It was more about graphics than actual gameplay as well as pushing DLC hard. But it still has alot of great games to play. The PS4 only had one good year and that was 2015. After that it's just been a slow drip of nice to shit games.
I don't care about the fact that some (well almost all to be fair) of these games ended up either on on PC or on PS4, but the fact that half of those are either ports/remasters/remakes or DLC is trully embarassing.

You can play a huge backlog of PC games going back decades as well as emulating console games. You could rip your local 360/PS3 discs to your pc to play them. The biggest problem I have with the PS5 or series X is theirs just zero games on them.

Anon, these guys from Digital Foundry usually have the best PC possible, and they use a stand-alone machine to do the capture.
The problem with modern PC ports is that a lot of them are crap. You have PCs that are on paper 4x more powerful than a PS5, and yet the devs can't get the game to run properly.
Remember that a good processor + RTX2080 is enough to easily outperform a PS5, yet there are games running poorly even on a fricking RTX4090.

PS3 is easily the biggest library of games I ever owned. I started with the PS2. The PS3 had the best sales on games. You could literally walk in to any Walmart and find a bin with hundreds of games you never played for ten to twenty dollars each and they were nearly all better than the top ten games published in 2023. If you try playing Sonic Adventure DX and it plays like shit, that's because it was designed for a Hall-Effect stick. Controllers are just starting to get hall-effect mods today, that's so ahead of their time they were.
The Xbox felt like the platform of ambition because it was the first console with a hard drive and it was especially ambitious after hardware mods, Friendtech 1.4Ghz mod, extra RAM, homebrew and a bigger hard drive. Even without mods, it was the first console that had lighting shaders.
The PS3 felt like the platform of ambition because of the Cell and the Blu-Ray drive could hold more data
The PC felt like the platform of ambition because John Carmack made quake on a quarter of a million dollar workstation while he waited for consumer hardware to advance so it could run on a Pentium MMX and he optimized for glide after the 3DFX Voodoo came out. PC games were historically ambitious, Deus Ex had small maps on the PS2 because the PS2 didn't have enough RAM. Crysis was ambitious because it was designed for future hardware and really wanted to push gaming.
Now where's the ambition? Contemporary top of the line gaming PCs boarder the limits of the American electrical system with the 4090 and would most certainly flip a breaker if I had an air conditioner and somebody wanted to make a pot of coffee.

Anon, these guys from Digital Foundry usually have the best PC possible, and they use a stand-alone machine to do the capture.
The problem with modern PC ports is that a lot of them are crap. You have PCs that are on paper 4x more powerful than a PS5, and yet the devs can't get the game to run properly.
Remember that a good processor + RTX2080 is enough to easily outperform a PS5, yet there are games running poorly even on a fricking RTX4090.

PS3 is easily the biggest library of games I ever owned. I started with the PS2. The PS3 had the best sales on games. You could literally walk in to any Walmart and find a bin with hundreds of games you never played for ten to twenty dollars each and they were nearly all better than the top ten games published in 2023. The PS2 was a good DVD player. I played one or two games on the thing.

I remember the PlayStation feeling like the "platform of ambition", then the Dreamcast, then the Xbox, the the PS3 and that was so expensive, it felt like a PC tease, so I just went to PC
The PlayStation was the platform of ambition because it was the first widely adopted console that used discs and had a good 3D library, it was a new dimension to gaming even though the Saturn did kinda have 3D.
The Dreamcast felt like a platform of ambition because it was, Sega worked really hard on it and had nice features with the VMU if you were playing NFL2k and it had a Hall-Effect analog stick. If you try playing Sonic Adventure DX and it plays like shit, that's because it was designed for a Hall-Effect stick. Controllers are just starting to get hall-effect mods today, that's so ahead of their time they were.
The Xbox felt like the platform of ambition because it was the first console with a hard drive and it was especially ambitious after hardware mods, Friendtech 1.4Ghz mod, extra RAM, homebrew and a bigger hard drive. Even without mods, it was the first console that had lighting shaders.
The PS3 felt like the platform of ambition because of the Cell and the Blu-Ray drive could hold more data
The PC felt like the platform of ambition because John Carmack made quake on a quarter of a million dollar workstation while he waited for consumer hardware to advance so it could run on a Pentium MMX and he optimized for glide after the 3DFX Voodoo came out. PC games were historically ambitious, Deus Ex had small maps on the PS2 because the PS2 didn't have enough RAM. Crysis was ambitious because it was designed for future hardware and really wanted to push gaming.
Now where's the ambition? Contemporary top of the line gaming PCs boarder the limits of the American electrical system with the 4090 and would most certainly flip a breaker if I had an air conditioner and somebody wanted to make a pot of coffee.
