So what is the best PS1 emulator in A.D 2020?

So what is the best PS1 emulator in A.D 2020? Trying to play pic rel on ePSXe, but every time I try to fix graphics or sound something else breaks/slows down. Is DuckStation for PC any good? Something modern-feeling would be nice.

>inb4 use real hardware

I would but my CRT doesnt like the PS1 I have.

Just use Mednafen, epsxe is such a shitty choice in 2020. Alternatively, get official eboots from nicoblog and play them on your PSP or Vita.

Duckstation is fantastic and works wonderfully on my toaster. It is the least resource intensive PS1 emulator I've used by far, during gameplay my CPU only very rarely goes above 10% usage, its temps stay below 50 and the fans are nice and quiet. Every game I've thrown at it runs great, highly recommend it.

just use retroarch. its cores are just as accurate, plus you get a ton of options.

Parasite Eve was really popular but it has licensing issues.

think i've read it somewhere about it, that it's basically sitting on a legal limbo with the book author and whatnot

Really tho aside from old players would zoomers play this game? It was popular back in the day after all. Is fan community still alive?

hmm, never tried DuckStation out, seems pretty legit. The real question is; does it emulate the Wipeout properly? every emulator i've tried has issues with audio, which is kinda important in the wipeout series

not bad, still some slight audio jitters every so often, but way better than ePSXe

who in their right mind would be using epsxe in 2020
just download retroarch like a normal person

is this mednafen? if so, what settings do you use to have those clean graphics? i need this or 3D games. 2D games are fine with the original resolution though, imo.

If you're using official eboots from PSN or CD Romance, then yes they will work without issue. However, some like Puzzle Fighter only work on PS3. Furthermore, games like Ape Escape with right-analog functionality can't be played, nor can games that require a specific accessory like a lightgun.
However, official eboots are great because they come with the manual and a lot of features, and they will let you do things like remap your controller or transfer saves from other eboots which is useful for things like the Psycho Mantis fight in MGS1. Because there is no L2 or R2, if a game requires those you will also have to get creative, maybe with a D-pad/analog remap, or possibly face buttons if those aren't needed. Pressing PS also pauses the game itself unlike on PS3 which is great.
Also, unofficial eboots usually work but aren't as reliable. Just worth pointing out.

Thanks for the clarification! Might I be right to assume that EVERY single eboot on CDromance is official?

They should be. Otherwise it should be clarified in the description imho.
God I remember how fun making my own eboots was...

People hate Retroarch for its clumsy UI and b***hing about the people in charge, but its Beetle core as a Mednafen derivative still gets the job done at least. There's still some things I never figured out how to fix though, like the Dino Crisis pause visual glitch or booting up Codename Tenka properly.

you should emulate Dreamcast version of dino crisis or at the very least play the PC version with that classic rebirth patch - both are superior ways to experience the game

Sometimes seeing the original version is pretty nice. Plus PGXP or whatever effectively fixes the environment texture problems altogether, it's really just the model joint clipping at that point, and I'm not a fan of the slightly washed out colors or texture filtering in the DC version.

does duckstation have a standalone? dont want to use shitty retroarch

Retroarch's Beetle PSX core or Mednafen, they're the same thing. Epsxe was never good.

I used epsxe over a decade back lol. At the time it was all right to use but no reason to anymore.

I started emulating this year and have only ever used EPSXE. Why shouldn't I?

Audio crackling, worse emulation, worse controller support, have to use plugin settings depending on the game such as Legacy of Kain's UI not showing by default, and so forth.

It's functional but there are way better options

Yea I wold like something like epsxe on gui side. For mendafen you need to load some other gui and they are meh iirc and confusing. And I hate retroarch gui.

        Anonymous

For mednafen I would only use the gui for initial setup, then drag & drop the cue files onto the exe. I have medgui reborn and it's controller mapping doesn't work right so I have to do the secret key combo inside mednafen.

because it's terribly outdated and can you just as easily use more modern, better alternatives?
even if you're a moron you can just use retroarch. even better as it comes with a ton of features anyway.

It's bad and it uses pluginz so I'm not seeing any advantages to using it over retroarch.

What is the best ps1 emulator for a shitty laptop? Integrated graphics, 8gb ram, i5, etc. I want to play some games in bed on my laptop rather than on my PC.

You can probably run 10 of them at the same time.

You computer isn't going to have trouble with PS1 emulators unless it's 25 years old

Forgot to say, make sure to create an m3u file for Parasite Eve on Mednafen with both disc 1 and disc 2 then only launch the Parasite Eve m3u file instead of the cues. You can disc swap with F8 iirc.

      Mednafen
