Starting my first morrowind playthrough. I'm going with Breton, spellsword and apprentice sign. Is this a good setup for a mage with a bit of melee combat? Should I do the maged guild quests first?

I can't do this. If I somehow find out a missed something cool or messed something up regards building my character and can't get it later I will just stop playing the game if I can't go back. Like when I used all my feats on male weapon tree in motor before finding out they don't effect light sabers. How could I enjoy the game anymore now knowing I've wasted my limited skill points on skills that don't do anything for my character?

Bretons are a bit different than oblivion and skyrim in morrowind. Be aware that magic resistance only works against non-elemental magic.
I just got to the part in the story where the dark brotherhood attack you when you sleep. I'm playing a guy who summons his armor and weapons to fight. Which kind of fricks you if you can't get your magic back through sleeping because people are trying to kill you. Not sure what to do.

For noobs I would even recommend modding it so this shit doesn't occur until you are stronger. It's so poorly programmed it hurts. The assassin is def defeatable at level one though and you should hightail to the fort asap to prevent further bullshit (unless you want to farm them for money)
Really what you should have done is install the mod that delays the DB attacks. It doesn't even make sense for them to be attacking some chucklefrick fresh off the boat.
That's not the main story, that's a shittily integrated expansion. You should have started the game with a mod that delays those attacks. They weren't in the OG vanilla game and it's moronic that they start instantly on a new save.

Don't get too discouraged by the mage guild gathering quests. Remember bungler babe looks the same as the other thing. Research what they look like online if you can't find some of them. Fighters guild is much more straightforward
When you can, stock up on interventions so you can teleport around. Also get recall and mark when you can.
The game really gets interesting when the telvanni plotlines pick up. Until then you'll feel it's kind of generic fantasy adventure.
I wish I could fresh experience Morrowind again...oblivion is zero creativity shit in comparison and Skyrim is completely unworthy garbage that killed the series.

Just go with Atronach sign. Its still the best sign even with the magicka being stunted. Just do alchemy to keep assuring you have potions to cure your magicka when you need to. A Breton that can already resist magicka by 50% plus absorb by 50% is extremely powerful set up right at the beginning of the game.
