Play them a lot as a kid, pretty fun when you get the upgrades. I always thought they were cool because I could never do the bosses but my dad would clear levels easily.
I'm playing through EoSD right now (It's literally on my screen as we speak) and for some reason I can't shoot and move diagonally down+left all at the same time.
I have been playing games almost daily for years and shmups just destroy me each time i play them, i could only manage to finish few of them.
I really like the genre, fun gameplay, great bosses, great settings and character designs, great music and soundtracks but it just i can never get good at it it seems.
Only improvement i saw was playing Hellsinker. and barely killing stage 6 boss after many many times and after two weeks of not playing my skill is slowly going away.
I am not complaining or wants the genre to get easier for me rather want to understand the mind of a good shmups player so i can learn.
same with beat em ups and fighting games, i respect the players who are good at it.

I find grinding a game and mastering it to just be fun, what might be stopping you is the first hurdle, like thinking that you might never be able to do it, that it's taking too long, etc
Just have fun, enjoy yourself, play a lot, watch others play and copy what they do if you have a problem with a boss/level, and you'll get better and better as time goes on Use savestates to learn a level/boss/pattern
Start with rtype and darius. Play actual shmups not those autistic bullet hells. Then move onto basic cave shit later like dodonpachi and mushihimesama and most importantly Play Mars Matrix.
After having tried a few recently on Fightcade I've learned it's a secretly deep genre with incredibly awesome arcade games. So coming from fighting games, these are really fun to sink my teeth into. Great music and sweet graphics. Love them. Not good at any of them yet, but I can't settle on a single game to practice.
Honestly not really, the genre falls apart when you get deeper into it and start going for WRs. You realise how terribly designed the games are at every level.

One of the most common issues is how you get more points the longer a boss fight will last because you can farm on them for score

Or how you have to manipulate "ranking", which is what calculate how hard the game should be, and there is no score multiplier depending on the rank that you are at, so doing bad stuff, like killing yourself etc, is encouraged to score high (and sometime mandatory), some games can't even be beaten past 1 loop if you don't downrank yourself
Imo the best scoring games are Blue Revolver and Crimzon Clover, old shmups have too much flaws in their scoring system

We need more horizontal shmups with big visible animated character sprites or games with a top down view like Pocky & Rocky where you can clearly see your character dashing and moving around and see their or the enemies' expressions, the genre would be far more appealing that way.
