The pacing is complete dogshit, the characters have 300 hours with you and feel less fleshed out than random JRPG party members from a 30 hour game, there is no overall plot or idea or message to the game beyond shoveling whatever random thing the devs want to at the players. This game is okay for an MMO and that is the nicest thing I can say about its story, its not even a top 3 FF game let alone a good one.

What's really the difference between FFXIV and WoW? I guess substats doing x2 damage compared to XIV (+30% damage instead of +15% for example), Versatility also making you take less damage compared to Determination, and XIV's Mastery stat being role-based (DH/Tenacity/Piety) instead of spec-based?
Even at a glance WoW has build diversity, there's choice in how to build your characters and that means at every stage of the game you could be doing something different to the next guy playing your class
There isn't a single point in FFXIV that you're anything but a carbon copy [class], the only distinction from one player to another is how well they can do the class rotation

This isn't true. There is a lot diversity in FFXIV. The different glams you can do blows all of the transmog in wow. It's true the jobs are the same and there really isn't a sub-class within those jobs. But, you can switch your jobs at anytime compared to switching between your alts. Also, in terms of crafting and gathering FFXIV does a better job in that department.

It's true that it comes with its own consequences, it becomes much harder to balance, and thus meta slaving becomes more of a thing, but that will be true for sweats in any game, it still doesn't make it untrue.
in terms of stats alone you have things like haste and crit making a WAY bigger difference in terms of output
then there's the fact that most specs in wow have some degree of stat interaction baked into their spells- procs that go off more frequently due to crit/mastery/etc, with Windwalker being the only historical exception to that (and suffering every expansion because of it)
and that's before we get to things like on-use trinkets giving you an extra cooldown or tier sets nudging you into certain playstyles
meanwhile in XIV we have, what? MNK and WAR stacking crit>DH while everyone else goes DH>crit
sure you can stick sksp, I guess, but even maxing out materia slots only drops your GCD from 2.5s to 2.35s

I wish the game just let you have ANY sort of freedom to just do what you want to do instead of feeling like such a chore at every turn. WoW combat/gameplay was designed to be quick, responsive and snappy right off the get go.
XIV was originally a FF11 copycat and with that way less responsive and slower. And when they tried to salvage that mess with ARR the problems didn't go away - the engine that XIV is using to this very day (some Luminous fork) just like Luminous was based on the original Crystal Tools. They just took and old stable build and tried to port everything to it while downsizing the whole mess at the same time to make it more stable.
To this day XIV is suffering from the mistakes of 1.0.

The only character you could argue is the most static is Y'shtola in terms of personal character growth but all the major scions have absolutely had growth as the game has gone on.

Thancred is the only character there who's had growth since HW. Lyse also is not a Scion anymore.
She was still a scion through the SB MSQ and did experience growth into a leadership role and despite personally thinking the SB MSQ was weak it's objectively an improvement over being Tomboy Punchgirl.
Lyse goes into SB a tomboy punchgirl and leaves it that way. Just because the other characters clap and say she changed doesn't mean she actually did. She learned nothing and didn't change in a single way. That's one of the many reasons SB's story is shit.
I'd like to counterpoint that by saying that a character's core personality doesn't suddenly change, yes she's still tomboy punchgirl but she at least realizes despite that that she should be a good figurehead for her countryman to rally around.

The twins have had the most growth of any characters in the entire game. They don't even resemble the way they used to be in ARR anymore because of how much they have been forced to grow. Hell, one of their most pivotal scenes in EW was them being punished for their naive attempts at altruism and their desperate attempts to finally do the right thing and see people as equals led to numerous innocents just willfully dying.
All of Alphinaud's development was in ARR and HW. And Alisaie has never had development since she returned to the group in HW. She just rambles over and over again about how she needs to be stronger so she can protect people and stop relying on (You). But she never does. She's been halted in her development from the moment it began, and all that changes is that each expansion introduces a new kid she fails to protect so she can come to the same resolution she came to the last time it happened.
Do people forget how changed Estinien is, how he lived for nothing but rage, sorrow and was hellbent on getting his revenge even if it meant his own death.
He's gone through a lot, and it took a long time for him to come to terms with the events of HW.
Alphinaud too was changed from ARR to now and Urianger and Thancred, Yshtola hasn't changed much and to me she's a pretty boring character but is the face of FF14 on promotional art so I doubt she's going anywhere.
They have absolutely changed, even Krile but they haven't changed in the exact ways those hobbits or the fellowship changed in Lotr and nor should they. The setting is completely different, although there are parallels in story telling and characters you can't really and shouldn't compare the two franchises.

I've just assumed by now that when people say shit like that they mean they just want the Scions to visibly unpleasant all the time, and that they dislike the game's overall message about how a better world can be built by working together. The Crystal Braves are going to haunt Alphinaud until the day he dies, but because he decided to learn from it and didn't lose his sense of hope instead of dissolving into a puddle of cynicism, it doesn't count as a bad thing that he went through apparently.
Well, you're wrong. What people want is to go into a stressful situation not already knowing that nothing will actually happen. It's hard to get invested in a story when they're trying to sell you on the possibility of a main character being in danger, but you already know ahead of time that if anything does happen it's going to be walked back in the very next cutscene, because that's what they've done for the past few expansions. It's hard to get invested into characters who don't change and won't face real trials or have to make hard choices, who don't find new goals or interests and who just join the Scion grubhub club when they've finished their one story arc.
When people say they want the Scions to go away, it's because they've been staring at characters like Alphinaud and Y'shtola who stand off to the side and only exist at this point to make quips and to be there for the sake of being there. If Alphinaud actually went off to help the Garlean government for an expansion or two and then came back with a new problem he needed help with, that would be interesting. If G'raha went off to Corvos and gained a vested interest in trying to reestablish its independence and eventually had to decide between helping them or helping us, that would be interesting. Instead they're just stuck standing there.

The scions never actually get hurt and there is no long term repurcussions they suffer for their actions. Everything that happens around them suffer long term. Lesser characters die to the same thing (Xenos cutting Y'shtola for example).
