it's actually a pretty good strategy game
I haven't played it, but if its main competition is Nobunaga's Ambition then the bar isn't very high to begin with.
there aren't any games out there like SR except for games that are direct clones of it (Eiyuu Senki, sengoku gensokyo). The only similarity rance has to nobunaga's ambition is the overall theme of conquering japan.

Honestly I don't' think it really counts as a strategy game. It is more of a VN or a puzzle at best. None of teh other factions play by the same rules, the game is extremely tightly scripted with a very linear progression where most of the challenge is guessing what the right order of actions is and you pretty much have to metagame it by knowing what happens next.
It's a strategy game, except everyone metagames because its so old and can be REALLY HARD. It's still one of the best of its style in how the troops work and the different ways they interact along with the story.
It is a legitimate, fun strategy game that is worth probably ~$5.
However it has fundamental flaws and is ultimately not deep enough to really justify playing.

I'd say it has a similar quality to an online strategy flash game like Feudalism 2. It's fine and enjoyable, but it is not worth playing if you don't enjoy the lewd.

The lewd and setting is reasonably flushed out. I think the core gameplay mechanics do the Sengoku period better than other games that have tried to. There is a good mix of offense/defense to your actions as well as economy with many ways to make it work along with items/troops where you might want to capture certain commanders in combat and then on the high difficulties finding ways to cheese through and survive.
There's competition but you need to know moon. Daibanchou is translated and is the better game in terms of gameplay and Rai7 can be played with a translation guide open on your second monitor.
There's MTLs out there, the engine is not friendly to anything else. The chinks have modded it to hell and back over the years and some megamods are MTL'd and others are not.

They most definitely do not play by the same rules in the default story mode. In sandbox mode, maybe. But sandbox mode is fricking awful anyway.

They mostly do. They have 2 action fans, and they spend them on various things like recruiting, attacking and so on. Some of them get to do free attacks, but they also can't get more than 2 fans while the player can so it's pretty evened out. They also recruit characters from the ronin pool rather than from prison since AIs don't have prisons. That's the main difference. It doesn't seem like it outside of FFA mode because there's so many events that override what a natural turn looks like, but in the absence of a scripted event they play the same as they do in FFA.

It's a hentai VN with light ERP and strategy elements. It presents itself as a strategy game, but the actual strategy elements are very minor and it absolutely cannot stand on its own as a strategy game. That's not saying it's a bad game, in fact it's got very good gameplay for a hentai VN and the writing is pretty funny at times. But the big sidenote there is that "good gameplay for a hentai VN" is a ridiculously low bar to clear. It's like saying you're an Olympic-level sprinter when you're only competing against a bunch of blind cripples.

Such a low bar. Coomertrash + strategy game is such a bad combo because you ended up getting a half-assed coomertrash and a half-assed strategy game.
strategy is a but word, fore sure it's more game than vn. But honestly the gameplay is basically your typical turn jrpg (but instead of losing hp you lose troops in a specific unit )
It's good strategy game(you can skip all vn parts after few runs and still have fun with it) but same as absolutely every game in existence after you find out how to cheese it all fun is lost

I wish weebs would play more strategy games because they really don't any better. SR is a movie with generic turn based battle slapped on it as an excuse to be called a vidya. If you're in it for the gameplay, I'd suggest to look elsewhere.
