Retro console modding/Repair

I'm ordering a boxypixel aluminum SP shell soon. Can't decide between black anodize or a clear finish...

Also picked up a few dsi's for cheap to repair, but not exactly retro. I got a PS2 phat I'm working on as well, just needs a new disc drive.

Go for black, clear shit has been reddit-ed to death and I say that as fan of clear shit. I bought these GBs junk from Japan and "refurbished" them. I use original pads/speakers/etc when possible but swap out what I can't with modern parts. These lenses have the protector film still on them so they look shitty in the pics.

I realize now I misread the initial post; both finishes are nice, tough call.

Nice gameboy pockets. Always was my favorite gameboy shape. Definitely go for glass lenses if you can, I scratched one of my GBC lenses and it just looks horrible...
And yeah, by "clear" I meant bare aluminum color

I usually prefer the plastic lenses as they are more likely to be flush to the bezel. I've had glass ones be too thick, though they do look nice when they fit right.

Man unlit Gameboy screens look so soulful in images but it's the one classic gaming thing I just can't go back to. It's too much.

I've been using both a GC and a AGS-001 SP for the first time since their original lifespan pretty much, and I'm having zero issues. I have no idea why I've seen so many people complaining about this specific thing recently.

wtf are you talking about? First of all I just stated a personal preference, not an "issue" and second of all the SP is a lit screen.

It was implied you had an issue with the unlit screen. I wasn't trying to be confrontational with you or anything, though - it's just one of many times I've seen that said recently. I didn't intend to jump on you personally or anything.
            >second of all the SP is a lit screen
If I was using a lit screen, I wouldn't have brought it up. I specified the AGS-001 because you can turn the light off, and that's how I've been playing it.

Never knew you could turn the light off on SPs. Learn something new everyday.

I didn't either, until I went shopping for a GBA recently. The front lit model can turn the light off, and since I'm talking about it, honestly, it doesn't look bad with the light on. People say a lot about how blue it is, but I've found it you angle the screen away from you slightly, it pretty much looks like it would if you had a well aimed lamp.

i live in the desert and enjoy the gameboy color because the lack of a backlit screen actually makes it easier to see in intense sunlight

It looks pretty soulful under a fricking lamp too. No reason to not enjoy the original screens.

    >thinking about replacing the lens on a secondhand GBC I got
    >you can just easily pry the old one off
    Cool!
    >buy an SP that could really use a new lens
    >you have to take it apart
    Kinda gay!
Is there a good way to make sure the lens is lined up correctly on an SP? The video or two I saw looked like you had to wing it.
And can you reasonably remove the old adhesive, in either case? They didn't bother to in those same videos, and I can't tell if that's sloppy work or if it's not worth risking the extra time to invite dust into the mix, as well as having the screen exposed for longer.

I got one of my dsi’s in the mail and… lol
Still trying to figure out where this was snapped off

huh, what is that a SM resistor or cap? Should be fairly easy to locate with a magnifying glass...

Not sure what it is, appears unmarked, but I closed it up without taking a close look. Might need a circuit diagram to figure it out, or at least testing with a multimeter. I did find where it’s supposed to be, at least. The power board is also soldered in. I guess the connector broke?

Not sure if it’s worth to attempt a repair here. Those two things may be all that’s wrong with it, but who knows? May just use it as a donor console.

Love the way the metal looks for these. Too bad I don't know any games for that since I didn't have one growing up

What I meant was, I looked up the games but maybe I don't care enough because I didn't play them back then ---when I could have been more impressed by it

That gta style game with the warping textures looks good though. Might try it someday

Many such zoomers. It's fine if you just don't like the games. But Jesus, learn to use your words. Seriously, it's a valuable skill.

This is the hinges, but where do I purchase the little endcaps/tabs that keep the hinges inside?

Here's a video that shows the little endcaps/tabs.
