>an unbeatable force.
The archdemon wasn't at ostagar and the king's troops were doing fairly well considering half the army wasn't there.
If it weren't obvious enough based on how the cutscene was directed, they were losing pretty badly. And the Archdemon not being there in spite of this is incredibly damning. They were severely outnumbered and were getting hammered on all fronts and even had to deal with bullshit magic artillery smashing against them. They would have lost. This isn't really debatable.
They were holding fine and only after he calls the retreat does the cutscene show it going sideways. You know, since half the army failed to show up because of one man's petty pride.
They weren't losing at all. They only started getting stomped when they got overran because Loghain pulled out. Watch it again.

I'll just say it again, they were obviously fighting a losing battle from the very beginning. The scene was shot to specifically show you how grossly outnumbered the humans were int he face of the enemy. The Darkspawn were swarming across the landscape like a horde of vermin and on top of this the battle opens up with them already breaching the stronghold. And their position wasn't very defensible and the allied forces were idiots by having all their troops out in the open and not actually behind walls. It wasn't even a siege where one side of being defensive while the other is offensive, the defenders acted like they were ont he offence and had all their troops meet right outside of their fortress. And someone brought up the Archdemon like this would be a good argument. The Archdemon not being there is actually bad, because even if they did somehow barely manage to win it wouldn't have mattered at all.
>Saves lives >Then wastes them on a civil war because half the arls can see a peasant making a grab at the throne using his barren daughter as a sock puppet
Yeah great plan and not at all motivated by his hatred of Orlais blinding him.
Yes you're right, he saved them from dying for nothing then had them die for nothing as demons consumed the land. Truly the master of strategy and the best move was abandoning half the army at a highly defensible position not because of any strategy, but literally because he hates the fricking not!French and nothing else.
>It was a real blight
He couldn't know that when even the gray wardens didn't want to bet it's a blight. >there was no way to end it without outside help
Obviously proven wrong by the fact it happens without Orlais' help in the resolution of the game.
The real mistakes were to give up a defensible choke point and then pin the king's death on the wardens for literally no reason or benefit. Whatever forces he was counting to rally could not have been worth giving up Ostagar and having the blight ravage the land and then have to fight it in the open, as remember he would not have access to elves and dwarves, only the gray wardens could make them show up.
(me) >it happens without Orlais' help in the resolution of the game.
I just realized that he couldn't have known it would possibly require elves and dwarves at the time he was making that decision, but either way it wasn't a given that the incursion was somehow "unstoppable", the real extent of the darkspawn army had not yet been gauged at the time of Ostagar as even Duncan says he's not sure it's an actual blight.
how can you be a gamer and unfamiliar with rpgs at this point. Even fricking minecraft has rpg elements. The only thing required for dao is an attention span longer than 5 minutes. The fact that is has a good story is a miracle as it clearly prioritized cinematography over the classical rpg elements.
People actually complained that this game was too difficult when it came out. Just take the Arcane Warrior pill and you'll be fine. Or play on a medium difficulty.
It was confirmed by devs they would lose even if Logain would not frick off the battlefield. Logain was right, unless you value fairness ' over cold calculation. It won't buy you survival tohugh.
>*dies*
he was completely right
How so?
All he acomplished was delaying the inevitable.
It was a real blight and there was no way to end it without outside help.
If he didn't retreat they basically all would have died for nothing. At least retreating saves lives in the face of an unbeatable force.
The force at the keep was beatable and it was a well defendable position, retreating doomed the settlements further down the line.

We're not talking about the aftermath, we're talking about the battle. No one defends his actions after that.

Is DA:O good for people unfamiliar with RPGs? I'm about halfway through the Mass Effect trilogy and it's my only exposure to the genre.

Yeah it's pretty darn good for a beginner. Just don't be moronic with your talents
I had no qualms executing him for all the crimes he did in the game
Playing through this just now, I just did the lands meet mission.
Leliana is cute.
