Tolkien was a revolutionary precisely because he got the idea of creating a story in which there was a definite conflict between Good and Evil that went beyond and was stronger the individual characters.
R. E. Howard's Conan, which had a titular character who was a thief, marauder, pirate, liar, assassin, overthrower of old kingdoms, conqueror, dictator etc... came before Tolkien.
One of Tolkien's favourite works, The Worm Ouroboros, which once again came before LOTR, features a world bathed in endless war between the Demons and the Witches which the protagonist decide to start all over again in eternal recurrance for the pure love of fight and slaughter and blood at the end of the book.
The issue with "new fantasy" isn't the lack of morals and good and evils, but how boring, STERILE and low energy it is.
The endless quips, the faux subversion, the pretending to be edgy and amoral while repeating the endless tripe and opinion featured in any trash news article and reddit post, the lack of courage in all forms, the endless referentiality not even to age old myths but to recent, better fantasy works.

I love LoTR with all my heart, it's the only book series I keep on the same shelf as the Bible but it didn't really invent anything exceptionally different when it comes to adding new things to fantasy. Are you sure? There was a folklore story I read awhile ago that depicted elves as these ugly nasty things. That came before Tolkien's time for sure. But very few artists actually take inspiration from those stories. I think the scene is just stuck in rut.

When I was a kid playing DnD we were constantly trying frick every single female we came across in any given campaign. BG3 tried to capture this I think but they failed to make it sensical. Or maybe the visualizations make it uncomfortable. I haven't figured out why Larians interpretations of those wild campaigns didn't track. I guess it just comes off as too serious.

Tolkien didn't create fantasy, he was just very successful at it. His books are a very dry read, especially in modern day.
D&D has always been about having fun with friends playing whatever and however the hell you like, the game massively reflects that its just for fun no matter what you do. I couldn't see myself playing this without three friends in all honesty.

Or maybe something like Neverwinter Nights tool set where you could craft unique experiences for your friends. It's missing something very important, it's nuanced and I can't figure out what that missing element is.
