Since humans represent 'normalcy' is fantasy worlds to keep them grounded, wouldn't it make sense that humans wouldn't be able to use magic either and would rely solely on technology?

Are you saying that humans can't use magic in the real?

Incorrect. the world is run by black magicians

Depends on if magic is meant to be obscure and mystical or just a normal part of the world tbh.

Even if it's a normal part of the world the expansion of humanity can represent the dying off of the strange and mystical

In (one of) the settings I'm working on the fact they don't have magic is deviation from normalcy and there are implications for being non magical in a magical world that causes bizarre outcomes.

If your humans are a “normal” or “default” in your setting then you’ve failed to distinguish your other races as anything more than “human, but X” and thus you’ve failed at worldbuilding. We are always going to latch onto the human qualities of fantasy races, that’s unavoidable since we’re telling human stories, but if our modern ideas of “normal” have crept into your setting then you aren’t writing good fantasy.

Ironic you post an image of a woman driven entirely by an inferiority complex and desperation to be special and important.

        Thanks for noticing.

humans are and will always be seen as the "normal" or "default" because we are humans and we measure the qualities/capabilities of other races by comparing them to ourselves

I literally said that, and that your goal should be to write beyond the human condition. If you’re just writing a human story then the only thing fantasy is doing for you is aesthetics. Fantasy is capable;e of more than just setdressing.

    >humans are supposed to represent normalcy
To adhere any concept to a singular, universal standard across all works in a genre that revolves around doing whatever you desire is not only limiting, but is entirely moronic.

No, humans just have to use magic in ways we consider normal but others consider bewildering.

In my-verse, playing with Demon Lord rules humans are unable to use magic innately nor from the gods because they were created by a titan out of spite. So they lack the direct divine inheritance or love the other creator gods show their children. So their crutch is definitely technology but mostly Dark Magic.

Both of you are using different meanings of "technology" and "normal" and this will just be a pissing contest. Frick off.

No, they would use magic and technology in equal amounts with no clear preferences.
But it would still be better if you give humans some actual advantages and disadvantages like everyone else.

You can have both op, it's not mutually exclusive to have humanity generally grounded in reality conventions and still have due exceptions to the rule, those have just to be acknowledged as such.

No, humans have the most "normal" statistics, neither good nor bad.

Lots of HFY stories go for that. Humans meet elves or telepathic aliens etc, and for them "human magic" is our high technology.

in my own setting, while humans can use whatever magic, they are inclined towards enchantment since enchantment functions by bining metaphysical (magic) to physical and mundane (an object) and works best by having the magic further assert an object's 'core concepts/functions'. (So you can make israeliteelry that provides magic shields, but a chainmail enchanted with the same will always be much better)

I think that's kind of asinine. In my setting humans are the best/most powerful mages & it's what gives them the edge. They are also the most technologically advanced with the dwarves being a close second & elves being far behind, but physically outstanding
