Missions aren't as fun due to being poorly balanced, same for the new flying units (which is more of a gimmick) while the campaign can drag on. In the previous game characters would have flavourful interactions with each other, something that was scrapped and it added a ton of flavour.
For what it's worth, game has best multiplayer balance and lots of mods
asiatics and other 999999999 APM tryhards will say it's StarCraft.
Chill dudes will claim that it's AoE II.
I can't really say what's the best middle ground RTS is. There's just too much in the middle ground, I guess.

This. Nuhammer stuff just looks so cartoon-y compared to the SOVL of 3rd/ 4th edition, even if I do like some of the new Necron and Admech stuff. Just stick to mods.
Why exactly is Soulstorm seen as inferior to Dark Crusade?
The campaign in dark crusade was better but soulstorm had better MP servers
Winter Assault still has the best campaign.
DC multiplayer was always DOA because it has desync bugs that ruin games constantly

I prefer DoW over Starcraft because it has actual armored vehicles.

In retrospect it probably helped inspire DoW.

I mean Kohan 2 is 3d. But yeah it's a great game. I've played every DoW but 3 and every Kohan so you'll just have to trust me.
