I really liked how fricking clowny the MP was in the first one. Animation cancelling the rolling between cover would let you hit absurd speeds and turned the game into chainsaw tag. The discount space mariene dude bro squad always sat well with me for how absurd it was.

It was first to get the cover system right and then literally every TPS followed, so it's another case of Seinfeld Isn't Funny for zoomers. When it released it was wild and new just how smooth the chest-high wall hugging felt.
Coop felt great to play and horde mode was a fun addition in 2, also a new thing back then.
MP was of the best kind, before the era of designed competetive experiences so the skilled play was all about abuse of mechanics in ways that turned it into basically a different game, as

Also, the graphics and gore in particular were breakthrough, this was the last console gen with a big jump from the previous one and Gears was the first real system-seller of that gen.
