RULE THE WAVES 3

Everyone's favorite spreadsheet 20th century naval warfare simulator. I've spent so many hours on it and I just got it a couple weeks ago. Post your designs, battleships, and unlucky flash fires.
I destroyed nearly every capital ship in the High Seas Fleet of the Dutch Frisian coast by encircling their fleet with my swifter warships, and it really shows how early combat can be a hellish mosh pit where it's hard to know what's going on.

I recently finished a full Austro-Hungarian campaign. It was fun, but there are definitely things that could be done to make the Mediterranean more enjoyable.
    >More possessions like Veneto and the Balearics
    >New nations like Turkey and maybe even Greece
    >The Black Sea actually being modeled in some way
As it stands I was mostly confined to beating up Italy every few years and occasionally the French. There's also Spain, but they sink into irrelevance incredibly quickly.

The Bosphorus has been closed off to warships for a pretty long time. Under different treaties and conventions. The Black Sea not being present makes sense

At this rate, Mussolini might just rise to power a few decades early with how BTFO the whole country is. We've had some victories in trench warfare (I always take the decision to let the army do its thing, interservice rivalry is a horrible thing) and now I've wiped two battleships and a fair amount of light forces. A few more victories like this and a blockade is ensured.

No, you can mod in a lot of stuff and I guess they changed the historical photographs that accompany decisions and events. You see, this is why I can't stand weebs. Why would you ever want to be immersed into larping as the naval admiral of a country a hundred years ago? No, they need "muh waifus" because they can't fathom actual historical events taking place without uguu kawaii nippon bullshit. Look at the Fate franchise, they literally genderswap historical figures into booby anime girls because weebs cannot have a genuine interest in legendary stories of heroics without that.

A bit of a late addendum: All four generations of the Austro-Hungarian battleship. Number in the top left is the completion date.
Only ended up losing 2, the lead ship of the Viribus Unitas class to an incredibly unlucky flash fire when she strayed out of her immunity zone for a couple turns and a Loudon (the only member of the class to not get scrapped by a treaty) to French air attack in the mid-40s.
Overall I'm pretty happy with every design apart from the Siebenburgen. That main battery layout is inefficient as frick but I liked how it looked. I will also add that being able to make all your capitals short ranged is great.

And the very peculiar history of Austro-Hungarian BCs.
The Minervas were designed at the turn of the century as proto-battlecruiser CA killers, but as a result of delays didn't actually enter service until after real BCs started rolling around. Despite this they did surprisingly well for themselves in a war with Italy despite the opposing side possessing the aforementioned real BCs, and I kept them around for conversion into the world's first CVs. In this role they also acquitted themselves surprisingly well, although the Minerva herself was eventually sunk by French dive bombers. I kept her sister ship, the Kantern, around until the end of the game for sentimental reasons.
The Lissas were intended to counter 12-inch gun equipped Italian BCs. Their armor was a bit on the light side but I intended to counter that by outranging the enemy.
The ships I stole from the Italians are where things get interesting. Emanuele Filiberto #1 is a mostly competent design, although I have no clue what the frick the AI was thinking with that armor layout. Her sister was sunk by my BBs in her first war, and she herself nearly met the same fate. Renamed Franz Joseph, she ironically ended up paired with the very ships designed to counter her. Served until the late 50s before getting scrapped, shooting up a couple French convoys in the interim.
More interesting is Joseph Radetzky, formerly Emanuele Filiberto #2. The Italian AI for some fricking reason decided it needed a long-range battlecruiser despite none of its potential adversaries having holdings outside the Mediterranean. Despite this, I was able to turn her into a decent carrier escort by slapping as many 5-inch guns as possible on her deck. Her finest hour was a war in the 60s where she savaged multiple Italian cruiser forces despite it being the age of missiles, and she remained in service (albeit mothballed) at the end of the game.

I got invaded by France in two locations in one month. I didn't know that was possible. Is it possible for the player to do?

Also, I had a fleet invasion of Hawaii, failed to get four transports to the objective (Actually there were two 4in batteries on the objective that I didn't notice until I noticed the objective was still pending and went to look at it with my battlecruisers) and then invaded after the victorious battle despite failing the "get four transports to the objective" objective. I didn't know that was possible either.

Prevent losses to shipping. Having "enough" ships on TP duty isn't relevant if the enemy is still sending lots of ships to the bottom on every turn, and eventually you'll get an oil shortage. If you have any ally you'll often get the "shortage prevented by timely shipments from our ally X" or whatever the verbiage is instead.

the "is the iowa is a battlecruiser" debate is long and not worth going over here
6 of those fast battleships were 27 knots
the iowas were the fast surface capital ships ever put to sea and probably would be called battlecruisers but
            1) congress would never fund a battlecruiser after jutland and hood. All funding has to come from them and no congressman will allow something that they think means "exploding deathtrap"

Large Cruisers or Supercrusiers or whatever you want to call them are an interesting case in that they kind of fit the role of the original dreadnought armored cruisers (the original battlecruisers) but not of later battlecruisers

the fast battleship is the natural evolution of the battlecruiser just as the battlecruiser was an evolution of the heavy cruiser

                Yes and no

afaik you get either territory or war reparations for X years. More points you don't spend, the more reparations.

Colonial territory (which I think is literally everything that isn't your home territory, so like, Shanghai and Hong Kong for China are colonial territories, go figure) starts out earning a lot and will slowly become a net drain over the course of the game (to the point where late game you start getting countries voluntarily releasing territories).

I did similar stuff and then noticed on design that my BC with 4 helis for ASW had an ASW value of 0.
I'm willing to believe there might be some minor bugs happening, since I also got things like
              >open design for rebuild
              >can add autoloader to 8-in 2x turrets
              >change turret size

This war just started and it's been fricking intense. An excursion into the Mediterranean with the help of Austria resulted in non stop bombings from Italy's land based planes. With several battlewhatevers foundering in heavy seas during battle. Though mostly of my Austro-Hungarian ally.

The first assault on Japan was also my first real taste of having actual aircraft carriers. Planes everywhere, both sides eating bombs and torpedoes. Their planes found my carrier group. My battleships found their carriers. But sadly had to break off due to heavy damage in the preceding hours. Along with a japanese relief force arriving just in time with a battlecruiser and supporting smaller ships. Which was too much with how damaged my force was.

RIP the almost 30 year old Huntingdon CA class. You used to beat everyone up, but you're showing your age now that the forties are just around the corner. Replacement BCs, thrice her size have slowly been entering service and should carry the war effort for hopefully another decade at least.

I'm considering removing the aft main gun and turning them into carrier escorts if anything as it is now. They are so old they don't have any AA guns at all right now. Having them on the front line is just suicide if I don't make some sacrifices.

          Anonymous

I don't remember as a dirty secondary AARer, does RTW3 have DP main guns? If so, you could always go the San-Shiki shell/Atlanta class psycho routes and turn the main battery into MORE AA battery, rather than deleting just the rear gun. Also, clarifying, do you mean to delete the aft gun to make them CARRIER escorts- aviation cruisers, specced for ASW maybe- or carrier ESCORTS, as in more AA? Why not both, maybe?

Even if you can't do a DP main battery, can you gut all but one turret replace it with an enlarged 'secondary' DP battery in the current refit system? If accuracy/caliber crowding from the guns being too close in bore is an issue, maybe refit the vestigial main battery to be a highest caliber 1-gun to eliminate that and let the things function as monitors to boot?

            Anonymous

The main guns are too large for my tech to become DP. And a rebuild would be too heavy even if they could become DP.
So removing the aft gun is the only real option if I want them to become carrier escorts. With more AA

Yes, that was the plan. The configuration is 3x2. One fore, one aft. Removing the aft gun in favour of DP AA guns would let them stay in service to cover my carriers.

            Italy, Germany, France, or Japan.

This is pretty much how every carrier battle will go. The AI will normally be bombing your carriers before you've seen a report about the enemy fleet. However, the AI is terrible at doing naval strikes so heavy/maximum CAP will shoot them all down and you're free to spend the next 12 hours searching for their carriers while dealing with only occasional enemy strikes.

      Anonymous

      Here's some useful trivia:
Small ships are hard to hit with big guns. There's a penalty to using >5 in against them.
Likewise, 5in is the maximum that can be 'hand loaded'; RoF falls off markedly beyond it as shells and charges get massively heavier. In long battles RoF can fall off for <5 as your loaders get tired.

Early on (1800-1905 basically) all-long-gun armaments are much worse because you can't reliably hit anything at respectable ranges. Your 12in guns might have huge range, but are so wildly inaccurate you're not going to reach out and touch anyone. For this reason I've heard people suggest all-HE massive secondary battery armaments early on.

As AH, you have the privilege of all of your coastline (initially) being in one easy to reach sea. You can get some more mileage out of a given amount of tonnage by going for low freeboard (you aren't going to be ocean-faring, aim to always fight in good Mediterranean weather) and short range (ditto). Use the extra tonnage for thick armor and you can do pretty well for yourself. When I have the funds to play around with it, I like to aim for starting Bs to be 15000-20000 tons.

If possible, keep them decently fast- 20kn might not be possible but 17-18 at least. If you can't catch 'em you can't kill 'em.

I never bother with torpedoes on anything larger than a CL. Especially early on they SUCK and are solely for kicking dick in at knife-fight range by destroyers or CLs. DON'T bring anything big into knife fight range, and be careful at night.

Remember to prioritize research (I like putting high priority on the things that will just quietly make you better- ship design, targeting, damage control) and intelligence (Italy, obviously, should be your priority.)

Get an ally. A decent ally can carry you through (though obviously RNG).

I was trying to prioritize guns at 12% research and only ended up getting level 0 12 inch guns in fricking 1904, meanwhile Italy had dreadnoughts by the time I even laid a dreadnaught ship down

Think less 'gun stat' and more 'negative random event'.

Later on the AI starts building them again and I personally think it’s worth it to invest in a few because your light cruisers would have a tough time fighting them, and matching them in numbers with BCs would be too expensive for any nation other than the US

              Anonymous

I know, but I kinda disagree. Your BC will demolish them, and I was pleasantly surprised when my light cruisers melted enemy CAs, mainly with HE, since the enemy was faster than me.

            Anonymous

I keep building them because I build light BCs with 10" so the game calls them CAs. They won't stand up against a line of proper BCs, but a line of proper BCs won't stand up to a line of fast BBs, and a line of CLs won't stand up to a line of CAs, etc. They have their place in the hierarchy.
Toward the end of the game CAs make a real comeback as "the largest ship you should probably build that doesn't have a flight deck".

              Anonymous

A line of proper BC will outrun a line of BBs, even fast ones, if needed. Beyond a certain speed, the game forces you to reclassify BBs as BCs. The speed limit grows with time, but never goes away. It's 1957 in my game and it's still in effect, albeit at 30 knots.
I know, the AI seems to love CAs. But in the missile age, I think it's better to have more ships rather than bigger ships.

You can't, I think the AI doesn't operate off reports but just has universal vision wherever it has assets including planes and it will always ready strikes on minute 0 of the battle. You'll never beat that, so you need to use max cap and keep your forces close together until the enemy planes are all shot down.

Means it recalculates what ships and conditions will be in the battle. So if you get something like convoy attack, and you only get 2 cruisers to their entire fleet, if you regenerate the battle on loading the autosave you might have your full battle squadron Vs them instead, or vice versa.

Mission remains the same, ships, weather and time of day etc all get regenerated. I'll admit to using it to counteract some of the utterly moronic lopsided engagements the game throws at you.

remember to fire all your sams at them too. the ai in this game almost never use them but half a dozen non-penetrating hits are still enough to burn out even BBs. just gotta hightail out of there when youre done however, no reason to frick with enemy planes when your sam clipazine is almost empty.

Fought an absolute total war against italy for the past 3 years. they took dalmatia and had me blockaded for years, but I finally got a decent fleet composition in a cruiser action and had an absolutely decisive victory and they were plunged into revolution. I got Sardinia and Eritria in the peace as well as Dalmatia back. Life is good lads.

I really wish the "developed from" made a bit more sense, but so be it.

Only 20 more to go, or if you're in my game, you just polished off their BBs and have 20 BCs to go

It should be, click the file folder next to "developed from" and search through for the design name

How do yall organise your divisions? do u create one big one or a few ones for different seas

How do yall organise your divisions? I have the template 1BX for Flagging,1CA for Screening The BX and 2Cls for scouting and support. Do they matter that much or nah?

      Anonymous

The manual gives some suggestions for support/screen, I think CLs for screen and dds for support? It's mostly to prevent the RTW2 nonsense of mixing your new 28kn BBs with some old 22kn BBs in the same division. I just put my newest/fastest BBs into the flag division and set any BCs I have as scout flag. CLs get grouped by class, faster ones scout, the others screen.

What do you use CAs for then?

          Anonymous

After BCs come out? Raiding, I give them 8- 9 or 10 in guns, enough to handle most Raider encounters where they get intercepted. With oil firing, it's easy to get long range and push them fast enough to match ai BCs. If I'm playing AH or another poor nation, I'll use them in place of BCs for longer though, cheaper to build. It's sad, I like the heavy cruiser, but with the way the game gets battles, they don't have much place after 1910 or so. But we shouldn't forget that CAs were only so prolific in real life due to treaties preventing larger ships being built.

so as a general rule is it better to have a bunch of ~14in guns or fewer ~16in guns?

      Anonymous

Depends on so many things it's hard to set a rule, but I'd take 9 16in over 12 14in myself.

        Anonymous

I should mention that my 14 inch guns are quality 1 while my 16 inch guns are quality 0

I should mention that my 14 inch guns are quality 1 while my 16 inch guns are quality 0

quality-1 14 inchers should have the same pen capabilities as quality-0 15 inchers, however they have less range. So if you end up taking the 14in over the 16, make sure your ships have more speed than whatever they are going up against so you can close the range and force the engagement.

How does that work? a good gun gives you more force but not more range?

What are people's opinions on torpedo layouts? Are reloads worth it to save topside space? Or are more tubes worth it simply to dump more torps down at once?

Are oxygen fueled torps as big a danger as the game makes out? How long should you keep torpedo tubes on your larger ships? I've been finding use using submerged tubes into the 30s and 40s on my BBs as a finisher to save main gun ammo but I don't know if it's actually worth it.

      Anonymous

I don't know if reloads save any topside space, the main reason I use them is so after every torpedo in the fleet gets expended on a destroyer v destroyer skirmish, when I find the carriers later there will miraculously be torpedoes in the tubes again.
Submerged tubes are bad, stop using them as soon as your light forces start consistently firing torpedoes.
I've never seen oxygen torpedoes cause "extra" damage but destroyers are sunk as soon as they get hit so it probably doesn't matter.

        Anonymous

They like double the range too, irrc.

          Anonymous

I mean extra damage when hit.
The whole point is to increase range and speed of the torpedo at the cost of being more dangerous to carry.

        Anonymous

Why are submerged torps such a bad thing? As far as I can tell they're more weight efficient on capital ships than sneaking any deck torps aboard.

Torp reloads only (almost) double the weight of the torp system, but no topside load. My main concern was did reloads and oxygen turn destroyers from a 3-4 hit dead ship into a 1 hit dead ship.

What's an opinion on cruisers with a heavy torp load? Actually, what is the rule of thumb for a heavy torp load? I like have 3-4 banks of 4 on my destroyers and anywhere between 4-8 banks on my cruisers, assuming I'm at a tech level where I can do that without flipping them. But I think that might just be because I like playing underdogs that rely on night swarm tactics.

          Anonymous

Ntayrt, I believe the "submerged flat" hit you can get is pretty bad, plus they seemingly don't fire the submerged tubes often, so the weight can go elsewhere

          Anonymous

Submerged have a maximum speed beyond which they get an accuracy penalty and it's a low speed like 26 knots so by the time you're think that submerged tubes are the answer to all your problems they're just a waste of tonnage.

So how does one convert a ship into a carrier? I don't understand what I am supposed to do to do it.

      Anonymous

When you go to Rebuild a ship, there's an Auto Convert ship to Carrier button in the Graphics section of the ship designer that makes the whole process much easier, hit it, it'll ask you to confirm, it'll then redraw everything, scrub all the turrets for more appropriate ones and load up the ship with planes.

Win as many wars as you can (savescum if they end too quickly), don't select possessions and you get reparations that will boost your economy. It's possible to match the US's budget by 1920s/30s if you win enough wars
If you're building your ships correctly (use foreign-built ships with a country that has high tech and low tension) you should be able to beat pretty much anyone besides britain and the US

Is the economy system still the same, where the USA gets an extra 1% resource growth tick every year and the UK gets rubberbanded to keep up with the US?

          Anonymous

          Yes.

          Anonymous

I think so, but I also think the UK eventually deliberately falls off? I'm not sure exactly when or why but they both can get unrest from high naval expenditures and eventually do start releasing their colonies (India in particular)
I think the US does unequivocally overtake them eventually.

            Anonymous

Countries get unrest for having a high percentage of total national economy going to the navy. The UK gets hit hard by this in the 30s when the US has completely surpassed then as an economy but the UK is trying to match naval expenditure, suddenly the UK has high unrest and the budget gets dumped. And never recovers.

only having enough money to work on one or two capital ships at once makes having an 8-8 or even a 4-4 fleet hard
it also means I can't replace my old capital ships unlses I am under treaty
