They're padding the wait between mainlines with remasters and remakes, if they keep working on current standards it won't take longer than 3 years too, EB should have come out two years ago if it weren't for Covid.
If EB sells more than anticipated they might finally give them money to work with and ask them for a bigger scale project, but even if that happens it's unlikely Kawazu will accept until he's doing his final project before retirement, and that will take a decade or so from now.

They'd need to have conservative expectations if it were to do so. I love that the series has made a come-back, but some of the entries can be very divisive to standard RPG players.
It's not that unlikely, Frontier Remasters sold better than they expected, the demo was well received in JP and since it's on everything but the Xbone they're bound to see some decent numbers.
Japs also don't care much about graphics, it's not going to push big numbers in the west much like the previous games, but Japan is definitely going to carry the overall sales.

This isn't just a Square Enix problem. Single player games are not making any money. Nearly every single high profile AAA single player game in recent years has sold far below expectations, and even the ones that do sell "well" are not turning a profit. This is part of the reason why there's virtually no major single play AAA releases for the rest of the year even though we're only in April. Unless they can manage to get these absurd production budgets and develoment spans massively reduced, the future of video games is going to be relegated to multiplayer P2W gacha shit and indie titles.
As for what SE is going to do they'll probably just dump more resources into FFXIV since that is literally the only thing that has been bringing them a consistent stream of profit for years now.
Their AA games flop too. The only one that was a hit was the first octopath traveler and only because Nintendo did a ton of marketing for it since they had no other games at the time.

The problem is with there big game releases. FF7 Rebirth did pretty poorly sales wise, and the company is in a real pickle as a whole.
FF15, 16, and the new 7 remakes are becoming quite uninteresting on the plot and gameplay department. Its clear that both there core Japanese audiences and there worldwide markets are tired of how bland the Final Fantasy franchise has become as a whole. They do have Kingdom hearts and dragon quest. With dragon quest, I don't see how that franchise can really ever fail; especially with eastern players. Kingdom Hearts...eeehh, I'm not to sure. If were looking at the other big contributor in the KH series, Disney, Its pretty clear there not doing good either. They have also fallen in the same trap of bland content that a lot of bigger entertainment companies have fallen in these last couple of years. The way I see it, no matter how convoluted and difficult the kingdom hearts plot becomes to follow, what makes these games make money is there gameplay and Disney worlds. As much as most KH fans might not like to hear this; I wouldn't be shocked if they started to integrate Marvel and Star Wars into the series. One step I feel like they should take for the KH world is add "REAL" spinoffs. perhaps Maybe even new games with there own plots, characters and world's.
Really I think square needs to focus in creating new franchises. The final fantasy ship is kind of crashing as of late, really only leaving DQ and KH, and even KH could be a risky franchise profit wise.
