For those of you that don't know originally Sonic Unleashed and by extension Generations to a lesser extend aimed to have realistic CGI pixar like graphics. What they used at the time was global illumination however due to hardware limitations:
- the game shipped with low quality GI maps due to disc storage limitations at the time(wasn't the case in unleashed DLC maps)
- some of the results were baked on the textures because this process is slow as frick.
Right now we have hardware that can do real time RT and that does not seem to be used at all.
Game levels still seem to use the same low quality GI maps and the same pre drawn textures.
Even now you can get major graphical improvements in newer games like sonic frontiers by simply fixing and adjusting their broken global illumination.
In addition to that you can see a lot of the graphical improvements they made appeared in Sonic forces specifically because it targeted higher end hardware than PS3/360. It boggles the mind they can't do that for the remake of probably one of their most popular games in the series.

Don't care+didn't ask
noticed that to they didnt bother to improve the graphics at all + shadows skating animation looks rough
well at the very least the shadow stages look better because they don't bother using low quality GI maps but yes. Now the art style on them is in my opinion worse making them look like shit compared to original generations stages.
from the generations portion of the game I noticed they did not patch a few bugs where the camera clips through objects.
Yeah yeah remaster, tomato tomahto, I am not asking for a rebuild from the ground up either, I am asking for the re-implementation of the lighting engine, something even modders have been doing.
Where did they go? did they retire?
Also considering how good frontiers _can_ look with by just enabling unused engine features i am not sure about that.
Yeah I noticed that too, especially annoying if you want to finish the levels quickly.
>Where did the staff of a constantly underperforming and poorly managed studio go after 16 years?
Are you for real
>Where did they go? did they retire?
Nintendo hired this man
how it looks is honestly the least of this game's problems
SHUT THE FRICK UP IT ISN’T SUPPOSED TO BE A REMAKE YOU DUMBFRICK
PLEASE ADD TANGLE
Why is Shadow stopping time all the time just to perform small cutscenes? Won't that get boring?
it's just to hide loading screens bro
no that's not the case at all, the game by today's standards is very low poly. Same is also true for frontiers which had good reason to have long loading times but simply didn't.
They are just trying to make the character look cool.
Oh. I think it's annoying.
You can use it to find alternate paths too, someone found a hidden Lightspeed Dash trail in the stage demo
The talented devs that made Unleashed's graphics are mostly not there anymore.
>Unleashed
>talented devs
lol
Get out
they are more talented than all western devs
Yes, they were talented enough to get poached by Nintendo to do work on fricking mainline Mario and Zelda.
blame Sega for not making this game (and Frontiers) a proper current gen exclusive
It would be nice to see graphical enhancements that were supposed to be implemented in the original release, but this game as is still holds up visually because of great art direction. I'd dare to say that it's one of the nicer looking games from that generation (no pun intended), same applies to Unleashed.
Unleashed was inspired by pixar movies and wanted to do something you can only do in current year with hardware from 2006.
the lengths they went to were insane
>GDC
I didn't know this was even a thing. Do they still make these? and if so, is SEGA still taking part of it? can't google it right now
It's still going but it went to shit due to pozz, now they talk about inclusivity and pandering to casuals and shit.
So not even actual game development discussions. Yeah that sucks
Pretty much, the older panels had some interesting insights. One of them was an Arc System Works presentation on how they pulled off Guilty Gear Xrd's convincing 2D looking but actually full 3D graphical style.
It would be interesting to watch some of the old vods then, at least
You sometimes get good presentations from japanese developers like Nintendo or Arc System Works
It's not a remake you moron
Generations was always a lazy cash grabs for morons, why would they change it?
It needs to run on Switch, and supposedly it runs at 60fps, which is great.
yes anon I watched that israelitetube video too
The Unleashed team got poached by Nintendo and went on to make Mario Kart 8 which is why that game still holds up visually today even though it's a Wii U game
Will it be fine if I purchase the game on the Switch, or will quality suffer heavily in comparison to the PS5
I think the Switch version is 720p 60fps while the PS5 version is 1080p 60fps
If the port is good I'm double dipping/getting the Switch version as a birthday or Christmas gift since it's 720p 60fps
