no real reason to play the og, dx is pretty solid though
switch one has more buttons which is nice but it's not that bad with only two, just don't use your shield
The fact that people are really against the OG beats me. I can't stress this enough but the censorship in the DX version just renders the entire game unplayable to me. Wish there was a rom hack to restore the original version. On the other hand I find the colours to be distracting so I'm good.
ohhh nooo, the mermaid loses a necklass and not a bra, it's joever
Also the nude hippo
But I've played the official German language version and the stuff they say is very explicit and shocking for a Nintendo game. Im talking about the official translation. They removed it in the DX version.
Also when the German translator visited the Japanese team he hung out with the music composer and showed him German techno music which was popular in the 90s. So the Japanese composer wrote a techno song for the German translator and you get the song if you enter the name of the translator. They also removed that.
Are German translations more faithful than English lolcowlisations generally?
Yes and no. As a German I prefer the German translations but that's also because the German dude was a genius and massive troll. I think his father is Italian and his mother is French so he grew up speaking 3 languages as a mother language already. Of course he also learned English and I'm sure he picked up some Japanese.
Dude was responsible for everything.
Like Nintendo Europe opened their HQ in Germany. So he worked their help line but also created the Club Nintendo magazine which was the German version of Nintendo Power (don't know which was first) but they also did all the other different language versions there.
So there are Club Nintendo magazines in many different European countries while there is just one Nintendo Power in the USA. All those different language versions were based on the German original.
The German version also got some wacky comics and if I remember correctly those were drawn in Germany and it's crazy that this is officially approve Nintendo stuff.
Like you get an official Mario comic with Freddy Krueger and Jason from Friday the 13th. The 90s were just wild and Nintendo Germany / Europe didn't give a frick and wasn't uptight like Japan or the USA - especially the USA.
Now let's talk about the translations.
Dude did whatever the frick he felt like and it's hilarious.
Spray sleeping powder on enemy and they say
>never without a condom
Or
>give me your juice and I give you mine
He also added silly lines to other games like goblins that want to eat you (you are in a hot pot. Forgot the name of the game. SNES. Secret of evermore I think) and they say
>we've to go and watch (German version of east Enders)
I didn't know about this, very cool
Pretty sure that censorship always existed in the English language versions, DX or original. That anon seems to be talking about the German translation.
>The fact that people are really against the OG beats me.
Quite the opposite, usually. It's much more common for anons to shit on the DX version as being a "soulless rehash" or something, because they claim the original black and white graphics were somehow intrinsic to engineering the "dreamlike atmosphere" of the game, which is pretty moronic because I dunno about you but I dream in color. And in higher resolution than 160x144.
This, tbh. Always hilarious to me when people assume nobody ever wanted sharper image quality before the turn of the century.
The ONE thing I do retrospectively like about the ghosting/refresh issues on the original GB screen is when you're playing Pokemon, how you can't quite make out what wild Pokemon you're encountering until it finishes sliding across the screen. It was really exciting when you were seeing something for the first time, and it was just a hulking, blurry, unknowable mass. Kind of helped drive home the fact that they were dangerous wild creatures that you needed protection from, which is an angle the series has very much lost.
OG is the only version I've ever played.
I bought the "remake" but only played a little of the beginning. I plan on actually going through it soon.
always play the original first
Wow /vr/ is full of morons.
Go play the original version of Tomb Raider.
>Go play the original version of Tomb Raider
Was... was that supposed to be an insult or something? OG Tomb Raiders still hold up to this day and is lots of fun. And while the remake is fine, there's nothing moronic about playing the original in 2024. You should get better at making bait posts, anon
The original version of Tomb Raider is PAL Saturn
Chadurn wins again
moron, they started development on the DOS version first and it's identical besides looking and running far better
Ok will do, that game kicks ass. Even better with cheat codes, which the remake likely doesn’t have.
Looks like someone didn’t read the thready before posting… sic ‘em anons
DX version emulated with a monochrome shader.
Anyway, I recently played the remake and it's nice enough, I enjoyed it; it's remarkable how giving you a permanent sword, shield, power bracelet and pegasus boots may cut like a full hour of item menu switching for a given playthrough lmao
>spoiler
cruel
>DX version (emulated with a monochrome shader)
Then there are absolutely no pluses for playing the objectively worse version of this game.
The monochrome shader won't bring back the original tiles which are different
Even in monochrome the DX tiles won't blend seamlessly like the original
DX uses the original tiles in mono mode.
Well shit, you're right
right is lookin good
A faithful unclashing coloring hack of the original would forever put the DX atrocity to shame.
You people overstate way too much the tiles over the gameplay. DX is still the best version due to content and color alone.
>noooooooo my grass tile doesn't mesh as weeeell KUSOGEEE KUSOGEEEEEE FRICK NINTENDO
>you people
It’s literally one dude
It's a possibility I can't rule out due to the nature of Ganker.
There was a thread last year? That one anon went on a tirade and was btfo because DX plays as the original when played on an OG GB
>It’s literally one dude
You're on crack if you think there's only "one dude" indulging in "old thing good, new thing bad" rhetoric on /vr/ of all places. Anons have been tirading against the DX version as a "soulless remake" since before /vr/ even existed, for whatever reason they can find. I've even seen people call the added photo album
a cringey distraction that ruins the pacing of the game or some shit.
Yes, that's what I said, thanks.
In that whole paragraph you talked about things I didn’t say, good job
So you can't read. Good job.
>talk specifically about tiles being one dude
>talks about a whole host of other complaints that other people have had
I can read, but your autism doesn’t allow you to comprehend apparently
this. DX is best cuz colors. I like having color on videogame. All the rest is, not important, you play LA if you into monochrome a lot but thats it.
>muh grass tile
>muh popup...still happens but you press through 1 message vs 2 messages ree
Tone it with the racism
>may cut like a full hour of item menu switching for a given playthrough
And then autistics like myself will grind all the statues, maze pieces, and heart pieces at the game corner that was originally for just a yoshi doll. That adds up to more than an hour of time. Not saying you should do this, but it does add time to a 100% run.
source: some 30 year old with too much time.
Original.
Remake has tonal changes due to weird color choices and musical arrangements.
HD version on PC
https://archive.org/details/links-awakening-dx-hd
Albeit it's not on PC
This gave me a massive headache. Why the frick would someone play this, let alone make it?
this is very cool as a programming experiment but I don't think anyone, the creators included, would play it like this...
I played it to the end. It has some bugs and a lot of stuff doesn't quite work exactly the same (sword and jumping, some enemy behaviors etc). It's way above the sluggish cell phone game remake that somehow has trouble running on Switch.
I love the PC port because it made the game feel more like a diorama than even the official remake by Nintendo tried to.
original is the best version of any game.
DX with Shaderglass set to whatever crt suits your display/tastes the best.
You may as well make sure you wear jorts and drink fruitopia while you play, if the point is "enhancing" the experience with stupid retro shit completely unrelated to the game or the hardware it originally ran on.
you seethe in every thread. keep at it
I prefer Snapple.
ah yes, the gameboy with built in crt monitor.
The original, no question, in the original aspect ratio and green screen, as intended. The monochrome aesthetic is what makes the game so beautiful and unique, and it fits with the theme of the story and disassociation with the true world. Only tastelets prefer the version that looks like a five year old coloured it.
DX in Game Boy mode.
this may be the only game i’d prefer the original gameboy version of. simply because i remember playing and replaying it so many times that any visual change is like overwriting a core memory from childhood.
the pc port

DX with this patch
So right! Those beautiful colours are just like the pride flag! Now don't forget to include the gender-neutral hack that fixes the awful mistake of the npcs referring to Link as male, it takes so many of us out of the experience and even triggers dysphoria in some folx.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2881/
Who the frick said the play the patch in GBC mode? Go back, troony
*Still incorrectly assumed.*
The game refers to the character Link, because he is male, not the player.
Besides maybe a direct 4th wall break this is delusional.
how do people like you live? is it a hidden in plain sight situation where you constantly have to hide your powerlevel or do you openly rant about the trannies living in your walls. I'd love to see if someone said "ye I like LADX" in person and you just started ranting about the gays and how the GBC symbolized the pride flag and a gender neutral mod you just have ready to pull out of your ass
Original. Either on original hardware (DMG), or an emulator that can accurately reproduce the screen ghosting effect.
which emus do? I don't think sameboy lets you do that, despite the name
The emulator in the video is BGB, so there's at least one. It's one of the more accurate GB emulators out there. It even supports the contrast wheel, among other things (see https://bgb.bircd.org/reality/index.html ).
people back then wanted a screen that wouldn't have the terrible ghosting and green tint and looked like the screenshots on the back of the game box
I miss being a child, playing this game in the 90s…
DX but use GBC colour correction
Why do people ask this question on Ganker? You will never ever ever get a good answer. Ever.
Switch version
For the longest time I wondered why people always b***hed about the pop-up messages whenever you touched a rock. I only recently found out that the color version of the game doesn't allow you to skip those messages like the original.
I always found them annoying either way, tbh. Wasn't necessary in any Zelda game before, or after. As much as we like to glorify old games, they occasionally found novelty in treating the player like a modern zoom-zoom moron.
There’s a simple rom hack that prevents them from appearing again after the first time which is nice
The other thing is the annoying music change after powerups
>rom hack
I've been getting into flashcarts lately and I'm loving little romhacks like this. It's nice to finally just smooth out all these little wrinkles in games I've played a dozen times already.
>The other thing is the annoying music change after powerups
I wasn't bothered by this as a kid, but it is kinda lame. It'd be cool if they had used an actual, good song for the duration of the power up instead of that dumpy little loop.
It’s the fact that it interrupts every song with the same 4beat loop
Doesn't matter, you'll never really be able to experience it unless it's 1993 and you're 10 years old and you get Link's Awakening for Christmas.
I didn't grow up with LA but I personally like regular more than DX. I've never played the remake.
It’s a short game. Play all three in order of release.
I've only played the remake, it's good! From what I gather also less of a ballache than any other version as certain items get dedicated buttons instead of having to go into the menu and switch all the time. It can be a bit choppy though so if you're autistic about frame rates stick to the OG
which shader lets me get that yellow tint
