I think most criticism of 4A's broader story ("Observation", Lucifer being a false flag, etc.) come from western fans whose first game was Nocturne and don't understand the broader themes that have been in play since the very beginning. 4A's plot throws back heavily to the pre-Nocturne games, including the first Megami Tensei before it was even called Shin Megami Tensei.
It's the finer details and especially the character writing that blow ass, but the broader plot was legitimately one of the better ones in SMT (not like that's a high standard).

Playing the first couple of SMTs would definitely help with this too. But would even a rerelease of these even be feasible? Not a remaster, or remake, just a rerelease?
No, unless SMT VI is so fricking amazing that it's essentially universally liked. Pokemon Red and Blue are janky as frick, but I'd imagine even newer fans can jump back into it because the modern games appeal to them and the gameplay and UI has remained relatively the same. SMT just doesn't have a similar power. Even Persona lacks it, and as well received 5 was to the masses, I didn't see much interest in older titles in the series.
Atlus keeps re-releasing the older games all the time, they're just Japan only because Nocturne if you don't count Jack Bros was the first SMT released in the west. Sega just needs to toss some spare change at someone to translate the older games.
After reading the 4A art book, I realized the problem isn't actually with Doi himself, but the production staff giving him the orders. For example, Yamai is the one with the toku fetish. The main difference between Doi and Kaneko is that, by the time the west was exposed to SMT at large, Kaneko already had enough seniority that he was part of the creative input instead of just taking orders.

I've been a vocal Doi detractor for a long time. His designs are mostly boring and uninspired and he falls back on "le sexy woman" far too often when designing demons.
Not to say they should have gotten someone to just copy Kaneko, but I don't think Doi is the right fit for the franchise at all.
