Every single aspect and gameplay mechanic is just plain worse than their implementation in previous Bethesda games. You can pick any small or big part of the game and it worked much better in either Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, NV or Fallout 4. Quests, followers, outpost building, loot variety, dragon shouts, lore, UI, combat, skills, everything is at it's worst.

I think Morrowind is really mid to play because the combat is shit and the visuals haven't aged that well but moving slow really isn't that valid a complaint. You can increase your movement speed so much you travel from one end of the map to the other in a few seconds. Literally game breaking speed through alchemy, magic, and those stupid fricking shoes you get later on.

How many times do we have to say, the engine is the least of modern bethesda's problem.
First of, it would take ages to train their devs to switch to Unreal/off-the-shelf (plus they'd have to make a bunch of modifications to get the same sort of Bethesda quirk that people like), but it would also take even longer to make a new engine from scratch (even though that would be a waste of time).
Even then that won't solve anything, because you'd just end up with a bunch more bugs and glitches that Bethesda won't fix, except this time you'd lose on many things that people come to expect from a BethRPG (persistent items etc).
But that won't solve the fundamental issues with modern bethesda games, being shitty writing and extremely shallow game-play systems.
Also, I'd add to this that I don't think the concept of Bethesda's game philosophy is bad but they keep going wide instead of deep.
Like, I'd appreciate a game with a smaller surface area but they spend all their time making more complex npc AI that allows for all sorts of fun emergent interactions and cascading consequences.
Or, if they want to go wide, they should have some sort of meta-game to make use of that space. Maybe have a sort of Total War-style campaign where you have to take over solar systems and planets in a strategic way and you're fighting against other factions.
The issue is that Starfield trying to do too much with too little, even for a $400 million budget. Todd is too obsessed with the prospect of scale and doesn't actually let you do anything with it. Skyrim and Oblivion and Fallout 4 and Fallout 3 and New Vegas all had these same issues but those sort of coasted on both reputation and the novelty of having game worlds that big.
Starfield's biggest issue is that the scope is so big that it becomes pointless to even think of exploring because you're never going to cover it all and you're almost never going to find anything mechanically interesting to deal with.
I disagree, as a software dev I gotta say this is both an issue of incompetence and about the engine, although I'm not saying they should replace it, it's clearly filled with so much spaghetti to the point that they couldn't deliver a proper space sim experience without padding it with loads of gamespaces and unnecessary load screens.
The game reeks of workarounds for everything, and you can even see the terrain glitching out like crazy when you approach the boundaries, like floating point errors that could be solved easily if they figured out how to implement chunk rendering, but modern devs are so moronic they can't even figure that out without extreme handholding.
That said, TESVI should be a good game, CE2 doesn't suit Starfield but it would be great for a more modern Elder Scrolls game.

I feel like majority of the issues with starfield are a direct result of it being... stafield. While we can't be 100% sure, I think that random generation won't be a problem for an elder scrolls game.
TES6 will most likely be skyrim 2.0 with some added stuff from fallout 4 and even starfield itself (like the backrounds and so on), then it will be a decent game.

Only naive dumbfricks with bad taste got this game, but I'll at least talk respectfully to the people who eventually realize they were operating on sunk-cost fallacy and trying to like the game too much. Because I used to do that when I was younger, and they are probably all young people whose brains haven't finished developing yet.
It had immense hype because
1) Bethesda is weirdly overrated, thanks to dogshit arguments like "hurrdurr mods will eventually make it good", and "remember that came that came out 20 years ago? I member".
2) Bethesda makes their games around marketing checklists. The marketing department and Todd Howard know what talking points will sell a game, so their whole soulless talent-less development process is just trying to check certain things (1000s of planets! Consequential epic Sci-fi story! Build your own base that doesn't matter! Loot a bunch of garbage that doesn't matter!) off of the list without concern for or the ability to actually make it good. A good game just isn't a checklist of features, but this dupes people who want to hope it will be good before it comes out (and Todd Howard knows it).
3) Points 1 and 2 above build up hype. A lot of the early-access reviewers want to retain a relationship with Bethesda so they are already inclined to shill, but in addition to this they are also afraid of going against the crowd of people who are naively hyped. When Beshitsda fans are in full cope mode, they will directly give you a bandwagon appeal argument as to why it's good (it sold okay!).
Bethesda fans are bugs who have the worst taste in the industry. I saw this shit coming as soon I heard of the game and that is was being developed by Bethesda.

I only put 1 hour because it's the lowest timeframe it'll go down to. Playing a game for 1 hour isn't even liking the game, it's just trying it out and seeing how it feels. That's under the Steam Refund window.

I think Morrowind is really mid to play because the combat is shit and the visuals haven't aged that well but moving slow really isn't that valid a complaint. You can increase your movement speed so much you travel from one end of the map to the other in a few seconds. Literally game breaking speed through alchemy, magic, and those stupid fricking shoes you get later on.

How many times do we have to say, the engine is the least of modern bethesda's problem.
First of, it would take ages to train their devs to switch to Unreal/off-the-shelf (plus they'd have to make a bunch of modifications to get the same sort of Bethesda quirk that people like), but it would also take even longer to make a new engine from scratch (even though that would be a waste of time).
Even then that won't solve anything, because you'd just end up with a bunch more bugs and glitches that Bethesda won't fix, except this time you'd lose on many things that people come to expect from a BethRPG (persistent items etc).
But that won't solve the fundamental issues with modern bethesda games, being shitty writing and extremely shallow game-play systems.
Also, I'd add to this that I don't think the concept of Bethesda's game philosophy is bad but they keep going wide instead of deep.
Like, I'd appreciate a game with a smaller surface area but they spend all their time making more complex npc AI that allows for all sorts of fun emergent interactions and cascading consequences.
Or, if they want to go wide, they should have some sort of meta-game to make use of that space. Maybe have a sort of Total War-style campaign where you have to take over solar systems and planets in a strategic way and you're fighting against other factions.
The issue is that Starfield trying to do too much with too little, even for a $400 million budget. Todd is too obsessed with the prospect of scale and doesn't actually let you do anything with it. Skyrim and Oblivion and Fallout 4 and Fallout 3 and New Vegas all had these same issues but those sort of coasted on both reputation and the novelty of having game worlds that big.
Starfield's biggest issue is that the scope is so big that it becomes pointless to even think of exploring because you're never going to cover it all and you're almost never going to find anything mechanically interesting to deal with.
I disagree, as a software dev I gotta say this is both an issue of incompetence and about the engine, although I'm not saying they should replace it, it's clearly filled with so much spaghetti to the point that they couldn't deliver a proper space sim experience without padding it with loads of gamespaces and unnecessary load screens.
The game reeks of workarounds for everything, and you can even see the terrain glitching out like crazy when you approach the boundaries, like floating point errors that could be solved easily if they figured out how to implement chunk rendering, but modern devs are so moronic they can't even figure that out without extreme handholding.
That said, TESVI should be a good game, CE2 doesn't suit Starfield but it would be great for a more modern Elder Scrolls game.

I feel like majority of the issues with starfield are a direct result of it being... stafield. While we can't be 100% sure, I think that random generation won't be a problem for an elder scrolls game.
TES6 will most likely be skyrim 2.0 with some added stuff from fallout 4 and even starfield itself (like the backrounds and so on), then it will be a decent game.

It had immense hype because
1) Bethesda is weirdly overrated, thanks to dogshit arguments like "hurrdurr mods will eventually make it good", and "remember that came that came out 20 years ago? I member".
2) Bethesda makes their games around marketing checklists. The marketing department and Todd Howard know what talking points will sell a game, so their whole soulless talent-less development process is just trying to check certain things (1000s of planets! Consequential epic Sci-fi story! Build your own base that doesn't matter! Loot a bunch of garbage that doesn't matter!) off of the list without concern for or the ability to actually make it good. A good game just isn't a checklist of features, but this dupes people who want to hope it will be good before it comes out (and Todd Howard knows it).
3) Points 1 and 2 above build up hype. A lot of the early-access reviewers want to retain a relationship with Bethesda so they are already inclined to shill, but in addition to this they are also afraid of going against the crowd of people who are naively hyped. When Beshitsda fans are in full cope mode, they will directly give you a bandwagon appeal argument as to why it's good (it sold okay!).
Bethesda fans are bugs who have the worst taste in the industry. I saw this shit coming as soon I heard of the game and that is was being developed by Bethesda.

I only put 1 hour because it's the lowest timeframe it'll go down to. Playing a game for 1 hour isn't even liking the game, it's just trying it out and seeing how it feels. That's under the Steam Refund window.
The point is that if you limit the reviews to people who can prove they even PLAYED the game, the score goes up. Which would suggest that a lot of the reviews are from people who never touched it

You know, I played through Starfield, and honestly, I didn't dislike it. I don't think I quite liked it though either. I think my biggest complaint with it is that it feels, I dunno, not quite justified in its M rating? It feels really safe or clean. Compared to the grit of Fallout and TES especially.

I've heard this "sanitized" talking point a lot and it makes me wonder if I played a different TES or Fallout than I did. No bethesda game ever felt "gritty" to me. Yeah there was some gore like in the Oblivion gates or the fallout VATS death animations, but it was always so goofy. I don't think Beth is capable of making anything genuinely gritty or sexy, unless you're talking about pre-Morrowind that I never played.
People complain about the aurora lounge in Neon but I can only imagine the sheer cringe if they really tried. Perhaps it's for the best.
