Sony CFO Doesn't Deny Possibility Of PS5 Price Increase

>tl;dr: PlayStations selling poorly and no first-party titles
>they spent $3.6B on bungie, making matters worse
>low chip supplies and bad logistics aren't helping either (some places are overstocked, some out of stock)
Reminder they're making a lot of first-party titles on PC, it's all downhill from here and you'll see shills blaming Game Pass.
https://www.dualshockers.com/sony-cfo-doesnt-deny-possibility-of-ps5-price-increase/

>Though there came positive news such as a total of 21.7 million total PS5 units sold, overall, the video games division [...] reported declines year-over-year. Sales overall were down 11.7% and operating income down 30.5%.
>As transcribed by VGC, when CFO Hiroki Totoki was asked if they were considering raising the PS5’s price, they stated that “at this point in time there is nothing specific I can share with you about prices.”
>The previously mentioned declines were mostly attributed to a decrease in sales of first-party and third-party titles, as well as their acquisition of Destiny developer Bungie; Bungie was sold for a reported $3.6 billion USD. Furthermore, Q1 2022 didn’t see the release of any major PlayStation exclusive. Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, both released in the prior fiscal year, in February and March respectively.

>B-But you stupid chud, w-why would t-they raise prices?!
>This refusal to comment is raising more concerns than usual, as it comes off Meta’s recent announcement that they’d be upping the price of their Meta Quest 2 for $100 USD due to rising manufacturing costs

      Anonymous

They're still selling out instantly, raising it would be smart from a business perspective but it's fricking suicide unless they drop it back down a year later because consumers will be pissed and buy a Series X. If Nintendo is smart they release their next system at a premium price initially, let it be sold out constantly for 2 years, then drop the price or introduce a Lite.

      Anonymous

But people are still buying the PS5. It may not reach the hands of consumers but that is of no concern to Sony as long as they can sell the unit to someone. The main problem is the bill of materials (BOM) and making back the money spent on building each PS5. They were breaking even last year but it's uncertain as to whether that has held true with the continuing chip shortage and price increases for everything.

        >It may not reach the hands of consumers but that is of no concern to Sony as long as they can sell the unit to someone.
Except that's a huge fricking problem for Sony. They make money not from selling consoles but from selling digital games, microtransactions and PS+ subscriptions. It doesn't look good for them long term because on one side PC has been on a renaissance lately and directly steal market share from Playstation on one side and on the other Xbox beats them in terms of value on the console offering.

          Anonymous

I know, but I wanted to focus mostly on the physical unit itself as that was what the original post and article pertains to. The driver of Sony's revenue going down in their own ecosystem is a problem that's separate and arguably the more pressing and important issue for Jim Ryan.

            Anonymous

I really hope they continue with their moronic strategy. Every lost PS5 sale has a compounding effect with massive ramifications, someone getting a gaming PC because he couldn't buy a PS5 and sees that PC ports are coming = years of lost revenue for Sony.

              Anonymous

They never made that much money on hardware anyways, PC is a viable strategy for Sony where hardware is basically a loss leader for their ecosystem for some time now since the PS3. Jim Ryan isn't a gamer but the shareholders and board of directors didn't put him in the CEO position if he didn't know how to run the business and do what is necessary to keep it running smoothly.

          >that's not true, they have production issues
Are you questioning what Sony published in their financial statements which have to be legally true where they were increasing supply for the holiday and on track with their target production numbers? You will need some extrodinary strong proof which you most certainly don't have to disprove that.

          https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/22q1_sonyspeech.pdf

          >It may not reach the hands of consumers
There is still no proof that the majority of console sales come from scalpers. Even at peak scalper frenzy, nothing credible shows the percentage of scalpers being over 15%. While even 15% is still high, it doesn't pain the same picture.

I was not implying that was the case, but I also should've worded it better where I meant that not every PS5 unit reaches a consumer. And 15% is extraordinarily high for a product and a big loss for Sony where 15% of their PS5 owners aren't generating money for the company.

Probably because the PS5 digital isn't making a profit and is actually more likely making massive losses for sony. The ps5 disk is making a profit though but if they increase the price of the digital to decrease their losses it'll make it look like shit value if there's only like $50 between disk and digital so they'd have to increase the disk price too. They should have just gone the xbox route with 2 different consoles with different specs because if you followed the build up of these consoles there was a leaked investors video from xbox where they said they purposely went with 2 different hardware configurations because there is no sign that prices will decrease like they did in previous gens where big node shrinks were available and other stuff.

Doesn't always work out if they're not getting enough systems produced to get an economy of scale going.
That's what really killed the Wii U, the hardware was custom, had no other applications, and couldn't be produced in significant quantities to allow the price to be brought down.

With custom hardware the larger the batch size and the more frequent the orders the cheaper the bulk orders can be. I think Sony and Microsoft both fricked themselves over this gen by aiming too high.

Sony and MS going forward needs to adopt the nintendo strategy by using an already offered hardware choice(obviously not ARM based). This could cut down costs but obviously you can't tout which is stronger anymore.

Scalpers are buying them in mass, so it would be wise for Sony to increase the price of the PS5 to make money off hardware sales instead of selling them at a near loss because Sony isn't making much money from PS5 game sales. By doing this scalpers get a taste of their own dirty tactics.

Steam opened up the Chinese market for them. That's why all the devs are rushing to release titles on PC. It's incredibly hard to get foreign games approved for the Chinese market but the loophole of releasing them on Steam with Chinese language support and having the Chinese use a VPN to buy them allows them to not have to worry about getting their game through all the regulations typically imposed on Chinese releases. The other loophole is the Chinese buying consoles from other regions that aren't region locked and then importing Taiwanese copies of games(or buying digitally) but the Chinese are mostly PCgays so Steam is more lucrative.

That's why everything 3rd party gets released on PC, the Chinese market is too big to ignore.

I wouldn't rule Nintendo eventually having a Game Pass of their own for modern titles, maybe with the launch of their next system for people to catch up on the Switch titles they might have missed out on, as a way to hype up sequels released on the new system. When that happens I can see them eventually having a PC client to stream those games, the future of gaming is going to be subscription services from all 3 companies and Nintendo is already no stranger to cloud versions of games.

So far they've been acting like Disney of old. Nintendo has been very protective of their IPs and believes that the key to long term success is to maintain and exclusive and premium brand image. If they abandon their traditional philosophy I expect them to become mega israelites and prostitute their games everywhere until nobody cares anymore and they become just another 3rd party publisher.

            >It will never happen
Traditional consoles already ended, the current crop are basically all commodity hardware running custom OSes to make them walled garden devices. Don't be surprised if Microsoft goes to a streaming-only 'virtual console', Sony exits, and only Nintendo is left along with Valve to push gaming on local devices.

            >Nintendo will never be a PC publisher

              >Traditional consoles already ended, the current crop are basically all commodity hardware running custom OSes to make them walled garden devices.
Which only aids the argument that they're here to stay, consoles have only gotten easier to develop for and multiplats are easier than ever to make. There will always be a market for a "stupid PC" whose entire custom OS is completely operable with only a controller.
              >Don't be surprised if Microsoft goes to a streaming-only 'virtual console'
I would be extremely surprised considering all the Dolby licenses they put effort and money towards specifically for Xbox, all the BC efforts specifically for Xbox, and for how their streaming solution is done via a stripped-down Series X server blade. Not to mention the US' dogshit access to internet, ISP caps, etc, it's going to take a long time for a "streaming-only" future to be possible which is a hard lesson Stadiagays have also learned.
              >Nintendo will never be a Windows publisher, there is a difference.
Nintendo will always strive to make their own hardware that they have the final say on and are in charge of, be it handheld or hybrid console.

                >There will always be a market for a "stupid PC"
That market only exists because Microsoft cripples Windows to prevent it from functioning that way. With Microsoft losing control of the personal computing device market, Windows is now under 30%, it seems unlikely they'll be able to preserve that. This is in fact why Microsoft is buying up publishers so they can side step no longer owning the hardware platform to own the streaming platform and guarantee themselves reliably monthly subscription revenue.

                >how their streaming solution is done via a stripped-down Series X server blade
Because that's still the best way to implement this kind of service, Stadia also uses a AMD sourced uniform server board. Doesn't mean they'd release the hardware to end users.

                >a hard lesson Stadiagays have also learned.
Stadia's only issue was Google didn't money hat the publishers to force them into an ala carte subscription service. Microsoft is obviously not making that mistake.

                >Not to mention the US' dogshit access to internet
Online games are already largely designed around the limitations of shitty internet, and as in the past mass market consumers will accept a lower quality of game for increased convenience.

                >Nintendo will always strive to make their own hardware
Probably, but that doesn't mean that they won't release games on other platforms, which they have in fact done, or that they won't partner with other companies for that hardware, Switch is basically an Nvidia shield device after all.
It seems doubtful Nintendo will ever make the mistake of competing with themselves by having multiple systems on the market, but they have in fact published software on other platforms that served market segments that they don't have access to with their in-house hardware.
Just don't expect Nintendo to ever do business with Sony or Microsoft.

Yes. Do you really think if Microsoft had been successful at capturing the phone market they wouldn't be counting phones?

                >android computers used in business?
You realize the vast majority of Windows PCs are dedicated office machines?

Windows is also trending down when you just look at desktops. From over 95% 20 years ago to under 66% today in the US.
Worse, from a business perspective nobody in the enthusiast gaming community pays for Windows.
That means Microsoft has no incentive to improve Windows as a gaming platform.

you're missing the fact that Microsoft has infinite money to burn. Losing money on hardware doesn't bother them, and they are smart enough to realize gamers like hardware.

They wouldn't have made the XSX backwards compatible with 360 discs otherwise. They understand a streaming only future will alienate all their gamers - a lesson learned from the Xbone.

                >you're missing the fact that Microsoft has infinite money to burn.
They don't, they operated on that mind set for a long time, and throwing money at the problem hasn't solved it. Microsoft has to continually generate increased shareholder value, and burning money to always be third-place in the end user market isn't contributing to that goal like cloud services is.

Even Microsoft has their limits when it comes to money pits as seen with their dropping the Trident web rendering engine. I know nobody wants to admit it, but IBM was once in the position Microsoft is in today, seemingly an unstoppable juggernaut who has dominated the market for decades, but they could easily see the same thing IBM did and realize that they'd be more profitable dropping out of the end user market.

                >Also is windows really losing the personal competing market?
Yes, not sure why this is surprising. They really had nowhere to go but down after completely dominating the industry.

No one worth a damn has ever said a Nintendo console won't be hard to crack open because the security has never been any good until the Switch revisions. Console companies only get better at refining their security over time, even PS4 CFW leaves a lot to be desired compared to how simple and permanent it is on a PS3.

ps3 had nogaems and yet in the first 3 years I could actually name a handful of titles I'd wanna play. Yet PS5 is nearing that same point and there is NOTHING. Since PS4 sony is selling consoles on AAA multiplats alone now, since they won over the US audience and became the go-to for cowwadoody and divegrass/handegg. Yet they also made Xbox the underdog and they literally drilled through over the course the years leading up to the nextbox/series X launch. Gamepass for them was the piercing point. Now they're gonna keep going up while Sony got way too wienery.

The only people buying from Sony are scalpers. By increasing their price to match the scalpers resale price there won't be any problem, since people that want to own a PS5 are already willing to pay that increased price.

        Anonymous

Then the scalpers will just buy all the stock at the increased price and scalp the console even more.

          Anonymous

This. What Sony needs to do is adopt the system Valve has for the Steam Deck.
Sell only through their own site.
You get a single reservation at a time for an address.
Everybody has their place in line.
You get your system for MSRP when your number is called.

Sure there will still be people scalping the system, but it will be more difficult and they'll have less ability to walk into a store and buy out all of the stock.

            Anonymous

The main issue is that they have to keep relations with retailers, physical and digital, which is the thing that throws a wrench into the whole system Valve has. Retail relations are difficult to manage and you can't control what they do with your product once they order it in bulk from you. I do agree that for the consoles you can buy directly from Sony themselves, they have screwed up spectacularly and should be adopting a system like Valve.

  35. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

    >Reminder they're making a lot of first-party titles on PC
This is the logical conclusion for expensive consoles which sell at a loss or razor thing margins at best. If selling the hardware isn't really profitable, why sell hardware when there's a huge customer base out there interested in your software but also willing to get hardware on their own so you don't need to deal with that shit? Selling games on PC just brings in extra money for not a lot of extra effort.

So... what's the sales figures for the X-Box equivalent? I hear a lot of talk about PS5 this, PS5 that, never in stock, hard to get, etc. but I... hear oddly little about the direct competitor this generation. What's going on with it?

It's in stock now so people who want it have it. That and Microsoft is banking off PC now so it's hard to tell where they really stand.

        Anonymous

Sounds like MS made huge mistake then. PS5 is quite vulnerable right now, but instead of MS presenting an alternative, the views seem to be that PS5 is basically a monopoly right now despite it trickling to the customer base so slowly. MS fricked up the previous generation too with that whole "the alternative to XBOX1 is the XBOX360" fiasco, but this generation seems even worse.

          Anonymous

Their alternative is the Series S from the low end. I wouldn't call that a mistake or failure, it's just addressing a different part of the market. Microsoft's biggest problem is lack or first party games but it's been doing well on the GamePass front and everything else from third party games to features.

Sony's CFO needs to find a new job if he thinks this news is even remotely smart.

Microsoft is buying up studios left and right. Sony already fears the Activision acquisition, and the Skyrim 6 false marketing hasn't even begun yet. If they deny Sony the game, it's over for dudebros...which is actually excellent, get rid of them all! Sadly, Japan isn't in charge of Sony anymore, so it's not even a real secret strategy.

  52. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

It's funny that scalpers are literally killing Sony. They buy up all the stock and let it sit in their garage until someone buys it off them. In the meantime, nobody is buying games for those shelved consoles. So when sales figures are reported back, the 3rd parties (Sony's bread & butter) see that they aren't performing like the previous generation, and now those parties now have to start looking elsewhere for their revenue. And with the loss of exclusives and games in general, now Sony has nothing to fall back into.
