putrescent Knight
5/10, too much stupid shit. Not fun to learn, not fun to fight even when you learn its attacks. Second worst fight in the DLC.
    >Bayle
9/10, finally a good follow up to Midir. Literally the all the other dragon fights in the base game suck. Except Placidusax, but he's just OK. He feels like Midir on crack and you basically fight him the same way too. Only annoying shit is the AOE spam and his laser has some questionable hitboxes.
    >Messmer
8/10, first phase is based, 2nd is ehhh the snakes aren't hard to dodge but it feels jank. Maybe they should have made his arena a bit bigger.
    >Midra
10/10 I love it, the quintessential (madness) old man from fight and it's just so much fun.

I liked them all except for Radahn. Midra was the most fun and the cutscene was the most cinematic. Bayle (with tip) is one of the most kino fights in the entirety of souls shit. Romina was a nightmare to fight but in a fun way. Messmer was very average. Funny laughing crying cloning inflatable flailing arms tube man was a really unique fight. The 4 cardinal direction gaols were pretty good npc fights. I fricked up the ganksquad and only had to fight Leda and Dryleaf so I can't really give an opinion on it.

I didn't find the way to his room until way late into my run (already found the sealing tree) so I was probably over scadu'd for him I think.
I kind of expected more from his phase 2. Him turning into a giant snake head for quick attacks is not what I expected. That part of his fight felt weak, like he was just an npc invader with a dragon chomp but its snek spell.
He did impale me once which was really flashy but I didn't even die to it.

No. Radahn doesn't have any move like Waterfowl that can singlehandedly make or break the attempt and he leaves pretty punishable openings on moves like when he's pulling the sword from the ground or his cross slash. He's still very hard, but it didn't take me as long to beat him as Malenia at all.

I'm not saying Waterfowl has no counter, but it's still a more threatening move than any one move Radahn has and while she has the weakness of low posture and crumbling more to a heavy offense, I still think the amount of punish windows Radahn leaves and not having any one move as strong as Waterfowl made for an easier boss overall. Still probably second hardest in the game, but I beat him quicker than Malenia.

I never get why people make such a big thing of Isshin's difficulty. The hardest boss in Sekiro for me was easily Juzou the Drunkard and that was just because I wasn't used to playing the game yet, after I figured it out by fighting him nothing else in the game was especially challenging. Even then I'd say old man Isshin is harder than Sword Saint because you have to deal with the fire, which is a rare instance for the game of not being able to just deflect or simon says through your problems.

NTA but i can kind of agree. if you come in solo with no shield and just learn how to avoid all his attacks the whole fight flows incredibly satisfyingly. even the 2nd phase which seems bullshit at first just requires you to be calm and precise with your rolls. it's so good

        >but it's still a more threatening move than any one move Radahn has
... if you have brain damage.

waterfowl is objectively harder than any one move radahn has. the level of precision you have to execute to avoid it is higher even than the flurry that ends in the giant aoe in phase 2. that being he said waterfowl is literally the only hard thing about malenia

How is that different from Malenia at launch? The exact same thing happened. Lets compare the difficulty 2 years from now, when people have had more experience with the fight.

If you want to put it that way sure. But in the end, both are/were bosses that take a long time to learn and kill, so they are hard. I dont know what problem souls-fans have with calling things hard.

Not as dangerous as waterfowl but his X cross attack seems to be literally undodgeable. I haven't seen anyone manage to dodge it consistently and even ongbal had to use the parry tear instead of dodging on his no hit fight.

                Anonymous

Maybe you're talking about a different attack, but the only cross slash I can think of I dodged everytime. I was using deflect, but I would specifically not deflect that and dodge it instead because you get a punish off the dodge and not the deflect.

                Anonymous

I'm talking about the one where he does a consecutive slash with each sword and then a third one which creates a shockwave that you dodge by rolling towards him. If you dodge the first slash you get roll punished by the second one. I fought Radahn like 30 times and the only times I "dodged" the attack was because of some elevation in the area that prevented the attack from hitting me.

                Anonymous

That is the one I was thinking of, but it's only the third part of it I dodged, you can deflect the first two slashes and dodge through the last and get a punish after. I can imagine the difficulty of dodging the first two though as they're fast.

                Anonymous

Are you talking about the move he does in phase 1 or phase 2? In phase 1, you avoid it by dodging sideways along opposite directions. Left-right-left. It gives you just enough extra distance to do the 2nd dodge before his sword connects.

                Anonymous

Tried that several times and didn't work. Granted I was mid rolling, but still bullshit that an attack REQUIRES light roll to be dodged.

              Anonymous

It's not one attack, it's the fact that Radahn is way more punishing if you make a mistake. If you get hit by a light beam, you are almost guaranteed to get hit by his next attack since it stops you in place, and from there likely will get hit by another attack in his combo. There's basically no room for mistakes the whole fight, whereas Malenia is way more forgiving on her attacks (with the exception of waterfowl, which is her main threat).

                Anonymous

i agree, it's why i think he's a much better fight. malenias difficulty is so centered around that one move it just makes the whole thing awkward as you're always waiting for her to do it. with radahn you're ALWAYS in danger with each combo he does

Funny enough, you do pretty much the same thing. Dodge the first rocks as normal, run backwards during the multi attack until he slams the ground, then dodge the second wave the same way as the first one. It's ironic that the attack looks super threatening but is actually his easiest one to dodge. I kept getting chipped constantly by the lights after attacks but managed to deal with the rock wave consistently after I stopped panicking.

i only struggled with divine beast because i didnt have skidibi fragments

dlc really should of just been balanced around a level 150 character when character power plateaus and removed the fragments

I'm fighting Bayle right now, and the lock on is pure cancer. When he does any melee attack you will instantly be inside his body and then the camera spasms begin. Playing without locking is also fricking tiring since he jumps all over the place.

    >Lion
6/10, camera was ass, reused later
    >Rellana
8/10, would be better if her combos had more room for you to weave in hits. Was still fun
    >hippo
4/10, forgettable and reused as an overworld enemy several times, size was scaled too large to feel good
    >Scadutree avatar
5/10 Cool design, Aoe spam was annoying, final phases explosion is some mario maker shit
    >Midra
9/10, for some reason the madness boss was the most fair feeling
    >Bayle
9/10, actually a good dragon fight so long as you do Igors questline
    >Romina
7/10, janky feeling to hit and felt out of place.
    >Putrescent Knight
4/10, tons of reused assets and was too mobile
    >Gaius
2/10, wasn't fun in the slightest because of his janky ass charge attack
    >Finger mother
6/10, not very fun but wasn't too bullshit
    >Messmer
8/10, cool fight overall, the last phase has one really hard move so rng can frick you
    >Radahn
3/10, first time one of these games made me put on damage negation buffs to have a fighting chance, there's just too much shit going on in phase 2. Its still cool but the gameplay in the fight is absurd and highlights whats wrong with this game

The boss is straight up bugged. So bugged you can trick him into running into a world by going around a corner and then just spam AoEs through the wall to kill him easily. If you want to beat him legit you’re going to have a pretty painful experience. Torrent is really dogshit even with the Revered Ash buffs and fighting Gayss on your feet is very shitty.

That’s been my overall feeling. I love exploring the world and fighting enemies is engaging. Then you get to the major boss fights and the quality nosedives. And as a FTH player seeing so many new incantations just be straight up dogshit is very annoying. Especially when From clearly learned their lesson when they buffed the base game incants over the years. It’s like they regressed.

Oh and mind you the exploration aspect isn’t as engaging as the base game was on release. Because the rewards are awful. Random smithing stones and broken runes all over the fricking place. I love the world design and layouts but then they just filled it with junk items and expected the player to be satisfied with that. And of course billions of cookbooks.

I don’t really regret getting the DLC but it leaves a slur taste in my mouth KNOWING it could have been so much better.

I feel like the archaic lock-on system is what makes people have issues beating these bosses at low scat levels. If you unlock from them, the fights become much easier and fun.
However the default button layout for controller is a bit awkward when unlocked so one should change the button binds around to optimize their experience.

2/10 ass. Salvageable if the arena was larger & the camera was zoomed out maybe 20 or 30 percent
      >Rellana
3/10 pure adderall slop. Non existent attack windows for the player, & seems to have no logic whatsoever on what attack she does or whether or not she finishes her combos one way or another
      >gold hippo
3/10 forgettable. The charge attack has an unreasonably small dodge window & the arena is far too small
      >Tree avatar
5/10 annoying. Very cool arena but lasts way too long
      >Romina
8/10 Sexy. Looks amazing and was a fun fight. The only boss with both readable moves and fair damage windows. Why no cutscene or mention leading up to her?
      >Gaius
1/10 have a nice day. Pure bullshit, there isn't a single positive thing I can say about this homosexual. 1 point for the troll of allowing the player to summon your horse that's instantly raped and gets you killed
      >Putrescent Knight
4/10 annoying. Cool boss and arena but obnoxious everything else.
      >Meytr Mother
6/10 Decent. Cool quest, boss, and arena. A few stupid attacks but overall pretty good
      >Midra
9/10 Awesome. Only boss other than Romina that allows the player to attack it every once in a while. Looks amazing and was a fair fight. I wish the manor was a larger area
      >Messmer
9/10 Incredible. Only complaint is the lack of readability and has some needlessly delayed attacks
      >Bayle
6/10 Camera & AOE/10. Just zoom the fricking camera out, its not that much to ask for. Modders can help him greatly
      >Radahn
0/10 fingerprint shield/10. Indefensible in every way. This is why the US should have dropped more bombs

      >Scudatree blessings
0/10 idea. What seems like the better idea if you don't want players to do a boss rush on your new DLC?
      >scatter like 50 arbitrary items throughout random parts of the map that are absolutely necessary if you don't want the player to be two shot by any of your overtuned boss' 9 attacks in one of their combos

Both of these are so fricking overrated. Friede is a cringe ass boss that makes the game seem like a parody of itself, it's a big dude who flagelates himself while screaming nonsense and hitting you with a lordvessel coupled with an anime waifu with cryptic backstory and it has 3 phases just for the sake of being hard. It's a parody of the souls series but somehow real. And Gael is cool but he's also stretching Dark Soul's limits of flanderization with his "old hobo saying nonsense and he's also Guts" schtick. Also neither of them are particularly memorable boss fights, i actually can't even remember most of that Gael does because i beat him first time. Elden Ring and Bloodborne have far better DLC bosses

        Anonymous

        >it has 3 phases just for the sake of being hard.
Friede wasn't that hard or trying to be difficult for the sake of being difficult, that would be Radahn.
Your DLC has 3 good bosses, tops, 2 years for 3 good bosses

          Anonymous

What do you mean "my" DLC homie, i don't work for From. Friede has zero impact as a boss because she's a confusing non-character, you just walk into a chapel and start fighting this nun with a scythe. The best bosses in this series are the ones that, in addition to being a good fight, leave a lasting impact in their presentation in addition to being story-significant. Gael certainly accomplishes those categories, but Bayle, Midra, Messmer and Radahn all shit over Friede (and the... dude with a wolf? I can't even remember what the other boss of her DLC was)

That that setting, presentation and overall power level of the boss properly conveyed the feeling that i'm a mortal trying to stand against a God. It felt, and sadly there's no other word to describe this, epic. Like an insurmountable opponent, both lore and gameplay-wise, which made it very rewarding to finally beat.

The original Radahn fight had more weight behind it than the new one. This new fight feels like you’re fighting a gimped radahn that is heavily being carried by Miquella’s spells. Rotted Radahn had an entire festival just to take him down and his mock-meteor phase transition changes the time of day. And he was doing all that while mindless and holding the stars back.
And yes the entire point of the fight (I guess) is that he’s miquella’s mind-raped consort or whatever so the boy its really a fight against Miquella and not Radahn or whatever, but even then, you beat the boss and can only get ONE of Radahn’s swords. You gotta dupe it for the second one. Like, the original radahn remembrance gave me both his swords for the price of one, what the frick?
                >muh different ashes
Stances exist and these literally have the exact same stats. Something just feels off about this fight, I like the heart stolen and mohg’s bloodflame mechanic but the former is kind of meaningless, it’s not like you’re deleveled or anything. You get a gesture, wow… I can now show OTHER PLAYERS THAT I GOT MIND FRICKED!
Still a better fight than Fortissax purely because ancient dragons are just that shit.

Literally nothing was wrong with any of those. His hitboxes were precise after the update, only his gravity waves would maybe hit you if you rolled through them like an idiot instead of jumping. The only bad thing about that fight is summoning the festival just kills him for you. He’s perfectly fine outside of that.

Worse thing about Radahn isn't even not being able to see anything during phase 2, but that if you're playing on PC it will stutter at least once for 2 seconds each attempt guaranteed, meaning you will die to one of his many sure kill strings.

Didn't use any summons, just powerstanced great hammers the whole game up until Radahn where I had to throw a shield on (take me away, gamer police)

    >Divine Lion
    8/10
I think the disdain for this boss is out of control, it's pretty straightforward and it telegraphs well. The frost phase is annoying sure but it's a fun fight overall, and a really great design.
    >Relanna
    9/10
Relanna makes me wish I could refight bosses, I really feel like I kind of "got away with one" when I killed her. Really fun combination of Pontiff Sulyvahn and Renalla.
    >Hippo
    Who cares, 6/10
Fun-ish to fight once you get the weird timings down. SotE has a lot of Dark Souls 2 influence and the hippos really feel like DS2 bleeding into Elden Ring.
    >Scadutree Avatar
    4/10
I hated this guy, he's not hard - he's just annoying. How dare they invoke the Guardian Ape gimmick on such a shit boss...
    >Romina of the Bud
    8/10
I liked this fight a lot, very fair. Her timings feel "right". Another boss that invokes DS2 vibes
    >Gaius
    9/10
Really liked this guy, reminded me of the jerk from Twilight Princess. One of the best "mounted enemy" fights. Very clean and well made fight.
    >Putrescent Knight
    7/10
    I don't know. He's just fine.
    >Metyr
    8/10
Fine, basically Astel 2.0 in a lot of ways. I found her way too late for her to be a threat.
    >Midra
    6/10
Just totally underpowered. Am I wrong? By the time most players get to this boss they'll be able to utterly flatten him. Missed opportunity.
    >Messmer
    9/10
Very fair, very learnable fight. Tough but not annoying in the slightest. Really the peak of the DLC.
    >Bayle
    10/10
Very fun dragon boss, something From has struggled with.
    >Radahn
    7/10
Dude just has way too many moves where I feel like I'm responding perfectly but still getting thrown around like my car just rolled off a cliff. Genuinely don't really know what a player is meant to do in some of these situations other than slap a shield on and block some of his shit. Otherwise, fun fight.

DS3 kids only care about the bosses

        Anonymous

There isn't much else to care for in DS3, the level design is very lackluster and the DLCs in particular are particularly bad about it (just not horsefrick valley bad). Friede, Midir, Gael and to a lesser extent Demon Princes are the only noteworthy things and everything between to get to them are varying levels of annoyance/frustration.
I like DS3 for how smooth it feels to play and it has some of my favorite From fights ever made but level design is really not a strongpoint for the game.
Not that ER is much better, it'll feel impressive and maybe even daunting on a first playthrough but you'll quickly realize that majority of places are worthless, empty and unrewarding. They also litter spots with purple items to bait you into thinking it's a major item only for it to be a worthless crafting material. Ambushes around corners and imp gangbangs also put previous From games AND Nioh/Nioh 2 to shame for how often they are done.

This is true for most of the DLC bosses. The only ones with clean visuals were Midra, Gaius, and Romina in my opinion. Everyone else was too busy, struggled with the camera, used vision-obscuring moves (frick the Skibiditree Avatar's long range thorn attack), or just barfed constant visual mess in all directions.

    >Divine Lion - 8/10
fun moveset and ideas ruined by camera lockon
    >Relanna - 9.5/10
hard. fun moveset in likes of sulyvahn. no unfair moves. only gripe is some of the combos can be really similar which can throw you off.
    >Hippo - 6/10
felt like a filler fight. not hard. decently fun though.
    >Scadutree Avatar - 4/10
another filler fight. weird gimmick. easily killed too and not a lot of different moves. mediocre.
    >Romina - 8/10
very enjoyable moveset. didnt find the camera to be gay on this one. rot isn't cancer. very fun but just not that hard.
    >Gaius - 7.5/10
decent moveset. didn't find it to be cancer with the charge like everyone else seems to, just gotta roll forward to the right or left at a 45 degree angle. easily beatable. unironically wish it was harder.
    >Putrescent Knight - 5/10
mediocre. small moveset but manages to be cancer anyways. frost bullshit was moronic and the hit windows too.
    >Metyr - 4/10
astel but easier. need i say more?
    >Midra - 9/10
great presentation. great moveset. great cinematic. ruined by being too easy and also having a dumb AOE attack u have to run from (but you cant if u are too close to a corner of the room)
    >Messmer - 9.5/10
great moves. great OST. favorite dialogue in the whole game. favorite cinematic. fun phases. too easy at the end of the day though. was expecting a phase 3 with new healthbar.
    >Radahn - 8/10
OST fantastic. really hard with lots of variety in the moves. phase 2 spams the screen w/ lights to block your vision & is impossible to predict a lot of the times where it'll fall so u get randomly hit & stunned. also moves like the one where he spams 4 illusions at u from the air before slamming at u finally as the 5th are borderline impossible to dodge. everyone i've seen do it cheeses it by running out of the range or parries.
    Bayle - 10/10
BEST OST BEST COMBOS BEST ANIMATIONS. NO HITBOX ISSUES. LOCKON IS GOOD. SUPER HARD AND FAIR. BEST FROMSOFT BOSS OAT. IF U DISAGREE U MUST REPLY OR UR MOM DIES IN HER SLEEP TONIGHT

I’ll only rank the ones I’ve played against so far:
    >Divine Lion - 3/10
Ugly as sin, awkward wind ups and timing, atrocious camera.
    >Relanna - 4/10
Uninspired design. Another oval arena. The epitome of combos that go on too long. Looks like a twink Pursuer from DS2
    >Hippo - 2/10
Feels like a fake boss fight. Something thrown together in 20 minutes.
    >Romina - 7/10
Solid boss fight. Readable moves. Believable and natural feeling wind-up. Telegraphed dives. Your fault if you mess up. Ugly design.
    >Gaius - 2/10
Same as hippo. Doesn’t feel like a boss fight. Just an inflated and/or oversized regular enemy.
    >Putrescent Knight - 5/10
Design is cool. Moves a little annoying but not too bad. Hard to fricking see though, drags it down some.
    >Midra - 5/10
    Fine. Not great, not terrible.
    >Messmer - 6/10
Really cool design and buildup. Awkward timings and too many visual effects to clearly see him bring it down. The snake mode is hard to track and makes it unrealistic for beating him first try.
    >Radahn: 4/10
Haven’t beaten him yet but the location and final aspect of him bolster the bs from phase 2
    >Bayle, the Dread - 6/10
    Dragon cool.

    >radahn 5/10
I liked the lion, bayle, messmer. I haven’t fought some of the side bosses but I beat radahn yesterday and holy frick what a letdown. The second phase is bad but it was even more disappointing when I found out he can be parried. Went down I think on my 7th attempt when I got the timings down. I’d give radahn a 5/10 and that’s being generous

He is the one boss that completely embody the shitty "anime combo that lasts forever" meme and not because he never stops attacking but because he never stops moving, he is literally impossible to hit unless you wait for 1 of the 3 different openings hes got and have a weapon that is at least 1 great katana in length. I became so frustrated with his movements that I for the first time ever actually used a bow to kill a boss, other than him never giving you an opportunity to actually counter attack he was piss easy since all of his attacks are extremely telegraphed and he deals frick all damage at 11 blessings.

He was a shitty test of a players patience and nothing more

I think From's games are somewhat lackluster in the OST front (especially for a Japanese studio), with the vast majority of songs being an undescript chorus that just blends into each other but yes, you're right, they really stepped up for this one. The Dancing Lion has a fantastic theme and Metyr has my second favorite song in the whole game, only losing to Radagon's boss theme

          >I legit can't even tell when people are just shitting around or if you are all literally terrible players anymore
I just don't have modern Fromsoft brain rot. I don't play these games because they're hard, they used to be about using your tools and attentiveness to skillfully navigate a tough situation or level. This is even more pronounced in ER, which just fricking loves ambushing the player as often as possible. Why the frick should I play "fair"? The game and its bosses aren't entitled to a fair fight, and when the game offers such an obvious way to utilize a safe strategy against a boss, why not use it? If they didn't intend for sniping to be a viable strategy, they could've done things to prevent it. Like spawn the lion only when you enter its arena, or put up a fog wall blocking it from sight.

If he talks to Igon all the way up to Bayle's fight he's gonna summon him because that's a juge fricking dragon and having a dedicated dragonslayer at your side makes sense. etc.

        >which attacks?
Quick cross slash with each weapon into a double slash in phase 1
I mean the horizontal quick attack with left arm then right arm and then hits with both weapons and has a big opening.
If i dodged the first attack the second one ALWAYS hit me, if the first one hit me then both attacks hit me. You could always dodge the third part of the attack and punish tho.

In phase 2 the big ass aoe he usually opens p2 with
It takes forever to detonate and i didnt see any visual clue when to dodge so you had to "count" in your head but it also always lagged me slightly making it harder.

In phase 2, you can just outrun the atomic bomb. Timing is extremely tight, the first one is easy to dodge since he doesn't start next to you. But mid-fight ones suck.

Never figured out how to dodge the double slash into cross-slash. Always get hit by the second slash.

If you block right as you're about to get hit you take reduced stamina consumption, damage negation is boosted and your guard counter is buffed. It lasts a really long time, easily enough to last any boss. My final attempt against Radahn was like 4 minutes long and I didn't run out.

I try blocks out with weapons that have 40+ guard boost, you can get the occasional useful block and guard counter with those even without the talisman. I beat him with a Greatsword block. I found the greatswords had a better guard counter because for the vertical slice into horizontal combo he does before doing the quake slash, after deflecting the horizontal slashes you could get a counter in and roll the final slash, then counter the earthquake/charge attack/jump attack him. Light Greatsword double slash wouldn’t let me do that.

I think the most entertaining things about this thread is how every single boss has someone singing its praises and every single boss has someone claiming its the worst thing ever created by man and everyone involved in its creation should be tortured to death.

All the bosses in the DLC are plagued by shit camera that can't track their big floaty anime moves, and/or which they're way too big for. They're also all way too obsessed with AoE spam. Can't wait for the next game to have all 360° AoE attacks, because frick positioning, right?
Bosses also have way too few openings, almost no commitment to any of their moves, and too little downtime. I also feel like they jacked up the poise on relevant enemies and bosses in the DLC, but that might be a result of them having fewer opening to get hits in. Playing the DLC with a colossal weapon was a fricking chore. I actually had to get back to spamming jumping attacks on most relevant things, because even guard countering has become unreliable. Relentless endless combo strings means you'll still eat a hit and likely get staggered out of your attack on counter, and many enemies and bosses now disengage at the end of their combo, so just when you'd get in a counter, they do a little hop backwards out of range.

DLC is custom built for fast weapon spam, and HP pools are built for bleed spam, with Radahn taking the cake. It's like they designed this DLC around the gaygiest of metagays. The game turned from an uphill slog into a complete joke the second I switched from colossal guard counter to bleed backhand blades.

Mostly the charge attack and him running around everywhere, the timing to dodge him seems tighter than the timing to not get hit by a second swing from Rellana, and for the running around, fighting with Torrent at first seems like the solution but it's not reliable, fortunately i had a faith build going so at least i had ranged options

I wonder if Fromsoft ever intended for Radahn to be a fun fight, or if they just wanted him to be really hard and nothing else. I genuinely don't understand how they thought giving him a massively inflated HP pool, relentless aggression, endless aoe spam attacks with double and triple hitboxes would make for a fun fight. He's barely interactive, most of the time is spent dodging and looking at his cutscene anime attacks as you slowly whittle down his Midir-tier life bar. Once you get over the "visual spectacle", the fight is just a joyless slog.

I thought he was plenty of fun and, with deflect in mind, is fun to the point that he should be the model of what a hard boss in a game like Elden Ring should be. I don't even know where you're coming from with endless aggression and inflated HP pool, his health is pretty reasonable and while he's still aggressive, relative to other bosses I found pretty clear opportunities to heal or buff.

It would be fine if it was triggered by trying to kill Miquella or something. Sort of like the ancient dragon fight in DS2, a "what did you fricking expect" fight. The DLC really made me want to replay Bloodborne, just as a reminder that fighting aggressive and fast bosses doesn't have to feel like shit. Even with all the fancy overblown ashes the game throws at you, I still felt like my moveset was completely gimped compared to bosses, a feeling I never had in BB, where the player's tools match up perfectly with what each boss can do.

          Anonymous

Exactly. And I think Fromsoft also hit and upper ceiling here. I've been playing since DeS and really loved every game and even got into AC but if the next game is trying to outdo this DLC's difficulty again and then that game's DLC needs to up the ante again I just consider myself to be a filtered casual. 15+ years is an amazing run but I know my limits and thid power creep is just too much for me.

Radahn would be boring in Sekiro, people say this same thing with Malenia and it's the exact same, either one of them would play like any other Sekiro boss. Radahn with deflect in Elden Ring is a lot of fun because dodging is still a meaningful defensive option and not something you just do when the game tells you to and learning what to deflect and what to dodge, when to get in a guard counter, having to deal with moves where you might not want to do either like Miquella's light all make the game interesting in a way that it wouldn't be if you just pressed L1 when he hit you.

  95. 3 days ago
    Anonymous

I've come to the conclusion, that I don't like when bosses in Soulsgames have moves that I just don't know HOW to dodge. Its fine that I don't remember to dodge them during the fight, or I get baited, or whatever. But after trying dodges to all the cardinal directions, then running, then running AND dodging to all directions, then jumping and nothing works, its not that fun.

      Anonymous

yeah, the visual clutter on some bosses also just inflates the time it takes me to decipher the moves and find the timings and directions. given enough time I could probably do it but my capacity for frustration just isn't that high anymore. Grinding radahn's first phase was fun and I think Imhim being the final boss motivated me but I felt absolutely no shame just using Spirit ashes on all the other bosses because they took the boss attempts down to 1-2 tries vs. 50 every time.

That meteor? You have to run to the sides of the arena, preferably the right (north I think) side. It’s such a dumb attack. He just zooms down and you’re dead. That’s another problem I had with the dlc, way too many nuke AoE moves. Those and some questionable grabs that just look like normal attacks until you get grabbed are the worst generalized parts

I don't get why people like Bayle. Yeah, summoning Igon is great, and the fight is certainly visually impressive, but as an actual fight it's kinda shite. It's a dragon, so fricked up camera and lock-on is already a given, then it's visually messy, especially in the second phase when everything on screen turns the same color, and he does that same shit as the other spectacle bosses, where he'll just leave the fight to do some QTE-tier big anime attack.

        Anonymous

the bar for dragon fights is low and it's a spectacle boss done right, unlike another big mf on the list, also dont lock on

I don't know for me, for a From giant boss fight, it was very visually clear and the camera provided minimal trouble. The boss also had a nice balance of being aggressive but not an endless wombo combo, and for the most parts, the attacks were easily readable. Even his projectile spam when flying is fairly avoidable, and only attack that gave me trouble was his swoop after flying because I would sometimes get clipped even after dodging. Overall, it's an entertaining spectacle fight that works well.

I mean it makes sense for me since I too rated those 3 very high. They're the upper limit of hard but fair, had cool designs and the lore/atmosphere behind them was amazing.

I think radahn's phases should be treated as 2 different bosses entirely. phase 1 was very cool to fight, phase 2 not so much. But he also loses out on the "soft" factors like lore and shit because he kinda came out of nowhere and doesn't even say a word.

    >Midra - 10/10

    - 10/10
Midra but cranked up to 11, a perfectly executed tightrope walk of fair and bullshit. For me personally it feels like Malenia's fight but fixed.
    : 9/10
Phase 1 is there with Midra and Messmer, but phase 2 I have mixed feelings about. Personally I like the idea of a boss thats super hard even when using ALL the bullshit you have but at the same time I think a boss should be reasonably beatable with the traditional methods. Aside from the final boss its not too bad. Messmer already sticks close to you so its not that much different to capitalize on the openings and with something like dancing lion for example there are blind spots you can exploit . One of the bigger differences would be gaius since he tends to charge past you especially if you dodge, harder to punish but technically possible. You also tend to get the advantage of getting a stance break or two on the bosses going in melee.

The DLC really hammered home just how fricking pointless the open world in this game is. They got even lazier with it here, it's genuinely not worth exploring as there's just absolutely fricking nothing of value anywhere outside of the designated and easily identifiable points of interest. If you didn't have to collect the scooby snacks, you could outright skip half the areas and miss nothing.

I disagree, I found exploration extremely rewarding because it felt very dense except for 3 areas: abyssal woods and both finger ruins.
. Everything else always had rewarding exploration for me.

The only bad thing about the size is that it makes replaying ER a slog. You know what you want to get on following playthroughs so you just have a checklist for your build and now with literally 50 skibidi fragments it's a long ass list AFTER you already collected all the needed smithing stones, golden seeds and sacred tears and equipment for your build.

ER is probably the first time I'm just gonna cheat me the gear and mats I need for new chars just to save time.

I was already bored of the open world in the basegame, and the DLC broke the camel's back. As you said, both the finger ruins, Abyss Woods and cerulean coast were extremely empty. And a lot of the other zones had the same problems, you just found shit or nothing and the enemy density was really low. I wish they had more legacy dungeons, I think only Shadow Keep can be considered one, the smaller castles are too small and the Madness Mansion was also too short for that.

Would you guys like Elden Ring 2 or another, shorter and more linear DLC with 5 bosses? They’d include Godwyn in this hypothetical expansion.
Or do you just want them to move on from this “IP” entirely?

Move on, Elden Ring was pretty cool but just like i don't want every Zelda to always be this gigantic ordeal from now on with BotW and TotK i don't want that for Souls either, i'm ready for a Dark Souls 4

I'm with you except for DS4
Ignoring AC, fromsoft sucks at sequels. DaS, DeS, BB, Sekiro and ER blow DaS2 and 3 completely out of the water. Dark Souls was already finished story and if it wasn't for bamco wanting to print easy money the sequels would've never happened.

I don't even care if the call the new game Shadow Souls or something and effectively plays like a dark souls 4 but we need a clean reset to guarantee greatness.

But I also enjoyed ER's open world, same as BotW's and TotK. But I'm also satured now so both series shouldn't make any more games with OW for a decade.

I don't think they can do anything with ER. They need to make a sequel where they:
      1) Fix the fricking camera
      2) Make the game less linear
      3) Make caves more rewarding
      4) Make crafting useful
      5) At least try to have a story

I want Fromsoft to make more focused games like Sekiro or Bloodborne. The Souls formula is falling apart, and Elden Ring makes this very obvious. They clearly want to make fast-paced action games, but you can't have these fast, aggressive, spammy, infinite stamina bosses in a game where you also try to sell the idea that being a slow, heavily armored tank who trades hits through hyper armor is viable. What From does with bosses, and what the game wants to be true are just incompatible. Designing content to be equally challenging to both ends of the speed spectrum is fundamentally impossible, and becomes more so the more these ends move apart, which they did more and more with each game. Strategies and builds that work well during levels completely fall the frick apart at bosses, because they seem designed under a completely different mindset.

From does better work when they have clear limits. Bloodborne and Sekiro have some of the smoothest and tightest gameplay, simply because it's very clearly defined what the player can do. There's no wildly different ability to deal with certain things based on a dozen factors. Everyone's dodge/deflect works exactly the same, so all content can be designed to challenge that precise level of ability.

        >The souls formula is falling apart
The two games you suggest are the best of it were the worst selling, and elden ring is enormously more popular

Popularity is not an indicator of quality. Looking at the gameplay and the patchwork of sloppy fixes they've stapled to the basic formula, it's clear what's happening.

I wouldn't mind it but Elden Ring's story feels pretty complete. Story wise this dlc was perfect. There's nowhere to go besides a prequel I guess.
I would rather have a short written epilogue saying what the frick happens after the Ranni ending. Doesn't need a whole game. It worked fine in ds3 and bloodborne but seeing the same vague thing again has me a bit annoyed

I don't want any more of these games or DLCs because it's clear they have the idea that they must make everything harder and harder every time. I beat I Wanna Be the Guy and the bosses are reminding me of that now, a series of inputs you have to learn through trial and error and perform perfectly for minutes at a time or start over from the beginning. I'm fricking tired of this kind of blindfolded simon says challenge. I'm over it. I liked Dark Souls for being an unforgiving world to explore and unlock its secrets, but the bosses weren't obnoxiously hard (and all in the same way, by having flailing unreadable combos you have to memorize and sticking to you like glue on top of having ranged punishes just in case you happen to get out of their combo spam) just for the sake of it, you just had to take them seriously like you had to take almost every enemy seriously. Nowadays it seems like these games are just being made for the sake of creating 10 million view streamer reaction videos.
PS if I wanted another punishing souls combat game I'd ask for Sekiro 2 because at least then you don't have the illusion of RPG mechanics making you think you're allowed to be a caster or go without a fricking shield

I'm with you. The combat system of souls was always too simple for them to try to evolve it to this epic action game. It worked better in das1+2/des, when it was much slower pace and boss-runs were more punishing.

Maybe give the new LotF a try. I found the bosses there refreshing return to older times, they had like 3 hit combos max, with limited moveset that you could learn and pretty big pauses afterwards to deal damage.

          Anonymous

It was always epic, but you're right they shouldn't have evolved it this way. Remember when Ornstein and Smough were a tightly carefully designed gank boss whose moves complemented each other but also contrasted and frequently lead them to separate? Remember how you could avoid being overwhelmed by them by knowing what to do? Imagine that boss now, with both of them bumrushing you the instant you walk through the fog gate and you have no option but to roll through both of their combos simultaneously and sweat your ass off for opportunities to hit r1 once. And it won't matter which one you kill first because either way phase 2 is just going to have even more insane combos but now with a bunch of aoe magic ground shockwave bullshit and teleports and anime showstopper spectacle attacks for streamers to basedface at in their reaction video.

          >I beat I Wanna Be the Guy and the bosses are reminding me of that now
Funny, I recently thought that the way ER approaches level design reminded me of IWBTG. Every other item you see out in the open is some kind of trap or ambush, every other room has enemies tucked away in corners, dead angles, or dug underground/teleporting in with some specific enemies, every other encounter has additional enemies hidden out of sight. It's so consistent that it actually wraps around to being completely ineffectual, as you just start expecting a trap everywhere, and it's almost always correct.
I've also found that generally speaking, the more trouble, or the more dangerous it is to get an item, the less worth it will be to do so. The game actively mocks you for overcoming some dangerous scenario or trap by giving you complete trash loot at the end. And again, it's not just an occasional thing that happens in a thematically fitting area, it happens all the fricking time.

It's the same kind of stupid as Dark Souls 3, where there were literally more mimics than actual chests.

            >where there were literally more mimics than actual chests
To me, the placement of the first mimic in DS3 is probably the single most indicative moment as to where From's priorities lie with these games. You can see the extreme change in direction and intent that has ruined a core aspect of these games, just by comparing the use and placement of mimics in DS1 and DS3.
            >DS1
            >first mimic is almost halfway through the game
            >after the player has opened dozens of chests
            >in an area littered with obvious and hidden traps, designed to make the player very careful and attentive
            >the chest is placed askew in the middle of an otherwise unremarkable room with no obvious threat, a rarity in this area, naturally making the player look for a floor switch or other trap
            >the player subconsciously knowing what a regular chest looks like combines with the heightened sense of awareness fostered by the level design to either make him spot the inconsistency in chest visuals, or at least suspect that this might not just be a regular chest
This is the height of fairness and the "be careful and take things seriously" design that was core to DS1. The game indirectly gives the player all the knowledge and mindset he needs to spo the trap, even if it's something he's never encountered before and would normally have no reason to suspect.
            >DS3
            >literally the first chest the player is likely to find is a mimic
Designed to be unfair and get a cheap kill off the player, unless he comes in with the foreknowledge of mimics being a thing at all.

I don't know why they're so terrified of enemies having reasonable poise. You could stagger bosses in BB with regular attacks, but in ER I can wipe out 90% of a bird warrior's HP without them so much as flinching. Even guard counters with their sizable poise damage multipliers only flinch them with heavier weapons. It's ridiculous.

I like those fights anyway, but I don't have a problem with easy bosses and I think a boss could be considerably easier than Consort Radahn or Malenia and still be impactful, Gehrman just isn't difficult even by Bloodborne standards and it makes it so it's over with it sooner than I'd have hoped. I'd have preferred if he were around as difficult as Ludwig, which is also a great fight that isn't undercut by its difficulty at all.

BB is also the game that does the Fromsoft "storytelling" best. It doesn't put all the pressure on piecing together item descriptions to even understand what any of these people are talking about, but instead has stronger environmental storytelling, and more informative dialogue. You can get a fully coherent, sensible story out of BB just by talking to NPCs and taking in the environment, which hasn't really been the case since DS1.
