You have it wrong. It was universally praised at the beginning because everyone was staring off into an ocean. Then everyone realized it was as deep as a puddle. I think it's unfixable the core mechanics aren't even right and then the quests were gay. I remember doing the gang quest where they turned out to be wannabe narcs and it doesn't let you viciously murder everyone. I put my controller down and never picked it up after that.
UC Vanguard quest line is so kino and I've just accepted that there's unfortunately no good discussion to be had online about this game. There was a bit briefly after launch but it's all gone now.

I'd argue you can make a human-only scifi setting work, but you'd need to make some very compelling factions and characters for this to work. And I wouldn't expect anything from Emil moronolio when it comes to this.
Human-only scifi is the best scifi in fact, but you need a modicum of creativity to be able to pull it off. Look at Alastair Reynolds' books and DUNC for example and compare them to Shartfield
I like starfield but I can't name a single thing it did better than other games. No man's sky mogs it so hard in most elements and other Bethesda RPGs exceed it in most other elements and any other contemporary shooter is a better shooter.

The problem with Starfield is that it makes you travel too much.
Which in theory shouldn't be a problem, but since you can't really pilot the ship freely like in No Man's Sky you find yourself wasting minutes watching cutscenes of travel, departures and landings.
Plus, when you finally find yourself on land there isn't much to do, there are cities that are home to npcs but externally there's nothing interesting, the outer lands are only created to make your personal bases that no one will ever do because they are useless. And to all this you have to add that you will see dozens of loadings screen per trip. And micromanaging an essentially useless ship.
Ultimately the thing that should be the game's strong point, namely exploration, is weak and tedious.
Dude the jetpack is fricking fun and hopping from solar system to solar system isnt perfect because of load times but at least it gives you opportunities to engage with the ship combat. By forcing you to land in random solar systems it gives the opportunity for events to occur. You might get a local transmission or you might get attacked by OP buttpirates and have to warp speed out of there

Starfield's mechanically superior in pretty much every regard to 4, though it fails in the Settlement system, half because of the simplification of settlement roles and half because it has no real fine rotation control, thanks to them removing camera-based rotation.

I remember doing the gang quest where they turned out to be wannabe narcs and it doesn't let you viciously murder everyone. I put my controller down and never picked it up after that.

A sci-fi world with only the human race is boring. Think about it, so many game or TV/movie series have other races that add something extra.
Even Kingdom Come, despite being realistic, inserts subsets of culture to be interested in.
Starfield on the other hand is flat, 'we are only one race, the human race', that's the motto for the races in the game, no one is really different, what you have here are religions factions, that's all.
I'd argue you can make a human-only scifi setting work, but you'd need to make some very compelling factions and characters for this to work. And I wouldn't expect anything from Emil moronolio when it comes to this.
Human-only scifi is the best scifi in fact, but you need a modicum of creativity to be able to pull it off. Look at Alastair Reynolds' books and DUNC for example and compare them to Shartfield

I like starfield but I can't name a single thing it did better than other games. No man's sky mogs it so hard in most elements and other Bethesda RPGs exceed it in most other elements and any other contemporary shooter is a better shooter.

The problem with Starfield is that it makes you travel too much.
Which in theory shouldn't be a problem, but since you can't really pilot the ship freely like in No Man's Sky you find yourself wasting minutes watching cutscenes of travel, departures and landings.
Plus, when you finally find yourself on land there isn't much to do, there are cities that are home to npcs but externally there's nothing interesting, the outer lands are only created to make your personal bases that no one will ever do because they are useless. And to all this you have to add that you will see dozens of loadings screen per trip. And micromanaging an essentially useless ship.
Ultimately the thing that should be the game's strong point, namely exploration, is weak and tedious.
Dude the jetpack is fricking fun and hopping from solar system to solar system isnt perfect because of load times but at least it gives you opportunities to engage with the ship combat. By forcing you to land in random solar systems it gives the opportunity for events to occur. You might get a local transmission or you might get attacked by OP buttpirates and have to warp speed out of there

People who like bethesda games tend to like them for their lore and exploration aspect, yet all Starfield has to offer is a copy/paste generic scifi setting, and a bunch of copy/pasted boring empty rocks with almost nothing worth exploring.
I honestly think the game would’ve done better as a vr exclusive title, as grand empty landscapes are only fun when vr is involved.
