stalker shadow of chernobyl

been playing this. having fun, but i gotta say the difficulty was very front loaded. i died a bunch in the early game when all i had was a very inaccurate pistol or shotgun with little ammo. now the question is, how worth is it to play the other two games after this one? do they add anything? because i think i've played enough if they don't do anything to change up the gameplay too much.

CS has janky faction wars mechanics but is a retread for the most part. The early guns suck even more.

CoP adds more gun customization and a better artiffact system. Most people tend to see it as the mechanical peak of the series

      Yes.

On a surface level, they are just "more of the same". But they all have their own clear tone differences, with CS also introducing a pile of small additions.

      Because consoles, that's why.
It used to be a common norm on PC for many, many years.

        >unloading magazines for ammo
frick i hate doing thing. it is super tedious, i wish there was an option without having to go into your inventory to do it, like you could just hit a keybind when hovering over a weapon to unload magazine and loot just that. i bet i have wasted tons of time picking up guns just to see if they have a couple bullets i can loot, and becoming overburdened and unable to walk so i can't even do a bunch of guns at once.
        >Found the Analmeme shill.
don't know what this means, but i am probably halfway through soc, and the story has been very barebones. "uuh kill strelok, that's what your pda says." then several hours of wandering to and fro between people "oh THIS guy knows about strelok, go ask him" and then randomly you meet the doctor "hows it going strelok?" like, i get that it is a janky, poorly translated game from ukraine, but they could have frontloaded the plot a LITTLE bit more than they frontloaded the difficulty.

Oh the funny thing about early game in the original SoC and CS is that it they have a bug where the accuracy of npcs was supposed to scale linearly with their rank but they fricked up the formula (they changed it from 0-100 to 0-1000) and it scales real fast to 89 out of 1000 rank points at which npcs with that rank (who are still novices) have almost 100% accuracy. After that all npcs have the same accuracy as shown in the pic. In CoP they fixed most of it but somehow the 89 rank points peak bug is still there.

It's a prequel about a merc that aids a group of soldiers/scientists called the Clear Sky faction. They all die to an emission in the end. It's not really important other than explaining why Strelok was on the death truck at the beginning of SoC and it even has a continuity error (you go through the whole business of deactivating the psychic emitters in Yantar again in CS but for some reason they're back on in SoC)

Nah, it's one of those 'real gamer' games that you pretend to play all the way through. Most of us get through the beginning then watch a few playthroughs videos on youtube, just enough to make up our own experience.

im more than halfway through, though. what is the purpose of "pretending" to play through a game? also, have never heard of anyone outside of Ganker talk about these games, so not sure what "gamer cred" you are getting for even pretending.

It's implied that some of them do become Monolith afterwards
MC's signature weapon you can see in the opening cutscene (and retrieve in the starting area if you know where to look) is the Vintorez. There's a Monolith dude in Pripyat in SoC that has a Vintorez and people think that guy might be the CS protagonist. It's notable since that's the only place in the game you can get one besides the Army Warehouses.

I am currently in the process of installing Clear Sky. I'll grab reclamation project too to fix some bugs. Thanks for being straightforward.

CS feels like a direct upgrade to SoC at first. Perhaps the end game section is probably the worst part about it and really leaves a shit taste in your mouth when you complete it. Many aspects of the game have been directly improved over the first but somethings like the grenade spam, constantly bleeding and having to use multiple bandages and only bandages to fix your bleeding in the early game is real fricking awful. Also artifact hunting is completely different but I would say they have better stats and aren't as redundant as the ones from SoC so it is pretty fun. CoP is the definitively better game but you miss out on the other environments that CS has to offer and the faction system is neat but most like it or don't care for it. Not an important part of the game by any means.

Just a heads up before you leave the first area, there is an entrance the game tells you to take. Just don't take that entrance and take another. Depending on the difficulty you are playing, it is impossible to pass. I say this as I got fricked by this area the first time I played it.

Clear Sky's balancing being utter shit because playtesters played it with god mode on is one of those hearsays that make a lot of sense
    >bleeding doesn't automatically stop, even if it's the lesser tier of it
    >enemies don't drop enough bandages
    >getting hit by a stray buckshot pellet, one of the most common early game calibres, is enough to send you straight into tier 3 bleeding
    >guns are made so shit on purpose, to the point they need lots of upgrades in order to be as good as vanilla SoC guns
    >the machinegun in Cordon and the game giving the average player the impression that's the only point they can enter Cordon from

It's funny how non-existent CoP's plot is, it's like they took a side quest and made it the main story.

      >also here's Strelok
      That's it.

It starts to make something of itself in Jupiter when you start putting together the team to go to Pripyat and of course once you find the survivors there and help them secure their position and the evac mission underway
But yeah, I think the thinner plot makes sense for a series like STALKER . It just needs an excuse to send you to weird locations in the Zone and get you immersed in the atmosphere and its done its job

the most moronic thing about CoP is that it happens in 2012 or whenever, at a point where the military already has plenty of experience with the Zone thanks to competent military stalkers

Yeah by the time you get a real rifle the game pretty much turns into a run and gun. When I found the GP37 I could click on heads all day.
Think the devs knew this since the amount of enemies you fight from Pripyat onwards is ridiculous and kinda made me miss the guerilla fighter feel of the early game.

      >Run and Gun
I wish. There are too many claustrophobic areas in early SoC. This is why I really hate the Agropom/Dark Valley section even though it's where you start to get really decent gear. Just feels like a series of hallway shooting levels. The more open maps before and afterwards are more fun

Funnily enough I can't think of any part of CS that felt anywhere near as unfun as the Dark Valley bandit HQ. Like I distinctly think CS is a worse game but the actual levels I can't remember being as bad, just the structure of it

CNPP is alright once you get to the exterior, teleporting bullshit aside

If you're not enjoying it then just stop playing right now to be honest. If you're going to try the sequels I would use those vanilla+ mods though, and then try an overhaul before dropping the series altogether. Stalker can go from being extremely dated and clunky in vanilla to the most immersive and satisfying shooter in the market with some mods.

i am enjoying it, enough to finish what i've started here, but i don't know know if i have it in me for another if there aren't some big switch ups.

I'am in the same situation, finished SoC last week. I'am thinking about going straight to Gamma, have you looked into it?

no idea what gamma is. i'm also playing completely vanilla.

All the games do play basically the same. The big changes in CS and CoP come from how different artifact hunting is. They give you detector items you have to use to make artifacts visible and place them in big anomaly fields, with CoP even going out of its way to model in warped areas around the anomaly fields so you're not just running into random flames in the middle of an empty field or whatever
Apart from that theres... I dunno, there's a ton more mutant enemies in CoP so it actually makes sense to carry a shotgun in a way that it doesn't in SoC, I guess.

the most moronic thing about CoP is that it happens in 2012 or whenever, at a point where the military already has plenty of experience with the Zone thanks to competent military stalkers
it would have been a lot better had it happened in 2007 or something, when the Zone was a new phenomenon and the military didn't know what was happening there

I don't think it's implied that they ever flew aircraft over the Zone in the same manner they did at the end of SoC

        >but i don't know know if i have it in me for another if there aren't some big switch ups
CS feels really chaotic coming from SoC. You're fighting human enemies constantly and unless you install a vanilla+ mod that fixes the glitches and improves the guns artificially awful accuracy it's probably going to be dreadful for you. However with said vanilla+ mod (i don't remember the exact name, it's the unnoficial patch mod basically) i found it extremely satisfying and fun to play.
To give you an idea: without that mod the pistols don't have iron sights, something SoC had but this game bafflingly decided to remove. Also there's an unkillable machinegun turret that kills you super fast and you have to run away from when you first enter cordon, without the mod it's trial and error surviving it, the mod fixes it.

After this game, they upgraded the engine and gave the games a light facelift overall.
CS introduced a dynamic faction system wherein as soon as a fresh save is made all of the AI map-wide starts pushing at each other’s borders. It can play out pretty differently each save. It adds a lot to making the setting feel alive but it occasionally falls a bit into “this settlement needs your help” territory with the factions you choose to befriend. Its also easily the buggiest game.
CoP is definitely my favorite in the series. Everything feels better. The guns are better, they’re more customizable, the maps are prettier, the anomalies are weirder. If you only tried one more in the series I’d say that one is worth it.
