Should we all buy a PS3 Fat Frankenstein 40nm? Ever since I saw the documentary on why the PS3 got the YLOD, I've been wanting one just to have one even though I won't use it much. It just seems like it would be a solid console and something that's totally worth the money.

Honestly you should have a PS2 anyways since the PS3 can't output 240p which is needed for PS1 titles to not look like a blurry mess.
That's assuming you care about original hardware.

It upscales the games. It's not blurry at all. Way better looking than grinding some shit on ps1 via composhite

It does not upscale the game, it just outputs a higher resolution which makes it look like shit.
The best way to play PS1 games with original hardware is on a PS2 through component out.

I have a Super Slim white PS3 that's all beat up and ugly but it works flawlessly. I don't like the sliding disk door. One thing I don't like doing is having to reconnect HDMI cables to change consoles so I want to make a mini PC with all the old ROMS on it from Nintendo to Sony to Microsoft.

But this Frankenstein PS3 is so cool and seems like a solid buy because of the reliability and value. I might get one just to have one because I think there are people out there who really desire them.

I also thought about getting into console repair because I feel like I've played most games and I'm getting into turn-based JRPGs now because I've moved on from the past-paced games. I still like gaming, but I feel like doing other things in the gaming sphere, like working on consoles to repair and resell.

Console repair is a ton of fun, and a lot of the time you can find cheap 'untested' units that are actually flawless.
Had an N64 with an Expansion Pak recently I got for ~$30 after shipping/tax, and its only problem was a sticky reset button.
That's also how I got a perfectly functioning fat PS2 for about the same price.
I'd say get a regular or untested fat PS3 if you want one, and if it gives you the YLOD hit it with the Frankenstein mod.

Even the earliest PS2's emulate the Playstation GPU which results in ugly vertical line dithering shit in component.

          Isn't 480p 4:3 enough? That's what you get with a component cable.

            Anonymous

Component cables running PS1 games on a PS2 give you 240p with some very rare 480i depending on the game.
The PS3 digitally processes lower resolution signals to have them output anywhere from 480i-1080p.
If you're running off the HDMI you can't use 480i which means the PS3 will force deinterlacing for 480i games (some PS1/most PS2) which adds needless input latency.
240p content will always have some latency because it must be scaled up regardless of whether you're using A/V or HDMI.

The original PS3 Fat is a good looking console also. I was always loving how good it looked. It was also heavy, which made it feel like a solid brick that's not going to fail on you (which it did).

You're right. I'll take the emulation over the hardware issues of the early fat models, though.
It also runs pirated PS2 games, so there's that.

As nice as the PS2 chip is, it just felt too fragile overall especially for the price they go for these days

It's been determined that it was always caused by a bad GPU. That's why the earlier PS3s got so many YLOD and they improved the GPU over time in the newer models. That's why you can mod them to have the newer PS3 GPU chip so that it doesn't YLOD as fast

they're very expensive and ps3 emulation i'd say is good enough to not really need an actual ps3. there may be a game here and there that doesn't work well on rpsc3 though, and recently they had some regression on gran turismo which was annoying.

I'm one of those guys that wants to play on a console even if I can emulate it on my PC. I get tired of having to troubleshoot every little problem on PC with games. I still haven't even figured out how to get the Xbox Series X controller to work with Windows 10

  6. 2 weeks ago

No, buy a PS2 and a PS3 separately, it's cheaper and has fewer complications, you can also emulate it.

I'm a guy who hates having to press buttons on my TV or outside of the console to have to switch between things. I want one single console that can play everything on one single thing without having to switch between remotes, consoles, and controllers.

My main interest tends to be a mini-PC that can play every game up to PS3/Xbox 360 on one SSD.

just get a pc, install emudeck or set up playnite and boom, there you have it. leave it on to torrent or seed if you'd like. PS2 emulation has done strides, no clue about 360/PS3 but I heard PS3 is getting better. You'll need semi-decent specs though, that's the tricky part

Why would you suggest Emudeck, which is specifically made for the Deck? It's not even a separate launcher..

I have a PC, but I also want a console. I don't want a dead PC sitting in my corner playing emulated games by clicking to turn on every emulator. I want a console that can play every single game up to PS3/360. I think the Frankenstein is a good buy because if I make a mini PC that can play up to PS2/Xbox/Gamecube, I can get a Fat PS3 Frankenstein 40nm, and have literally just three consoles: the mini PC playing everything, a PS3 Fat playing PS3 games, and a PS5 playing PS4 and PS5 games.

It's the best setup in the current market for a minimalist. You pick all the best games for your mini PC and get those games for free through ROMs, and then you get a PS3 Fat for its looks and value when modded with 40nm, and then a PS5.

The whole thing comes together with three consoles without the need for PC clicking and troubleshooting.

The only real hang-up with this is Xbox emulation.
Xemu is not very mature, and has a ton of compatibility issues.
You'll also miss out on any 360 exclusives.
If you get the chance, I'd add an RGH 360 to the set-up like that other anon said. It'd make for a good project to get into 'console repair'. With a hacked back-compat whitelist, it can also play almost any original Xbox game you'd want.
I'm assuming you don't care to output to a CRT, either, but if you do want to you could add an old AMD card to the mini-PC and install CRTEmudriver on it to natively output to a CRT.

The minimal work, the most results. I don't know about 360 emulation on PC because I've never tried it, and there aren't enough Microsoft Bill Gates games to make me want to emulate a 360 because Master Chief Collection is on Series X. I think I'm going to make a mini PC and emulate with ROMs through to Xbox/PS2/Gamecube (which I know works), a PS3 Fat (or any PS3 Slim or my white Super Slim tbh but I like the Fat model) and a PS5. All these things together basically make the entirety of gaming, and then from there I could branch out and get an HDMI switcher and switch between these three on one input.

I go from the bottom up rather than from the top down.

You do you, all I'm saying is Xbox emulation is gonna be bad.
The most important bit for me when playing old games is the peripherals, though. Don't try and play N64 games with an Xbox controller for example.

Well, there aren't many Xbox games I want to play lol, so it doesn't matter. Lol if any. Xbox has zero games. None. Not one. Lol. I was thinking an 8BitDo controller for the mini PC

                Anonymous

It honestly seems like you want to have a set-up to play games more than you want to actually play games.
The 8bitdo controllers are fine, if a bit cheap feeling in the hand. The face buttons are too stiff for my liking, but it works well enough.
Some PS2 games will need you to use a DualShock 2/3 to take advantage of pressure sensitive buttons that other controllers don't have.
Genesis/Saturn games will be very awkward, especially those that make use of 6 button layouts.
I wouldn't bother trying to play N64 games with it, the experience will be miserable.
Some GameCube games may also feel odd without having the digital analog click of the original controllers.
Beyond that, it'll probably be fine.
Honestly, I'm not convinced minimalism is really an ideal to strive for if you intend to spend any serious amount of time playing a particular system.

Don't forgive Microsoft for their sins of making us always online and making us pay for used games

No, man. I like playing games. It's just that I want the industry to reach a certain standard where there are no more confusions. I consider all aspects. Emulation is a thing, and their doers steal games, yet it's the easiest access to games you can find, yet on a PC and having to click around, I do not like.

I have a very specific idea in mind where it is minimalist and considering of every option to put all of the games from 1985-2005 into one box, along with everything new, and from there, continue on, remixing if I have to.

A MiSTer gets pretty close to what you want, but it only supports up to PS1/N64 because it's using hardware emulation rather than software emulation.
I'm just not convinced having everything in one box is going to make any real difference. I personally hook a system up then I play and finish games for that system for a couple weeks/months. Then I move on to a different system.

        >My main interest tends to be a mini-PC that can play every game up to PS3/Xbox 360 on one SSD.
The 360 emulator lacks a lot of development and is complicated to use (although I have been able to play the entire Gear of War 2 and Fable 2), you need a GPU like a 2060 for it to work well, acquiring a 360 is not such a bad idea If you like the system, it would be ideal to install RGH but it already requires modifying the hardware, although you can get 360 games that are too cheap.

The PS3 emulator requires a lot of hardware, only the most recent CPUs are capable of emulating it quite well and some titles have their visual problems, something like a 12400F onwards or better a Ryzen 7700 that has AVX 512 that helps in the emulation and if you want to scale high resolutions you need a good GPU, you could make a PC with ITX format with a Ryzen 7600x and an RTX 4060 low profile, you could have a games station with many consoles and current PC games

Just remember: always hate Microsoft and their proponents.

Microsoft probably sends out goons to hate people like me because they see their demise in gaming soon, as the Windows device sees a future demise. They don't have any relevance. People will naturally switch to Linux or Mac for gaming especially and Windows is trying to stay relevant, and if Gaming switches over to Linux, Microsoft will shit themselves. Bill Gates will literally have a diarrhea shit in his house
