Just use the ton of exp books you have, in this game you can’t pretty much make any demon useable to OP
Because he hits ridiculously hard. His second phase has a heavy AOE physical magatsuhi attack which you can't just dampner and he will use that move even outside magatsuhi. Gets shut down pretty easily by sleep and Vengeance introduce even more powerful ice combos to kill him quickly, but if you give him an inch he can and will wipe your party.
original game had way less exp, way less money. and penalty for level difference. so you came to hydra, made all quests, and was like, lvl 11-12, with no mass heal, with some ice spells, and not much mana. your damage was very low, even if all characters had ice spells, so all your mana ended pretty fast, and you had to grind for hours to get like 14-15levels just to get rid of damage penalty. besides, no yoko companion.
i played this on hard in original, and now on vengeance.
I've never grinded for Hydra in the original or Vengeance. He's easier on Vengeance because Mermaid and Nyami Nyami feed off each with their special skills to deal mega damage.

But that's a high enough level to beat Hydra if you're good at building teams, plus Angel and Mermaid unlock almost exactly at that level which gives you both the things you said weren't really there.
My fight was easy too. My demons had ice attacks, and my Nahobino is a magic user. I lowered the attack of the hydra and buffed the defenses of my demons, who are weak to fire. In the first phase, the hydra charges up and only uses the AOE poison attack. I nullified with an item. At the second face, I silenced him so he couldn't spam the AOE fire attack.
Quick question: Did the Fusion Accident rate get buffed or am I forced to wait for the one Miracle that's effectively a lagswitch like in Strange Journey?
If you really want to make use of pandemonic feast, you would use it alongside the dance magatsuhi skill to guarantee all multihit skills hit their maximum possible attacks.

If this is your first time and/or you only have time for one playthrough, play Vengeance/take her hand. If you're one of those players that is anally need to get that super boss in Vengeance path, don't take her hand and do true Neutral I think then play Veng. I would just recommend just playing Veng first anyways

Man, whenever I talk about this series, I've always said "Demons aren't Pokemon. They're not your friends. Exploit them and throw them away when they aren't useful anymore." But Demon Haunts have made me like demons I used to never give a shit about way more than most Pokemon.

I managed to poison Nuwa with the new half snake-woman demon and also had Rakshasa, both with poison follow-up attacks which dealt like 170 damage to her.

Fallen+Jirae and Snake+Brute seem to work. I'm looking at my reverse compendium fusion list, and Halphas + Kodama or Nozuchi + Daemon look like the easiest combinations.

matador's butthole tearing abilities are a lot higher here than in nocturne imo. a biit less predictable so he can andalucia out of nowhere and can melt 1-2 demons even with double tarunda, and the son of a b***h doesn't miss with double agility debuffs on him it feels like. fun fight honestly, really enjoying the spike in difficulty from his fight

Why does the fusion of Ranga and Barong result in Shiva?
Both gods originate from the island of Bali and since they are rivals, their personalities are polar opposites. Ranga is dark, Barong is light so obtaining Shiva (the god of destruction and creation) from their fusion is valid.
Man, I hate the Satan situation. Kaneko's Satan is one of the most iconic designs in the series and it sucks that it looks like Doi's is replacing it. But I don't dislike Doi's Satan either- I just don't like it AS much. I've been saying since IVA released that my ideal solution would be to keep Doi's Satan design as a separate demon named Mammon and include it as well as Kaneko's Satan going forward, but it looks like that ship sailed.

Shiva is the principle of conflict/destruction in the Hindu Trinity. Baring & Rangda represents the war between good & evil, which is what Shiva presides over.
Started the series with Persona 3 fes on ps2. Played P4, Devil Summoner 2 raidou vs abaddon, Nocturne, Persona 5, SMT4 and SMT5 in that order. I may be forgetting some entries.
So far it's a good 7/10, much better than the original release on switch which was a 5/10 at best.

I've played 1, 2, Nocturne, IV and IV:A, with a little bit of Raidou 1. Very good game. I've beaten the original V too and this is a far better experience thanks to the level scaling nerf. I haven't used the other Magatsuhi skills yet and most changes are minor but they work to make the game (mostly) better. Third area is better than Chiyoda was but I'm in Shakan and I hate the fricking Nue spam, at least there's Estoma but I don't like using it, still probably better than the castle
Started with SMT1. V is my favorite of the non first person dungeon crawler SMT games, and it's just frankly a lot of fun to play. Things like the story and atmosphere on top of just loving first person dungeon crawling make those older games edge out on top for me, but V really is fantastic. Having the game run at 60 FPS with much nicer visuals on my Steam Deck has been a treat.
The GBA version had from my experience, an overall lower encounter rate than on SFC. I honestly don't mind the encounter rate because most fights are over in a flash. I really do wish Atlus would give the first two SMT games some official love on PC, same with Megami Tensei I and II. Hell, I wish the G-Mode ports of those mobile Last Bible and Majin Tensei games on Steam had translations. Official or fan made, I'd buy them if they did.

Is knowing she is Ammy something based on knoeledge of the previous games and/or their lore, or is it explicitly stated in the game? I've only played SMT3-5 and SJ, and I don't recall anything about her being Ammy in base 5. Did I miss something?
They confirmed it in the new game. She is Amaterasu's knowledge who became so powerful she turned into Amaterasu herself to the point where the demon half was killed and forced out of V's world.
There's a Miracle that offers a small regen every turn if your Magatsuhi bar's full. Life Drain and Spirit Drain can help keep you topped off. Life/Mana Aid helps you heal a little after battles. Restore heals a flat 10MP if you hit a weakness or land a crit.
Aside from farming relics, you can earn Macca by robbing demons after you learn a certain Miracle. Ask them for cash, and keep asking them.
Wasn't there a way in vanilla V you could use Mitama's to fuse into your demons for extra stats, even more so if you had them inflated with stats, or am I remembering wrong?

You need to purchase Miracles to be able to use all the skills available in an Essence. Gives you a reason to go back for some old ones.
Aogami essences respawn after a certain amount of time. I'm not sure how long, but it's probably based on moon cycles. They seem to respawn fairly quickly. In the base game, they didn't respawn at all.
She's Amaterasu's knowledge and you're Susano-o knowledge. Yuzuru by the same extension is your brother which is why you're upset he got killed too, not just Koshimizu.
No it isn't. The big 3 never have incest. Susano-o's whole deal is that he's always enshired with his wife Kushinada. In fact many if not all the major love shrines in Japan are Susano-o and Kushinada shrines. You pray to them for a good marriage. Amaterasu and Susano-o never frick. Neither do Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. Any wikis that claim that are confusing it with greek and other east asian mythological stories about the sun and the moon. The truth is Tsukuyomi does absolutely nothing in his own myth.

The fact you unironically think all of Japan thinks the apology Susano-o makes to his sister is a sexual metaphor is honestly laughable. Is it an interpretation that exists? Of course. Is it so common it is considered fact? Absolutely not. Tell me what shrines adhere to this philosophy? How people actually respect and pray to their gods is more important than even the Nihon shoki interpretations because practice means more than conjecture. There are no shrines that revere Amaterasu and Susano-o as a couple. There are no shrines that practice ceremonies in adherence to this. Did you know it's also a common theory that Susano-o and the Orochi are the same deity? Is SMTV trying to push that theory though? You also have to look at this from the lense of how the game interprets myth. Though the history of SMT Amaterasu, Susano-o, and Tsukuyomi have always been siblings without a literal shred of sexual innuendo between them. SMTV does nothing different.

You have to realize that with the language barrier and massive among of literature that exists, if you want to do research on shintoism you either have to go to the direct source and do hours of research or go to the next best thing. I've been using that Japanese corps for years to look up things in smt I was curious about. Unless it's something like an interview where the devs make a direct reference to something else they cited, if you want to learn shintoism it's a great jumping off point.

They actually nerfed Idun. Golden Apple was changed from Medium to Small healing and her Innate Skill passive is the same Pixie gets while Sakuya gets a way better one.
90% of the time being good is Law, being bad is Chaos, even when it usually would contradict the game's law/chaos route (like sparing people from Tokyo and even some demons gives you law points in SMTIV). We don't have chart for VV, but for standard V, for example, when Sahori is captured by Lahmu and you can either prioritize attacking Lahmu or saving Sahori, attacking is Chaos, saving is Law. Killing King Frost at the end of his quest gives you chaos point, while letting him go is law. The one exception is the Khonsu quest, but even that one is odd. Killing him in the first battle gives you law points (probably because the angels sent you to kill him specifically). But then later in the quest chain, sparing him in the 2nd battle gives you law points while attempting to kill him now is Chaos, which is the usual norm for the alignment points.
I think it's a fair nerf and as a luck build it doesn't really effect me since I'm already doing it

It feels easier to me as well, but it's really hard to tell because we don't have actual information and there's already a baseline of knowledge giving use an edge. Some anons will say stuff like "all demons have unique passives and level scaling is gone, so obviously you're stronger and they're weaker" as evidence, but that might not actually be a huge change when paired with other balance changes or things like under the hood stuff they don't advertise.
For example if you go in a Digimon thread and ask them about the balance of Cyber Sleuth you'll probably get responses claiming Piercing skills are the be all and end all, but in reality they were significantly nerfed like 20-30% damage in the rerelease while everything else was buffed. Now only really specific Pierce skills are notably good.

buff and desbuff stay the same as in persona(although you only stack here by x2),like in persona you have to hit weakness from the enemies and protect yours,the smt are more abut surviving the battle while dealing damage and crafting partys for specific bosses

sometimes demon npcs will give you information about the bosses,but most of the time you get to the boss,you fight him and figure out his moven set(weakness,special attack,element attacks,etc) and you craft a party to counter that boss.also remenber to use item

i would say that for the first are the game give you the demons that you would need for the first bosses,so you can get used to the crafting demon shit,you also have the compendium but is kinda expensive early on
Yeah, your first SMT will always be a ballcrusher which is why the series has the reputation it does. Once you understand the mechanics you'll have no problem jumping right into Hard for the rest (except Nocturne because Nocturne Hard is gigacancer)
Normal, but if you want to switch to Easy for some fights go ahead because there's some really tough ones in this game and that's coming from someone with experience. Just try to stay on Normal. You can switch them at any time I believe

Status ailment curing items should always work even if you've got an ailment. You could have cured Charm, targeted a weakness with a demon and then used a Dampener when beano's turn came again.

This ability is fricking insane early hard mode. In my first hard mode playthrough of vanilla V, the Oni, Eligor and Nuwa took a try or two, but this time they didn't even get to play the game. Pixie coin investment paying off.
He's usually my go-to as the third actually, either him or Aitvaras. Ippon Datara has Charge, Counter, Fang Beaker, Taunt and Beatdown. Naamah got shit on even with the buff stripping.

Only done with the desert, beat Nuwa today. Hard mode and limited game time slowing me down. A lot has changed already. No idea about the story, but the story was fine up until the third area. Honestly the whole game fell apart there. I'm hoping 5V fixes it.

Yes, there are items. Farm Mitamas you find or get the DLC for them. Demon Navigators also dig up items to boost them. Aitvaras allegedly picks up combat related ones frequently, but I don't have him as a navigator yet.

Demon Haunts and the many incenses and grimoires they give you throughout the game. Probably not optimal but I've been pumping Mermaid the whole game and her stats are holding up.

Yes. >Grimoires grant level ups to any demons below your level >Incenses grant stat ups >Sutras increase skill affinity >You can use Essence Fusion to transfer new skills >The Demon Haunt lets you spam gifts on demons, when they get enough they get new skills and improved stats/skill affinity
There's quite a few ways in V. Grimoires will give a demon a level and can be used up to Nahobino's level. Essences let you inherit skills without doing fusion autism. There are miracles that give a demon stats based on the stats of the demons used to fuse it, so you can fuse around to give a Cait Sith extra stats. Incenses are stat boosters, and sutras boost skill proficiency (but can never give a demon a new proficiency or improve negative ones). Demon status will give a demon a level and can go beyond the Nahobino's current level. If you're dead set on using a demon several levels past where it starts, you'll need a lot of grimoires since the exp requirements exponentially increase to put a soft cap on how strong a demon can naturally get.

Smt has a lot of dumb theories but I'm glad some of my bets from playing V originally came true in the rerelease. To me it means they did write a story with more depth than people gave it credit for.
They're for jumping up and down Race trees for fusion customisation autism basically, although I am not the guy to ask for an in-depth explanation about it. These are not the actual pairs and purely just to illustrate the premise, but basically fusing Aqua + LVL 22 Femme demon = level 12 Femme Demon. With the elements you can more easily gets the skills you want on demons.

That is just a data. That anon got that data after a fight in one of the earlier quest. You can get her at level 40 via fusion.
Because he hits ridiculously hard. His second phase has a heavy AOE physical magatsuhi attack which you can't just dampner and he will use that move even outside magatsuhi. Gets shut down pretty easily by sleep and Vengeance introduce even more powerful ice combos to kill him quickly, but if you give him an inch he can and will wipe your party.

original game had way less exp, way less money. and penalty for level difference. so you came to hydra, made all quests, and was like, lvl 11-12, with no mass heal, with some ice spells, and not much mana. your damage was very low, even if all characters had ice spells, so all your mana ended pretty fast, and you had to grind for hours to get like 14-15levels just to get rid of damage penalty. besides, no yoko companion.
i played this on hard in original, and now on vengeance.
I've never grinded for Hydra in the original or Vengeance. He's easier on Vengeance because Mermaid and Nyami Nyami feed off each with their special skills to deal mega damage.
i haven't even used Mermaid in Vengeance, come on.

But that's a high enough level to beat Hydra if you're good at building teams, plus Angel and Mermaid unlock almost exactly at that level which gives you both the things you said weren't really there.
My fight was easy too. My demons had ice attacks, and my Nahobino is a magic user. I lowered the attack of the hydra and buffed the defenses of my demons, who are weak to fire. In the first phase, the hydra charges up and only uses the AOE poison attack. I nullified with an item. At the second face, I silenced him so he couldn't spam the AOE fire attack.
Giving you a free Tarunda in Yoko for lazygays also helps.

its per race, though with vengeance a bunch of demons get duo skills if you have them in party/stock. for example if you have black frost king frost and jack frost you get a unique magatsuhi skill with them

Technically it was advertised as all demons having unique skills, but there ARE repeats. A bunch of demons have the help in conversation skill like Pixie's. There are 3 cat demons with an unique skill where their damage is increased if you have others with the same skill active in your party... But generally they are unique, The repeats are the exception.
Most of them are unique. The non-unique skills usually have some reason to not be unique, like the 4 riders all have the same skill which transfers their buffs when you swap a rider in from your stock to replace another rider.

go vengeance, they're both parallel stories, you're not missing anything by doing one or the other. vengeance is the one with more budget.
If this is your first time and/or you only have time for one playthrough, play Vengeance/take her hand. If you're one of those players that is anally need to get that super boss in Vengeance path, don't take her hand and do true Neutral I think then play Veng. I would just recommend just playing Veng first anyways

Runs great! PC port and emulator wise, however both suffer from shader compilation stutter (switch suffers way more than PC) the PC version can brute force it with 60fps but not so much when trying to output anything above 90FPS

Fallen+Jirae and Snake+Brute seem to work. I'm looking at my reverse compendium fusion list, and Halphas + Kodama or Nozuchi + Daemon look like the easiest combinations.

Man, I hate the Satan situation. Kaneko's Satan is one of the most iconic designs in the series and it sucks that it looks like Doi's is replacing it. Started the series with Persona 3 fes on ps2. Played P4, Devil Summoner 2 raidou vs abaddon, Nocturne, Persona 5, SMT4 and SMT5 in that order. I may be forgetting some entries.
So far it's a good 7/10, much better than the original release on switch which was a 5/10 at best.

I've played a reasonable amount of SMT games, and a lot of JRPGs in general. I give it a 9, and I love most of what it does mechanically.
I think it’s pretty good so far
I've played 1, 2, Nocturne, IV and IV:A, with a little bit of Raidou 1. Very good game. I've beaten the original V too and this is a far better experience thanks to the level scaling nerf. I haven't used the other Magatsuhi skills yet and most changes are minor but they work to make the game (mostly) better. Third area is better than Chiyoda was but I'm in Shakan and I hate the fricking Nue spam, at least there's Estoma but I don't like using it, still probably better than the castle
Started with SMT1. V is my favorite of the non first person dungeon crawler SMT games, and it's just frankly a lot of fun to play. Things like the story and atmosphere on top of just loving first person dungeon crawling make those older games edge out on top for me, but V really is fantastic. Having the game run at 60 FPS with much nicer visuals on my Steam Deck has been a treat.
When are they going to rerererelease SMT 1 on Steam with reduce encounter rate?
The GBA version had from my experience, an overall lower encounter rate than on SFC. I honestly don't mind the encounter rate because most fights are over in a flash. I really do wish Atlus would give the first two SMT games some official love on PC, same with Megami Tensei I and II. Hell, I wish the G-Mode ports of those mobile Last Bible and Majin Tensei games on Steam had translations. Official or fan made, I'd buy them if they did.

They confirmed it in the new game. She is Amaterasu's knowledge who became so powerful she turned into Amaterasu herself to the point where the demon half was killed and forced out of V's world.

There's a Miracle that offers a small regen every turn if your Magatsuhi bar's full. Life Drain and Spirit Drain can help keep you topped off. Life/Mana Aid helps you heal a little after battles. Restore heals a flat 10MP if you hit a weakness or land a crit.
Aside from farming relics, you can earn Macca by robbing demons after you learn a certain Miracle. Ask them for cash, and keep asking them.
Never give demons macca if they ask, even if it's a little. Shit adds up.

miracle upgrades let you choose between more skills on essences; aogami essences respawn after a little bit, look for the red marker to reappear
You need to purchase Miracles to be able to use all the skills available in an Essence. Gives you a reason to go back for some old ones.
Aogami essences respawn after a certain amount of time. I'm not sure how long, but it's probably based on moon cycles. They seem to respawn fairly quickly. In the base game, they didn't respawn at all.
They respawn the same time vending machines do.
Wonder if Jack-o'-Lantern's passive works on them, then. Not that I see the benefit of spawning them so often. You either want Aramasa or you don't.

Anon, you can always summon default demons for their default prices. It saves the custom ones separately and only ever overwrites the custom slot.
PSA: make sure you check back in Tokyo every once in a while. The quest to unlock Turbo Granny appears there once the second area is open, and there may be more beyond that.

There's a Nozuchi that gives you a quest in the first area. Finishing that unlocks it.

hydra is prone to marin karins. I used a single marin karin on him and he was stunned for the entire battle. didn't take a single point of damage.
Pretty sure he actually resists Marin Karin, so you got lucky with the application.
Sometimes a Hail Mary like that is what you need. I got a lucky Seal off during the first fight with Naamah that really saved my ass.
I have genuinely no clue which dialogue options are law or chaos aligned.
90% of the time being good is Law, being bad is Chaos, even when it usually would contradict the game's law/chaos route (like sparing people from Tokyo and even some demons gives you law points in SMTIV). We don't have chart for VV, but for standard V, for example, when Sahori is captured by Lahmu and you can either prioritize attacking Lahmu or saving Sahori, attacking is Chaos, saving is Law. Killing King Frost at the end of his quest gives you chaos point, while letting him go is law. The one exception is the Khonsu quest, but even that one is odd. Killing him in the first battle gives you law points (probably because the angels sent you to kill him specifically). But then later in the quest chain, sparing him in the 2nd battle gives you law points while attempting to kill him now is Chaos, which is the usual norm for the alignment points.

It feels easier to me as well, but it's really hard to tell because we don't have actual information and there's already a baseline of knowledge giving use an edge. Some anons will say stuff like "all demons have unique passives and level scaling is gone, so obviously you're stronger and they're weaker" as evidence, but that might not actually be a huge change when paired with other balance changes or things like under the hood stuff they don't advertise.
For example if you go in a Digimon thread and ask them about the balance of Cyber Sleuth you'll probably get responses claiming Piercing skills are the be all and end all, but in reality they were significantly nerfed like 20-30% damage in the rerelease while everything else was buffed. Now only really specific Pierce skills are notably good.

Generally, yeah, because you'd already know how to best build your teams. If you never played a SMT before you'll take a while to get hang of all skills and builds.

Any tips on how to handle fusion and teambuilding in the beginning? I know by lategame you're just supposed to stack every broken passive you can + one actual damage ability.
sometimes demon npcs will give you information about the bosses,but most of the time you get to the boss,you fight him and figure out his moven set(weakness,special attack,element attacks,etc) and you craft a party to counter that boss.also remenber to use item
Are you just going to have to grind your party and go hunt down the right fusion materials each time or can you eventually use the compendium for shortcuts pretty freely despite the summon costs?
i would say that for the first are the game give you the demons that you would need for the first bosses,so you can get used to the crafting demon shit,you also have the compendium but is kinda expensive early on
Yeah, your first SMT will always be a ballcrusher which is why the series has the reputation it does. Once you understand the mechanics you'll have no problem jumping right into Hard for the rest (except Nocturne because Nocturne Hard is gigacancer)
Normal, but if you want to switch to Easy for some fights go ahead because there's some really tough ones in this game and that's coming from someone with experience. Just try to stay on Normal. You can switch them at any time I believe

It's really handy once you get to the more cramped areas. Area 3 was a fricking nightmare to traverse in the original game until you memorized it.
I like it, reminds me of Xenoblade X having a similar feature except you tilt the camera once it hits an apex in height instead of panning.

Doing Glasya + Naamah battle at the moment, missed just once then got charmed and wasn't able to use Force Dampener TWICE due to Charm (despite having Vouvre's passive) and Glasya basically just used the force ult. 3 times in a row does removing any chance I had of winning.
Just don't really know what I could have done otherwise other than >RNG

Status ailment curing items should always work even if you've got an ailment. You could have cured Charm, targeted a weakness with a demon and then used a Dampener when beano's turn came again.
But yes, almost every game has a luck element.

This ability is fricking insane early hard mode. In my first hard mode playthrough of vanilla V, the Oni, Eligor and Nuwa took a try or two, but this time they didn't even get to play the game. Pixie coin investment paying off.
I found that skill too late to feel like structuring my party around it but I bet Ippon Datara with the two fairies is a really strong setup
He's usually my go-to as the third actually, either him or Aitvaras. Ippon Datara has Charge, Counter, Fang Beaker, Taunt and Beatdown. Naamah got shit on even with the buff stripping.

Only done with the desert, beat Nuwa today. Hard mode and limited game time slowing me down. A lot has changed already. No idea about the story, but the story was fine up until the third area. Honestly the whole game fell apart there. I'm hoping 5V fixes it.
Yes, there are items. Farm Mitamas you find or get the DLC for them. Demon Navigators also dig up items to boost them. Aitvaras allegedly picks up combat related ones frequently, but I don't have him as a navigator yet.
The stat boosters from excavation points are set and don't respawn. It doesn't matter what navigator you use.

Demon Haunts and the many incenses and grimoires they give you throughout the game. Probably not optimal but I've been pumping Mermaid the whole game and her stats are holding up.
is right too, the best way to get high stats on a low level demon is to do fusions, and I remember there being miracles for more stats on level up and that quickly makes any shitmon broken

Series newbie here - is there any way to make weaker demons stronger as you advance?
Like if I want to hold onto Cait Sith can I make Cait Sith strong enough to compete with higher tier demons or is the only way I'm gonna get stronger is to constantly fuse stronger shit
You can, but even with V's new stuff like Grimoires and Essences and leveling Skill Potentials, you still have to do reverse fusion chains and get bonus EXP on him from fusing higher level demons down to him if you want him to compete statwise without feeding him every item

Yes.

There's quite a few ways in V. Grimoires will give a demon a level and can be used up to Nahobino's level. Essences let you inherit skills without doing fusion autism. There are miracles that give a demon stats based on the stats of the demons used to fuse it, so you can fuse around to give a Cait Sith extra stats. Incenses are stat boosters, and sutras boost skill proficiency (but can never give a demon a new proficiency or improve negative ones). Demon status will give a demon a level and can go beyond the Nahobino's current level. If you're dead set on using a demon several levels past where it starts, you'll need a lot of grimoires since the exp requirements exponentially increase to put a soft cap on how strong a demon can naturally get.

They're for jumping up and down Race trees for fusion customisation autism basically, although I am not the guy to ask for an in-depth explanation about it. These are not the actual pairs and purely just to illustrate the premise, but basically fusing Aqua + LVL 22 Femme demon = level 12 Femme Demon. With the elements you can more easily gets the skills you want on demons.
