I don't think it's that they were prohibiting Sega, so much as they're willing, but they want some stupid rate to license it out, and likely want a cut of each copy of the game sold. At this point, it's not even heavily rumored MJ's team was involved.

How does that make sense? The article is garbage and doesn't specify methodology and I can't find the original "study". It said they presented people with a list of 6 famous composers. What was the question? Recognize any of these names? Cause that's fricking dumb.

It would make more sense to play music and ask them to identify who composed it, which is probably what they did.

This has been known for decades. Jackson composed some of the music for Sonic 3 but the game was supposed to release just after he was first accused of molesting kids. Sega didn't want his name attached to what was ostensibly a kid's game but they have enough time to compose new music so they brought in some nobody to remix his tracks and credited the nobody composer. The problem was that the remixed tracks weren't distinct enough to be considered "new" songs legally so Jackson filed suit.

It's been stuck in licensing hell ever since and it's why Sega wouldn't allow Christian Whitehead to release his version of Sonic 3 on mobile and replaced the entire Sonic 3 soundtrack for the rerelease last year.

There's a reason why Sonic & Knuckles was on Steam for a very long time before Origins came out and it's because it released in a time before Michael Jackson's death had fully shifted the Jackson Estate's new rules into full motion. With the shift, there was never a new 3&K release again besides a horrifically bad AtGames machine that honestly was questionably legal, until Origins finally had them relent at the cost of Sega taking over for sound and music duty and skullfricking it hard.
