Point being that the main quest in DD2 sucks ass though, even compared to the first game which wasn't amazing
Walking around and exploring the world is good fun and undoubtedly leagues above Witcher 3, but writing and atmosphere is just something Witcher does infinitely better

Why is this? Is it because the main story isn't vague enough and gives you too much direction so people just follow the quest markers? Or is it because the game didn't explicitly tell you to "go explore you dumb frick" like BotW did?
Both BoTW and ER's tutorial ends with you being released into the world to roam. DD2's tutorial is you following an npc in a tiny camp and then getting a quest to kill some harpies. To drive this point home even further, BoTW and ER give you a large view of the landscape once you leave their tutorial cave, which naturally piques a player's interest. DD2 is you walking out of an enclosed camp into a dense forest after receiving a timed quest.
DD2's main quest railroads you way harder, for starters, and is super anticlimactic, especially if you've played DD1 and are expecting a twist as you hunt this game's equivalent of the Elysion. Instead, that's when the game reaches its irreversible end point.

honestly, despite the somewhat shallow moveset, nothing really stopped Witcher 3 from having great combat compared to stuff like DD, contemporany elder scrolls, etc
The issue is that the enemy design is fricking boring dogshit.
Theres almost no interesting enemies, but the very few interesting DLC ones make surprisingly nice fights. Almost all bosses are copypasted dogshit or stuff that disables 9/10 your abilities other than generic sword slashes and dodges, yet im pretty sure most people had some degree of fun fighting Dettlaff, all it would need is no autoaim and a more engaging generic vampire melee phase.
The problem with Witcher (and it's the same problem with games like Horizon Zero Dawn) is there isn't a lot of variety in the gameplay. Geralt cannot pick up an axe or a spear or become a bowman. I know he canonically uses his two swords but you're telling me he isn't proficient in the use of all armaments? You're telling me he can't pick up a spear or maybe an even bigger sword like a zweihander and use for a bit? Same thing in Horizon, Alloy generally just uses her bow and sets some traps, but it gets boring when you are doing the same thing over and over again. These are really long games, but the gameplay never evolves, it never changes, even the stats and the upgrades are generic ("your swing does more damage") no extra moves or anything. After like 7-8 hours the gameplay dries up and it's finished.
In games like Monster Hunter and Dragon's Dogma and Dark Souls, you have so many weapons and spells to play around with. That's how these games easily get 150+ hours of gameplay from people.

Yeah CPDR didn't really want to bother with animations too much so anything that could fit the mold of Geralt's swords were put in too, but it doesn't change the gameplay.

The gameplay is ruined by being too easy and repetitive. Every fight feels pretty much identical other than where an enemies weak point is. It's fun for a while but could have been way better.
Just play with your main pawn and not the other two. That's the game's difficulty modes basically. I find the game to be well balanced when it's just you and the one pawn.
I mean, even then it's not hard, but it feels better.
Even then it's unbalanced by the fact that you can't really play certain vocations if you get aggro. I just wish the game had hardier boss monsters with more method required to beat them, that coupled with more dynamic spawns or wandering monsters would have made the game way more satisfying

This guy who was set up in the story as a corrupt piece of shit also happened to murder Wilhemina's parents when she was a little girl. And here is the thing... you don't have to kill him. That's the big thing you are neglecting. There are multiple points in the quest you are allowed to walk away. Even Wilhelmina asks you if you want to continue helping her after you deliver her the proof of his crimes.
From the Arisen's point of view, you either killed him because you agreed with Wilhelmina or you simply wanted to get in her half-beastren pants.

not really. there's multiple endings for most quests, but most of them are pretty generic stuff. there's also very few dilemmas, mostly just failstates. not surprising since the only option you'd have in 90% of quests is the "accept / decline (for now" prompt when taking on the quest. DD2 also has a tiny number of quests (relative to TW3 which is a 100+ hour game despite having free fast travel unlike DD2). not slagging on DD2 just saying there's a lot of dissimilarities.
you need to play NG+ more then, the witcher quests are binary, you can go talk to people during quests for DD2 that aren't "baked in" and it will change the whole dynamic
