I've never really put much thought into this, but while racism was definitely a part of it, from what I gather the general timeline was something like this.

            >Europeans discover the Americas
            >claim ownership of it after some scuffles with the locals
            >they establish colonies like they always did when they got new land
            >bought slaves from African warlords as that was the cheapest and most convenient way to get them
            >create entire systems around slavery
            >they relinquish their ownership after multiple different wars about the colonies independence
            >since slavery was so commonplace for all of human history and baked-in to the system it stuck around
            >after a while of it people started making justifications as to why it was a good thing
            >one of which was that slaves were inherently inferior so being a slave was actually an improvement to their lives
            >badda bing badda boom, our modern "version" of racism is born

TL;DR: Slavery was what "created" modern racism. Not the other way around.
Or at least, that's what I came up with while in the shower.

Modern version of racism is usually traced back to the Spanish Reconquista, well before New World colonization. It was an anti-imperial and liberatory ideology meant to clarify the distinction between native Iberians and Moorish overlords.

              Anonymous

I would say that modern racism was created after the slaves were free. Suddenly the whites in the South need to justify why they didn't allow Blacks to vote or run for government so they created a bunch of laws that basically guarantee that only affect Blacks and then the stereotype about black are more likely to be criminal( because they keep breaking the rules we made for them to break)
              >You need a literate test to be able to vote or run for office, unless you're white.
              >You walk near the train track? That's trespassing and your punishment is either hard labor (which most likely will kill you) or sold yourselves at Not!Slave for some rich guy to pay the fine for you.

The first slaves in the Americas were native, both indigenous and European-owned, but they weren't very well-suited to the work they were being made to do and either died or kept running away. West Africans had been used as slaves in the Muslim world for centuries by that point, and there was a very well-established slave trade that the Spanish and Portuguese were able to tap into to meet their sudden need for lots of slaves.

The need for some kind of racial theory to justify why it was ok to keep African slaves happened way later, and only because European moral thought had advanced to the point that it was even necessary to come up with a justification more sophisticated than "we did it because we could."

not as bad as being a free man and being converted into a slave, I'd imagine.

all the old navies of the world used what was basically forced servitude to get sailors to man their ships back in the day since apparently being out at sea for months or years on end just a small step from some horrible death wasn't something people willingly signed up for unless you were an officer.

I mean its safe to say I probably have it better than 100% of people back then, but I'm not trying to compare suffering. My point is that no matter how nice my life looks, I don't feel free. Not in the ways that matter. I don't feel like my life is my own. I worry that most people don't feel free and that humanity will always be comprised of slaves. Even if things are "better" now, I am still not content, I want real freedom for humanity.

I believe the opposite, everyone everywhere that isn't a literal caged prisoner is free. Even the ancient Roman slave. The feeling you have is the feeling of lacking power. If your mindset is wrong and you are not part of the elite you will never feel free.

I generally agree with you. There is no external force that is making humanity be this way, it is only is. But is there a way to make the average person feel powerful enough to take their life into their own hands? If life is perception, then we need to change the perception that we live in. People won't believe it if they can't see it.

The life the Black folk lived in america was a thousand times better than the life they lived in africa, anyways, so no surprise a lot of them were totally fine with their enslavement. Some Black folk even worked their way into being free men and bought their own slaves. Also, think about all the Black folk who are on the dole their entire lives in the u s. right now, this very day. The only piece of media that nailed slavery in my opinion was the TV show Rome.

New vegas had an ok take on it as while portraying it in a purely negative light they didn't went out of their way to make "slavery bad" a core message.

An even better approach would have been to show that friendship and love was possible between a slave and a master, and that masters are expected to free good slaves in their deathbed, as is evidenced by roman, ancient greek and ancient arabic literature, that most domestic slaves were treated with empathy and didn't hate their jobs anymore than modern wageslaves.

It would also have been interesting to show military slaves, as those often had a status higher than most free men (see the janissary in Turkey or the mameluks in Egypt)

I doubt slavery in America reflected slavery portrayed in movies. The only movie that I find realistic about slavery was gone with the wind, from a book written by a woman who actually lived in a South before the civil war.

It makes sense when you think about it for a moment. If you treat your slaves like animals they will rebel at some point and murder you in your sleep (this actually happened to a north african slave).
Domestic slaves often loved their masters, field slaves not so much and sure I wouldn't want their places but records show that they didn't work anymore than free men on their own plantations.

It is well documented that slaves had an incredibly low mortality rate on the job. Unless you were Orish of course. Then you were sold to Portuguese and worked to death on a sugar plantation. African slaves were much more valuable and thus not mistreated as badly. They were used to the heat of the South. They had natural immunity or robustness at least to tropical diseases that were similar in Africa and the Americas. And the talk of 1 in 3 slaves dying on the Atlantic crossing fails to mention that 1 in 3 crew members perished too. Slaves died at about 1 in 100 in the US. Irish slaves dies 1 in 2 if I recall correctly.

Slavery is extremely inefficient and stifles innovation. If slavery was effective we'd still have it today.

We have slavery today, fricking moron? Where do you think all the goods you consume and purchase are made in?

I don't get your point, none of the people working in the "slave" factories in china are forced to work there. Also, factory work earns more in china than being a literal land-owning peasant, so a lot of the farmer peasants work in the factories for a couple of months out of the year. Now, explain to me again, how they are slaves?

It's only ever inefficient if the slaves don't willingly subject themselves to it. It's that simple. Everyone under the Legion is unironically a slave to Caesar.

Slavery has existed for thousands of years. It's clearly been extremely efective. That slavery isn't cool now is something you can blame on modern thinking.

No it's pretty well described, your pic rel is peak midwittery.
Plus even if it's not really it it's cohesive in universe with Caesar personality and objectives.

Chris Avellone stated in a tweet that making the Legion a joinable faction was a bad idea and would never pass today due to their blatant misogyny and countless other reasons why they are a terrible choice for the wasteland.
The main game designer and project lead literally said the Legion was never meant to be joinable. They are one-dimensional evil bad guys at best with zero logical reasons why you would support them. Why do you think the NCR had more base game quests than the Legion? Because they clearly saw them as the better option and prioritised giving them development time over the Legion because they were a more legitimate choice that players would choose.

What I got from that is that Chris Avellone should not be part of anything New Vegas related moving forward.

Yeah Christ Avellone is a fricking moron. In fallout 4 you can join a bunch of radiation worshipping lunatics and commit mass murder so they can take over the island.
Misogyny though? NOPE THAT'S WHERE WE DRAW THE LINE

What's wrong with enslaving NPCs? Are you telling me that they deserve some sort of human dignity?

Slavery is here today, through the COVID 19 Population Control Agenda, The Great Reset, and 5G consciousness trojan manipulation agenda. Buy silver, hate the antichrist, be a sigma male, and achieve gnosis.

It’s a shame that people have become too unintelligent or sensitive to enjoy fictional media in a complete vacuum. If I am enjoying a medium about a post apocalyptic world then I would expect slavery themes to pretty normal. Kenshi is probably the best game example for this, for example early game as a slave is actually safer than a lot of other beginnings. You are fed, safe from warmongers, you are given shelter etc, these are essentials to exist irl too.
It goes without saying that the thought of beings someone’s slave is horrifying, but this is entertainment not real life. It’s such a shame soft morons ruined movies and games all in the same REEEE movement

The legion is bad because it's pointless

NCR proves it's possible to set up a civilization without the need to go full moron LARP
Because make no mistake, the Legion is literally incapable of defeating the NCR

The Legion will always failed. Once Ceasar die, either from natural death or assassination, the Legion is done.

even sooner if Caesar decides to march on the NCR
the NCR wouldn't even have to fight a single battle and could still destroy the Legion entirely just through sheer logistical stress

owning slaves is like owning cattle
they are your property and responsibility so you have to make sure they stay clothed feed and sheltered so they stay healthy enough to work

it's much much cheaper to hire "free" workers for pennies and them keep them impoverished and debt slaved by forcing them to buy food clothes and shelter from you

it's even cheaper if you rent local prison inmates for forced labor, no matter how harsh or dangerous the conditions may be, there's plenty of more sophisticated ways to keep people in perpetual servitude

    slavery is Black person tier

Black folk are still slaves in america.
at first they were chattel slaves, then they were hood culture slaves. They are now fetish slaves.

I wonder that the israelite's next positive PR spin for Black folk will be.
I think they'll go back to slavery, except they'll tell them that its blacks who are the most capable of manual labor

keeping multiculti warm in the minds of those it gets inflicted upon requires some tangiable merit delivered by the constituent races.

most of which get by with cusine, work ethic and menial low wage labor
blacks offer nothing in this regard.
the israelite never once in history worked so hard, as they do to keep western civilization from vomiting the forced consumption of Black folk.
still, they wont ever do it for free, so they produced Black person 'music'
and recently, getting back to your question
