you can use the testament of the soul to redo the mission and spare him and that would probably unlock it
I know but it's missable if u don't or just straight up aren't aware that's a thing (unless testament of soul points out missions you don't have unlocked that u could have otherwise)
there's gotta be dlc for this game, you can easily reach the level cap and max out all your core stats before you complete all the missions on midnight difficulty
its pretty fun, enemies hit harder. if you're really having trouble you can apply confusion by using 2kat unearthly flame martial art (sweep that procs fire) and applying poision on your weapon, easily melts bosses especially with allies
been having fun just doing everything solo with polearm though

If you like samurai and the Bakumatsu period you'll probably really like it.
The only major aspect that GOT does better is graphics and performance. The gameplay and the characters are much better in this game.
If you like Way of the Samurai, Japanese history, tight combat and can tolerate a formulaic open world, go ahead and pick it up.
