totk is still far from a zelda game but playing through it actually made me hate botw more than I did while playing it
it still lacks pretty much anything to denote it as zelda rather than slapping on some names and "remember me"s from much better games, but totk actually has gameplay systems that you would want to interact with
even if you ignore the autism with zoanite building mechas or something for purely utilitarian reasons it's a good system for getting more batteries and then making shit out of thin air when you get schematics
it's baffling to me that it took them a fricking sequel to remember to put some sort of main gameplay focus in their video game other than "go to the next shrine" which even in totk is more interesting, partially because the shrines are better but because the underworld delivers more on a decent 'exploration' than either botw or honestly the rest of totk does
i've only done the wind temple and while it was even more of a joke than the botw ones in terms of gameplay/mechanics it felt slightly more like a zelda dungeon rather than just 4 shrines stapled together.
yahtzee was 100% correct when he said this is just what botw should have been, and even then it's still missing fairly large parts of a zelda game, but there was certainly a pretty sizeable step in the right direction

Mankind Divided is a literal unfinished game, Shadows is incredibly lazy and derivative compared to the original that was aping off of the realistic TPS trend started in the late 00s, and both are just as guilty as Nintendo if we're equating reusing assets to fake sequels.

None of them ever will. Gankertroons will do their best to deny Nintendo's achievements, either ourt of seething jealousy or an ignorance of video game design.

Most game studios are not going invest millions of dollars and years of development in to creating entirely new game engines and THEN trying to create a game using that engine - putting hundreds of thousands of hours into play testing and refinement to ensure it wasn't a completely fricking broken mess. It would take many many years.
Most developers don't work like that. Investors will say "we want to see a game by Christmas this year". So developers don't have the drive or even the freedom to attempt something like TotK.
Instead they'll just superficially halfass Nintendo's concepts into existing game engines and think they're doing good.

I don't like Terraria but I respect what it brought to the medium. Wish either indie would make a major mainstream break or have AAA studios taking extensive notes instead of just slapping shit like "roguelite" onto their games.
Because while BoTW was the Swang Song for the Wii U (which flopped HARD), it was also the main launch title for the Switch, and a handful of very dedicated Snoys was convinced that the Switch would not only flop as hard as the Wii U, but could very well be the end of Nintendo's run as a console manufacturer.
BoTW being a brand new direction for not only the series, but Nintendo themselves (they never really did massive open world games, at least not 1st Party) added a lot of few to this fire. The Snoys were convinced that this new, weird Zelda would never catch on, and that it would tank the Switch launch.
Then, the exact fricking opposite happened. And before anyone knew it, the Switch had outsold the PS4, which at the time was DOMINATING the console markets in an almost comical fashion. The hits just kept on coming, and I really do believe a lot of the anger for both BoTW and ToTK stems from how massive it made the Switch launch.

I've played it. I own a PS5, Xbox Series X and Switch OLED. TotK is my GOTY by a mile. It's a dream game for me. Certainly the best adventure game I've ever played. It's open world exploration and next-level game design put it head and shoulders above everything else this year. And it's on a tiny little Switch. This would be the equivalent of an NES game shitting all over the SNES, Megadrive and Neo Geo.
