    >story is serviceable at best
    >character building and customization is shallow
    >combat is barebones and quite awful
    >world is barren and the towns miniscule
    >no memorable characters of any kind
    >barely any room for actual roleplaying
    >quests are simplistic and boring
    >dungeons are linear and samey
    >same 3 voice actors for every character
    >bad AI
    >buggy as hell
    >also happens to be the greatest game ever made

It's true though, the roleplaying in Skyrim comes down to the fact that are you a guy with a sword or a guy who does magic, or both. You make no choices of any kind, that's why zoomzooms love it so much.

If the popularity of Many A True Nerd's video is any indication, people seem to think that
          >shall I kill this npc with a shotgun or a laser rifle
          is the definition of roleplaying.

            Anonymous

Added to that, Matn at least can't comprehend the idea of having a sub optimal build for the purpose of roleplay. Yes Charisma is a dump stat, but what if I want my guy to be charismatic but dumb in this playthrough?
            >b-b-but u wont get more xp wit dat
That's the type of person I'm talking about.

If it comes down to shooting an NPC or selecting a dialogue option with an NPC, at least the former feels like I'm immersing myself in the game dynamics instead of choosing one of several preordained options the writers have divined for me. Out of the game I've played, pretty much only Disco Elysium felt like it sufficiently systemized skill checks and character interactions.

              Anonymous

Even the shooting is a preordained option because the game has to account for it before development starts.

Good marketing, appealing to casuals and newcomers and I think the Vikings series was hitting its stride not long after Skyrim's release.

Frick it, taking the bait. Almost none of the game elements are as bad as critics would insist. Plenty are even remarkable. But often people misunderstand what Skyrim and what Bethesda games in general are trying to accomplish. They're not trying to audition the player for a role in their cinematic experience. They're not trying to design a tightly paced obstacle challenge.

They're trying to render a world and inviting the player to step inside. As much as possible, they want the player to do stuff because that's what they genuinely want to do not because it's the next part of the game. And they've mastered all these subtle techniques to entice the player off the beaten road and encourage exploration. It's part of what makes their open worlds feel so much denser than everyone else's.

        >It's part of what makes their open worlds feel so much denser than everyone else's.
In the same way a 1000 page Harry Potter novel is dense, through quantity rather than quality.
Bethesda's quests are incredibly simple. The South Park writers say a story should always have a "but" and "therefore" in it.
        >The Merc gets sent to kill a cave full of killer bandits, but he learns they're the natives who've been driven off by the corrupt baron, therefore he must choose who to aide with, but both the natives and the baron are unnecessarily brutal in their methods, therefore choosing one or the other isn't ideal, but maybe there's a third option therefore possible to stop anymore innocent people dying.
That's just a generic example. Skyrim's quests mostly boil down to the Merc killing the bandits. Or killing the bandits and retrieving a quest item. Or killing the bandits, retrieving the quest item and killing the quest giver because he attacks.

You're insisting the game operate narratively rather than emergently. Bethesda is focused on the setting more than the story.

The setting doesn't mean much unless you care about it. And no linearly climbable mountain or city on a bridge will make you connect to a setting more than characters with fleshed out motivations and clear goals.
The setting is just the foundation for everything else, not the goal in itself. Otherwise why even bother with Skyrim? You can just play Dear Esther or Edith Finch.

People really overstate how buggy the game was. I played it for hundreds of hours on 360 and the only notable ones were the giant launching you into the air which was just funny, putting too many items into a display case in your house would make them explode when you next entered, and being able to get under the map in towns and access the merchant's chests for free stuff. PC gays always say "the game is unplayable without a million mods" but that's not even close to true.

i haven't played this game in like over 10 years should i play it again its been on my mind for ages and i wanna try modding (i know that's a whole can of worms)

    is it worth it

The game is a 5/10 unmodded, modding can take it to a solid 8/10. Just take note of whatever you don't like, and there's probably a mod to fix it, while turning it into a sex game that perfectly reflects your personal tastes.

Could be fun, but I wonder how certain quest would work with more than 1 player. Feel like there's going to be a lot of game breaking bugs and Skyrim has enough of those in the base game already.

I can’t stop watching this video even though it’s clearly staged, everything about it is perfect

They way his parents are with him excited to see how happy she is her husbands returned home, the fact he’s wheelchair bound and his only solace through his struggle was knowing his whale girlfriend was back home waiting for him, they way the nig is playing her ass like bongo drums when he walks in then runs for the fricking window and jumps out, the way the cuck falls out of his wheelchair in emotional agony and starts pleading with the landwhale

Absolutely 10/10 video with an important lesson about fat women and military wives too, I’m still in tears from laughing, thank you for sharing anon

I feel like doing another play though, but it's been awhile. What are some good mods that improve quality/textures/etc. I want to keep gameplay and story intact as possible just update the core game to utilize better hardware.

suddenly you become arch mage in mage guild, it doesn't make sense, thieves guild however you must do side quest to become the leader of the thieves guild

I downloaded a mod that forces you to do a set amount of radiant quests to proceed to the next quest, set to 7 radiant quests. And what I learned is that it was tedious and sometimes I wished that I could just progress already. Todd was right about letting the player skip the progression part if the player wants to and letting the player craft his own story by deciding when to advance himself and by giving the player access to the radiant quests anytime. Maybe it is the fault of the radiant quests being simple kill and go back formula, but then thieves guild was like that too though it's not kill but steal.

So let's go over the basics:
              >Skyrim needs a mod to fix basic bugs that have existed for a decade
              >Skyrim needs players to "create their own story"
              >Skyrim needs more mods to go from 5/10 to an 8
Sounds like a lot of unpaid work for what is a very shallow game. If Bethesda can't be bothered to write engaging stories, then why should the player do it for them?

i couldnt believe it when brynjolf immediately believed karliah when he was shown gallus's journal KEK. i dont know what happened back there. does brynjolf know falmer, or did the scholar make another journal but translated? if the journal was the translated version, why would brynjolf immediately trust a journal with someone elses handwriting?
