Almost every single historical figure lived the same way they did IRL, Leonardo was an inventor, Charles Dickens was a Writer, Richard the Lionheart was a king. They don’t altar shit so ridiculously that you have Mecha-Napoleon fighting the Were-Prussians at Waterloo.

Yeah, but Leonardo making functional tanks and flying machines is just as ridiculous as this Black person samurai. Although, the diffwrence in intentions are obvious, a fun "what if" scenario vs "this black guy was totally a samurai, don't look into it"

          Anonymous

          >Yeah, but Leonardo making functional tanks and flying machines is just as ridiculous
          1. He was an inventor, and all of those were based off of his actual designs
          2. The flying machine didn’t work properly and needed to be kept aloft by braziers that were scattered around
          3. The rest were destroyed by Ezio so any record of them being used or created would have been nonexistent
This shit has an explanation, it doesn’t go against the grain or claim anything that wasn’t already there. Where as Yasuke wasn’t a samurai and wasn’t in the country long enough to be anything more that a literal footnote in history.

That was the rumor at the time. Nobunaga specified a position for Yasuke that would have put them in close physical proximity.

I'm hoping they add a gay scene so bad man. All these cope posters being forced to defend that will be hilarious.

A gay scene would be far more historical than anything else shown in the trailer so far.

While it's true that Samurai often lusted for boypussy, that doesn't mean Nobunaga indulged in that behavior, especially with him.

Yasuke wasn't Japanese. He was a random adventurer who wound up in Japan. That said, a lot of societies, especially historical ones, have completely different views on sex from our own.

I mean samurai yaoi was a thing, and SOMEONE has to be the best in the world at it. There really isn't anyone better than her in English, and I'm not confident I could find a better one in Japanese.

She's a legit scholar who can actually read shit in the japanese equivalent of shakespeare. She's not a japanese native, which explains some of the easy misses the trailers had about the weather and culture but I suspect any historical problems aren't her fault. She's published some academic shit in Japanese.

She just happens to specialize in yaoi, and is a potential contender for biggest coomer ever in that field.

she's low-key trying to promote interracial BL

I'd hate to see what happens if she ever REALLY cut loose.

                >The new lady-in-waiting is a chigo: Sexual fluidity and dual transvestism in a medieval Buddhist acolyte tale

Japan has loads of weird geneder shit, which makes trannies completely lose it when they see something like Viv or Bridget or Astolofo or whatever the frick his name is.

Come to think of it, this also means she LITERALLY has a justifcation to have underage yaoi shit, and qualifies for a TAX BREAK when she buys BL books.

You seem to be missing that that’s the issue. That’s like having a genius writer that can write masterpieces but specializes in slash fics. Or a brilliant artist that can make master work paintings and he specializes in Sonic OCs. The sheer absurdity that someone in such a prestigious fields and position would specialize in something that is usually the domain of smelly teenage girls is both off putting and hilarious.

Thats why its so annoying that stupid piggu gaijin trannies glom onto these characters. They aren't "trans", they are a fully sexual object, or a joke. Their existence is not a sign of acceptance, its a sign that domming a feminine male is a fetish that exists or that crossdressing is funny. The mere suggestion that a manjaw troony from the west is equivalent to these fictional characters would confuse or disgust the average jap.

Sort of. She is very much a legitimate historian. She's Japanese, but lives in the US and married a white dude, thus her last name. She's been a professor in both Japanese language and history and won lots of teaching awards. There are probably hundreds of weebs that actually have met and liked this woman as their teacher. While she is highly educated in general Japanese history and language, she is most well known for her published works specifically on analyzing the role of male-male sexual relationships in feudal Japan. She has several books written on breaking down the written accounts of gay stuff from that time period. It's not that she invented it or really has an agenda either; her books are basically her saying, "Hey, look at all this gay shit lmao."

If anything, her main points in the books seem to be along the lines of saying, "Japan is the way it is now partly because it has a history of openly gay stuff, which is very different from Europe during the same time period."

Its actually kind of weird, considering they all simultaneously still looked down at the frickee.
Might have something to do with most of those cultures keeping their women for marriage. So you didn't have anything to frick but bussy or prostitutes (expensive), or rape if you happen to get lucky and go to war, before you got a wife. Might be a status thing too, considering you had to be relatively wealthy to have a page/retainer/boywife. Japan especially is weird because their classiest prostitutes didn't necessarily frick. I'm no anthropologist of course, so what do I know

gay/straight is a very modern idea. ancient cultures were all about dominant/submissive. nothing wrong with a dude fricking another dude, but getting fricked was shameful. it's not quite that simple, but that's the gist of it.

No. A lot of it is propaganda written later. Most Greek shit is just everyone calling each other gay, then when a city state fell everyone wrote how that proved they were gay. Rome just called every civilization gay. If they hated you they called you gay pedos that practiced human sacrifice.
That's why so much of history is trying to find corroborating sources.
When Rome renamed Judea after the 5th israeli Revolt they picked the Philistines specifically because Philistines meant gay greeks in Roman culture so they were calling the israelites a bunch of gay greeks.

When it was harder to frick a woman without paying for it, you'd have to make do with what you had.
Casual sex was not common back then, and visiting brothels too often was a danger because of disease or social shame. If you couldn't rape some peasant girls on campaign that season, you took what you could get from younger boys around you.

It's because campaign, especially sieges were long - years, sometimes decades long and women were often not brought along so ken needed a really available fricktoy. In cultures where "camp followers" were a thing boy fricking was less common due to pussy-availability.

People will seethe at this post, but it's true. Japanese people think Yasuke is "cool" because he is basically a Giga homie meme. Here's a analogy:

Imagine if during the American Revolutionary war, there was some random Japanese guy that came to America, met George Washington, and followed him around for a while. Maybe happened to supposedly be present at one battle. And the only things we knew about him is that he had a sword and fought people at least once. People would bring this guy up way more than he really warranted because of the "cool factor" and he would get documentaries and shit made about him. Kids' textbooks would probably even have a paragraph about him in some kind of "Did you know? Fun fact!" format.

Yasuke is like that for Japanese people. The average person doesn't know history well and would have zero clue who he is, but the people that know about him usually are like,
        >Holy shit! Did you know there was this giant black guy that hung out with Nobunaga!? WTF that's so cool!
It isn't because they worship him or black people, but rather he just seems weirdly exotic and out of place for the history he was a part of, so people think he's neat. They have statues and shit of him despite no one really knowing what the hell he really looked like. He inspires a disproportionate amount of art because he's novel.

    Here's another thing.
Nobunaga has one confirmed butt buddy, Mori Ranmaru who was 16 years old when they all died. On the night of his assassination, Oda retired to his room and brought along exactly 2 people. Mori and Yasuke. The rest of his top men, guards and family members were in the same house but were still drinking and partying.

When the attack started, Oda asked who was attacking and then sent out Mori to die fighting them and buy time while he has Yasuke stay and cut his head for when he commits sudoku.
Why would he send the 16 year old who wasn't even an actual samurai, to hold them off if Yasuke was the supposed strong african warrior turned samurai? Wouldn't it be better to send him out to take them on and have his beloved 16yo yaoi boy take his life?
And if he wasn't that much of fearsome samurai, what was he doing in Oda's room with the 16 year old when the rest of his guards and men were left outside?

        Shincho Koki
It was a chronicle/diary by an Oda scribe writing about whatever Nobunaga is currently doing and shilling about how good his master is and ended up being publish as Nobunaga's biography.
The assassination/attack part was written because he and other clan members/noblemen wanted to figure out if Tokugawa, the guy who ended up being shogun because of Oda's death, was collaborating with Akechi, the guy who attacked them, because Tokugawa was suppose to be there but didn't show up. He interviewed a bunch of the people who survived to construct a timeline of events and they confirmed that yeah Oda did left the party and brought Mori and Yasuke to his room.

Wait, if Yasuke couldn't speak Japanese and Nobunaga was killing himself how do we know he was doing the thing where he'd cut his head off if he faultered? I suppose they probably found some way of explaining this to him but I think it's more likely he just handed him a sword and was very worried when Nobunaga just starts getting himself.

I think that fixating on the samurai part of it is wrongheaded. If he were a side character you interact with, it wouldn't really matter. Even if you don't agree with the take, it wouldn't warrant more than an eye-roll (e.g., like Unity trying to make Theroigne de Mericourt more than a footnote), because it's not really out of line with the minor historical interpretations that Assassin's Creed is full of.

The problem is that he's the playable character, which is completely out of place. Most games gave you protagonists who were authentic for the location (Revelations aside), in addition to being fictional characters who you could understand not being noted in the historical record (Edward aside). Yasuke is clearly them ignoring the rules they set for themselves for transparently political reasons, which doesn't sit well with people even if they can't or won't articulate it that way.

People just see that it has a source and assume it's good, but it usually isn't except on things that have zero relation with any sort of political or social issue. You will also see that all of the "sources" use each other as their sources so it's just a big circle of nothing but it looks legitimate to a brief glance

Spoiler alert, ancient Greek society is not a monolith both in terms of individuals and across its stages in time and social classes within it. That said, pederasty was indeed a consolidated social custom weaved into their society, be it embraced and lauded or opposed. You just need to read Plato's Symposium for Christ's sake, it's one of the foundational works of Western philosophy and like half of it is devoted to literally discussing man-twink love, not that I would expect the average user of this site (a basement-dweller from Utah) to have, mind you.

          >read Plato's Symposium for Christ's sake, it's one of the foundational works of Western philosophy and like half of it is devoted to literally discussing man-twink love
I have read that. The problem with it is that it's directed to the sophists, the elites of Athens. It's not even actually about homosexuality, it's about them fricking young boys. The rich and powerful love diddling kids, that's how it is in every society. That was the case back then and it still is. The average citizens and soldiers weren't fricking each other and fricking other men wasn't accepted.

            Anonymous

But what if you got it backwards? Average Russian soldiers frick each other now and it's accepted, therefore average soldiers must have fricked each other back then, and it was accepted.

Most men wore swords from the Heian period until the Sengoku period in Japan. Oda Nobunaga sought an end to this practice, and ordered the seizure of swords and a variety of other weapons from civilians, in particular the Ikkō-ikki peasant-monk leagues which sought to overthrow samurai rule.

In feudal Japan (1185–1868), a rōnin (/ˈroʊnJn/ ROH-nin; Japanese: 浪人, IPA: [ɾoːɲiɴ], 'drifter' or 'wandering man', lit.'a person of the waves')[1] was a samurai who had no lord or master and in some cases, had also severed all links with his family or clan. A samurai becomes a rōnin upon the death of his master, or after the loss of his master's favor or legal privilege.[2][3]

Yes, samurai means to serve, but it's a word for someone born in a social cast. Not a word for a servant. I think that's what's confusing you.

Samurai (侍、さむらい) were the hereditary military nobility[1][2][3][4] and officer caste of feudal and early-modern Japan from the late 12th century until their abolition in the late 1870s during the Meiji era. They were the well-paid retainers of the daimyo, the great feudal landholders. They had high prestige and special privileges.[5]

Do you understand what "hereditary" means? It means you are born into being a samurai. You are not made a samurai.

britannica lists the most poigniant points of the term, the fact it does not state your claims means they are of no consequence or not relevant to the overall picture. if yasuke was not a samurai then it would not state so. if the title was hereditary it would state so.

He remained in power as Taikō (太閤), the title of retired Kampaku, until his death. It is believed, but not certain, that the reason he refused or could not obtain the title of shogun (征夷大将軍), the leader of the warrior class, was because he was of peasant origin.[3][4]

                Here ya go

Kabane, (Japanese: “family name”), hereditary title that denoted the duty and social rank of an individual within the Japanese sociopolitical structure from the late 5th to the late 7th century. Titles, or kabane, included the categories omi, muraji, tomo no miyatsuko, and kuni no miyatsuko.

                https://www.britannica.com/topic/kabane

Descendants of the Imperial House of Japan (皇別, kōbetsu) were given Omi and the descendants of the gods (神別, shinbetsu) were given Muraji. Of these, the most influential families were given Ōomi and Ōmuraji.

Later, as the clans began to devolve into individual households, the kabane system gradually faded from use.

All samurai clans were descended from the imperial house of Japan. it was hereditary to its core.

                >A samurai could be a ronin
"samu" in samurai is literally a kanji from "haberu", which means "to serve". You know, because samurai was a profession when you served a lord. And a tiny little feature of ronin was that they, believe it or not, served no lord.
                You're all over the place.

No. A samurai was the descendent of the nobles that the empire made military servants in the ancient times. The only way to become a samurai was to be born into one of those military families, be adopted into one of those families, or be declared samurai by the emperor like Hideyoshi was.

Yasuke was just a regular old servant.

That's not at all what I said. I said that there is a word for retainers who are not samurai. Every samurai is a retainer to the emperor, but they are called 武士 not 家来. There is a difference. Not every servant is a samurai.

          >be declared samurai by the emperor
Pretty sure the common knowledge is that he was declared samurai by Oda himself. The emperor couldn't have any decisions on his own in the first place, Japan was a military dictatorship at that time.

in 1585, Hideyoshi was formally given the new clan name Toyotomi (instead of Fujiwara) by the Imperial Court.[10]

Hideyoshi's increasing influence allowed him to seize a significant degree of power from the Oda clan following Oda Nobunaga's death in 1582. As the virtual ruler of most of Japan, Hideyoshi received the new clan name "Toyotomi" in 1585 from the emperor, and achieved the unification of Japan in 1590.[1]

Bushi means warrior you jackass. By the sengoku jidai anyone could be a bushi. It included ashigaru.

In modern usage, bushi is often used as a synonym for samurai;[9][10][11] however, historical sources make it clear that bushi and samurai were distinct concepts, with the former referring to soldiers or warriors and the latter referring instead to a kind of hereditary nobility.[12][13]

a retainer of a retinue in feudal context is different from a servant. so already you are not making a whole lotta sense. and a samurai by Oda's time is a warrior who is paid a stipend by their lord. that means literally every peasant who has a weapon and is being paid a stipend to use it is a samurai.

?t=534 essentially breaks down https://www.reddit.com/r/assassinscreed/comments/1cu71vk/why_yasuke_was_a_samurai_compilation/ which in turn breaks down japanese national archives record on yasuke, which is the best source hands down there is on the actual history behind yasuke, so unless you have a better source, which i doubt, yasuke was a samurai.

No, it's not. Samurai, page, smith, maid, can all be retainers. Every samurai is a retainer. Not every retainer is a samurai.

              From your post

The meaning of the word stipend is not supposed to prove Yasuke was a samurai all by itself. What proves Yasuke was a samurai is not he received a samurai stipend, but that he received a samurai stipend and carried Nobunaga's weapons which was the job of a samurai and had and fought with a katana at Nijō and he was mobilized and followed Nobunaga on the Takeda campaign of 1582 and remained by Nobunaga's side even after Nobunaga dismissed all his "ordinary soldiers".

The entire argument is that a page had to be from the samurai class, which is not true, as Yasuke was not born a samurai.

By that time, Nobunaga had already defeated most of his main enemies and was on the verge of conquering all of Japan.
There were no opportunities for Yasuke to go to the battlefield himself.

Why are they trying to make us believe that Japanese people welcome this game?
I can speak Japanese, so I looked up Japanese reactions to this game on the internet.
Most of them are filled with anger towards the Woke movement and the black radicals riding its coattails.
The support from Japanese people that is being introduced to the West SNS is minimal.
If you look at the comments section of such videos, you can see the honest reactions of the majority of Japanese people.
Why aren’t these reactions being introduced to the west?

Because influencing english speaking opinions on the game is the objective. What japan thinks isn't important to them at all, and they will lie constantly to get what they want..

Following all these arguments back and forth its becoming really obvious that the people who claim Yasuke was a samurai are deliberately
lying both to win progressive brownie points and to 0wnzone the heckin chuds.
