>Remember how Reforged fricked it all up
>Feel sad wishing that I could play the original again
>Even if it was just the campaigns frick man
>Suddenly remember something
>Vaguely remember playing them at school
>Think carefully
>Remember that there was a portable version on the school PCs
>Remember that it was something we would play at lunch
>Remember that at one point I put it on a USB to take home
>Remember the old laptop I put it on
>Immediately rush off to find it at my parents' house
>Sure enough there it is
>Start it up and check the files
>It's still on it
>Put it on another USB and put it on my current PC
>It still runs majestically and all the campaigns and custom games too
>Realise I can enjoy this game again
Frick I almost wanted to cry I was so happy.
Thought I'd lost the chance to play the Tyrande story ever again.

My brother. I used to have like five USBs, each with a different game in it. My friends and I would copy them onto the computer during computer class and have LAN party, then delete them after we were done.
    Those were good times.

Crazy that the whole thing is only like 1.25GB as well.

Yeah. Amazing how it would just work by a simple copy and paste too.
Frick, now you make me want to dig my old stuff out of storage and find those USBs. Would be fun to call over the lads and have a LAN party again like old time.

            >less compression

I am a codelet so I'm just regurgitating something I saw forever ago, but I remember someone saying that it was a three way shitfest
between shorter dev times leading to less emphasis on optimisation and cleanup,
better consumer hardware both in the sense of what is out is better, and that high end rigs are in the hands of more people, leading to a mentality of "lol only poorgays will care"
and building a lot of games for console (which are rich only in HDD space) and then just lazily porting over to PC without doing any tightening up
file sizes ballooned and never really dropped back down

          combination of 4 things
          1. ubiquity of cheap fast storage space means less need to compress and optimize (market can bear it without the extra work)
          2. consolidation of development onto fewer game engines which happen to be extremely fatty and love gigahueg textures, especially Unreal (does not affect every game but is a big part of the problem)
          3. gamers (allegedly) want le uncompressed textures and also audio
          4. related to #2 developers work more and more with middleware and prefab tools which means both less 'purpose-built' engines and assets and also less technically developed engineers to optimize engines and assets

There have been some cases of very poor compression. The Skyrim EE release being one example. Rather than do standards better, many companies just got rid of standards.

Textures are mindless fluff only enjoyed by casuals, it should be the one that developers turned into DLC.

How can this stupid people be more on a computer than I ever was on their age, and not manage to do some basic shit I did with half their age is shocking xD

Zoomers have been on the internet practically all their lives but not on PCs, they were using smartphones and tablets. Zoomers have only adopted PCs recently for gaming and never really used them much before that.

    WC3 CLASSIC POST-REFORGED GUIDE

    >I have classic WC3 installed, what should I do to not lose it to Reforged?
Don't let it update, never launch it with the Launcher, only Warcraft3.exe.
    >I don't have classic WC3 installed, can I download the old client from Battle.net?
No. That client has been replaced with a 30GB version of Reforged with new graphics turned off.
    >Can I just install the game from my CDs?
Yes, but the highest version you can get to offline is 1.27b. ANY non-Reforged client will immediately try to install Reforged if connected to Battle.net.
    >Can I play on official Battle.net with my classic client?
    No.
    >I just want to play WC3 campaign for the first time. What version do I download?
    Without widescreen? 1.26b
    With widescreen? 1.30.1
    >What are the differences in versions?
1.26b is the most bug-free single-player. This version does not have official widescreen support. Unofficial widescreen mods exist but stretch the UI: https://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/renderedge-graphic-modification-for-warcraft-iii.288375/
1.27b is the latest offline version (only requires the patch file, no need to connect to Battle.net). However, 1.27a introduced the missing ambient sounds bug that didn't get resolved until 1.30.1
1.29.2 is a relatively bug-free single-player with widescreen support. 1.29.1 is also passable but has more bugs. Check the patch notes to see if you mind.
1.30.1 and on fix the ambient sounds issue. This is also the version supported by WC3Connect if you ever want to play online multiplayer including custom maps in a Battle.net-like environment, but outside Blizzard's official Battle.net
1.31.1 is the latest pre-Reforged version. This version added a lot of modding/world editor updates like LUA support.
PTR builds do not support LAN play

Supposedly, 1.35 is cracked too, but at that point might as well just play the Resharted client. Although Blizz has been fixing their trash slowly, I don't know if all the old stuff is compatible or how alive is the custom map scene.

What version is the most recommended?

        Anonymous

Depends on what you want, which maps etc.
As far as I know, 1.26, 1.27 and 1.28 are used on things like Eurobattle and Gameranger but the multiplayer works up to 1.30.1 with no problem. I played on that with my friends using Gameranger a few years ago.

No it doesn't, you sperg moron. Who gives a shit about the aesthetics. People don't play wc3 for the aesthetics, which were always cartoony cringe trash. They play it for the gameplay and the custom games, which are all still exactly the same. Go watch a movie if you care so much about aesthetics.

Og dude specifically asked about the campaign and as dude who similarly mainly care about the campaign too, aesthetics are at the very core of that experience. Sure mechanics are important too but aesthetics are what elevates a good game to true greatness.
And the original art design was as much a result of technical limitations as they are of needing clearly recognizable units for the gameplay, and the end result was unique and composed enough to be just right for the fantasy feel. It's WoW that later completely fricked up the design.
Seriously If you only care about mechanics go play 4xs or something like aurora or non steam dwarf fortress.

You probably already heard of this one already, but one that really stuck to my head was When The Freedom Slips Away. A lot of fun with neat details like equipment actually showing up on your model and quests from what I remember. It even has a sequel campaign called The Wreckage. I just hope you really like the song White China though, that song plays THE WHOLE TIME. I had it stuck in my head for weeks and keet humming it to myself.

The camerawork on the cutscenes just stop working in later parts, either from bugs or the author just being lazy, not sure which. But either way, a lot of fun and you can feel the soul the author put into it.
