Should I be playing PlayStation 2 on the actual hardware or just emulate with PCSX2

I'd like anyone who has experience with this console to tell it to me straight - should I be playing on the actual hardware or can I just emulate with PCSX2?
The only display I have is my PC monitor (1920x1080) so I would have to convert it to HDMI somehow, I'm thinking a component cable to HDMI converter but I'm not sure.

I have a PS2 slim, basically it's ready to go except I don't have a display other than the monitor I use for my PC. Are there any good ways to convert it to HDMI?

pcsx2 has such horrendous input lag that i cannot tolerate it for anything more than a purely turn based RPG. there are games that i genuinely believed were inhumanly strict and unresponsive, until i played them on hardware.
i emulate every other system. it's just that this emulator is fricking awful

i completed god hand on pcsx2. granted i did it on normal, not on hard w/ kick me sign but still felt it was decently challenging. the input lag wont stop you from enjoying games.

I've had much better experiences using the actual hardware but I also have a CRT on hand a bunch of nostalgia for the console. I've heard that some of those HDMI converter cables can add some artifacting and lag but I've never used them myself. Might wanna get an upscaler or preorder one of those rad2x cables.

PS2 emulation is generally very poor. Get the slim and a Free McBoot card. I run the ISOs over the network and it's flawless.

For HDMI conversion get the cheapest retrotink. The mini is totally fine on s video.

The 2X-MINI? Seems decent enough. I'll look into it.

Unless you've got a good CRT to play it on I wouldn't bother with real hardware.

PCSX2 is jank but any PS2 game remotely worth playing is fully playable beginning to end on it, you'll just have to deal with adjusting some settings game to game, maybe downloading patches to remove the interlacing.

Oh and yeah the input lag can be bad in some games but not others, it varies for some reason.

Just get a PS3 fat to play your PS2, PS1 and [not retro] PS3 and PSP kinos, as well as whatever Retroarch runs if you're that much of a savage.

Just get an actual ps2. it was the best selling console ever so you can get one for like $50 or less pretty much anywhere. PS2 is literally the cheapest retro console.

PCSX2 is fine except I can't get it to run PS1 games. Some games don't run well on it though. MGS2 cinematic scenes run slow as shit for example even on high end PCs. Save states are super convenient though.

Other games like God of War run fine.

      Anonymous

why would you even be trying to get PS1 games running on a PS2 emulator when emulators for PS1 are so good?

  13. 3 years ago
    Anonymous

All the big name PS2 games have ports to other systems like Xbox and PC. For the rare exclusives you can just emulate (are you really gonna spend $980 for Rule of Rose lmao?). In summary: you don’t need to bother with original hardware unless you get a good CRT. If your monitor is all you have then just search for a games PC port on PCGamingWiki or emulate.

Is a fat PS2 really difficult to take apart and clean? I was thinking about opening up mine to clean it out. The disc drive and laser lens most of all. What do I need to watch out for the most? Not damaging the ribbon cables? Any tips on that?

      Anonymous

No, very easy if you know what to do. Just don't touch the shit around the disc area until you know wtf you are doing, watch a vid on it or something so you know exactly.

My original PS2 Slim (first model with the laptop style power adapter) no longer reads discs.

You may have to replace the laser, but first thing's first: try power cycling the device.

it simply depends on the game in question
pcsx2 has a compatibility list online, like most emulators do

Definitely hardware if you can. PCSX2 can run a lot of games playably if you have a decent CPU, but getting it running well can be finicky as frick.

What is the best overall modchip to get? I hear modbo 5.0 is the way to go, but the ones they are selling nowadays are clones.

I currently have a PS2 slim, but am considering get a phat PS2 just for the HDD. Is there any particular model I should be looking for, or will any phat PS2 work just fine? I suppose the DVD drive doesn't have to be functional anymore once you install the modchip?

      Anonymous

If you plan on just using the HDD, you don't need a modchip for anything. A modchip is only good for discs.

Wait what? But that would mean I'd have to frick aronud with some special disk everytime right? Can you elaborate?

          Anonymous

PS2 can boot directly from the HDD. It's called FreeHDBoot. There are "noobie package" images which have everything set up so you can just write it to the hard drive and be all set up.

            Anonymous

That's pretty awesome, thanks. I wanted to catch up on some PS1 and PS2 rpgs that I never got to play back in the day. I enjoy collecting and playing on original hardware, but since discs are unreliable / super expensive this would be a great solution.

              Anonymous

I would avoid against using a HDD for playing PS1 games. It uses an emulator called POPS and it isn't very good.
There are options for using burned discs to play PS1 games natively, modchip or not.

              Anonymous

Look up FreeMcBoot and FreeHDBoot. FreeMcBoot is a memory card exploit. As long as a MC with the exploit is connected, it's a hacked console. If you disconnect it, it's back to stock. FreeHDBoot is the HDD variant of that pretty much. FreeMcBoot boots a little faster. That is all.

You don't even need a modchip to play backup games. I have a PS2 slim as well and I'm able to play games over ethernet from my pc's hard drive instead of reading disks. You can play some games off of USB as well but the USB 1.0 bottleneck jacks up fmvs and load times. Check out Free McBoot and Open PS2 Loader.

the pcsx2 is great, works great on my computer and plays almost every game disc i have...but i do love my ps2

the problem is that pcsx2 is free (if you have any PC-compatible controller), while with a PS2 you need upscalers (or a fricking palm-sized CRT though I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to stare into one for more than ten minutes) and good cables, which is most definitely not free.
