I've been replaying Arkham Knight the past couple weeks and the game is so packed with love and passion it's unreal. SO much good in it. I cant believe Rocksteady turned into this.
the thing is that the non gameplay stuff in this is actually good. like the lore stuff at the museum and whatnot is in line with their work in arkham. the gameplay is just pure aids.

The way the story is told and stuff is very similar to how the arkham games are done, it's very story focused and the alpha test basically gives you nothing to do in the open world bits. Even the games mechanics are taking from arkham to some extent (focus on combo meter, takedowns, and even a counter system). The point i'm making is that they've put a lot of effort into the story side of things and it plays out the same way it does in the arkham games. it even has riddler shit again...though the reasoning is much more moronic this time.
only really the shooting looks bad, but... that's 90% of the gameplay.
if you would have Arkham-level combat depth but unique to each character then it could be good. like Harley being acrobatic, having joker's trick gimmicks, and bonking with a big hammer. instead of being a generic "jumps around and shoots gun", which is every single member in this game.
but, that would actually take game design talent, and a lot of effort with aminations and creativity etc. rather than just slapping together a third person shooter with some popular IP and hoping to milk GaaS money from it.
At the very least make all members characters that use guns, like Deathstroke, Deadshot, Bloodsport, and Rick Flag, but no we can't do that, because we have to shill Harley as much as we can despite the fact that her shit always flops

it's kinda funny because avengers did this but the GaaS shit, the bugs and stupid character roster buried the gameplay completely
Avengers had a fair amount of effort put into differentiating its characters, but the combat itself did not feel or look meaty and satisfying. When you're playing as the Hulk, and you crash down in a cannonball onto some robots and smash the ground throwing them up into the air, you should expect that to be fricking devastating. Then you look at their health bars and it's like "yeah that did 30% of their health. do it another two times."
Batman Arkham had a lot going on that all worked well and felt cohesive. Yes, Batman does not one-shot mooks unless he uses a combo takedown and breaks their fricking arm. But he's also just a peak human fighting hardened criminals. He's going to be able to knock them out with 3 or 4 punches, which is appropriate and works for the character and the gameplay. The Avengers doesn't work because Thor and Hulk and even Iron Man cant FEEL as strong as they should be because the gameplay won't allow it. So it falls apart and immersion suffers.
The live service stuff sucked too, and that's why people immediately thought SSKTJL will be bad, but the core gameplay also looks unsatisfying and weak. It doesn't help that the traversal looks worse than the Spider-Man games (which are a knockoff of Arkham), and considerably worse than Arkham Knight. It's clearly a game that has suffered in development hell for a long time and has very little passion behind it outside of some of the story and setpiece elements. But you cant make a game that's 100% setpieces.

RPG shit in general tends to frick up action games and I have no idea why it keeps being added to games
In the best case scenario any kind of RPG-like gear system should revolve around status effects and other utility-based stuff like range, cooldowns, attack speed and that kind of stuff but no raw damage but instead we end up with moronic stat bloat that heavily pushes players towards damage, crit chance and crit damage which inevitability boils down to whatever has the most damage/crit chance/crit dmg being the best gear and everything else ends up being gimmicky garbage
this is especially bad in a game like avengers because there are builds where characters like hulk and thor had builds could out-dps other characters by a wide margin but if you didn't have that gear then those characters hit like a wet noodle

I played for a bit and this game somehow is even worse than Crackdown games lmao. Id rather play Crackdown games even third one than this shit because gameplay is legit 1:1 almost exactly the same.

I suspect that some genius at WB actually though about making their video game DC universe and made those companies shift through projects together. Creative differences,shitstorms and internal turmoil leaded to cancellations and complete redesigns. WB Montreal got Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad that was very possible WB Montreals project they worked on for years got shifted to Rocksteady who were working on Superman game so they had brainiac storyline inside Arkhamverse ready and had built already a lot of metropolis assets so they reused,redesigned and rewrote shit and made all that into SQ game. The Bat-Museum apparently has a bunch of history about what happened over the span of Bruce's career. It looks like there's something of him joining the Justice League towards the end of the tour, but the player didn't examine it. So I guess there's some explanation of what he did after Knight.
You can interact with it. I did and it says Bruce decided to join the justice league after meeting Superman and retiring the demon bat thing from Arkham Knight and realising he was ready to be in a team or something along those lines. There wasn’t a lot more than that.

I'm not an expert on these kinds of things so I don't know how I'd make it more exciting but so far a lot of it is just killing enemies chilling on rooftops
it doesn't help that the enemy design is pretty bland
Every character feels good to play but so far my only problem is that the environments feel bad to play around in. Every character has so much movement options but the majority of enemies are on kind of small rooftops where you can't really use your movement much unless you want to pointless zip around it, deadshot and harley have it the easiest since they can float in the air for a good amount of time. The other problem is melee, which knocks enemies back. If you don't kill an enemy after knocking them in the air they just fall off and down the building which makes it kind of awkward to get a kill.
I think the game has potential but i'll have to play more of it to see how many enemy types there are and if there's anything else that improves the game. The game stops you right before you get to what I assume is the first boss fight and then the only thing you can do is go back and do free roam but free roam offers very little since it's early in the game and they obviously don't want people sneaking off to the rest of the world.
I like the enemies that jump at you, they test your reactions the most. I assume there will be a lot more enemies but it's hard to say. It's literally the first 2~ hours of the game and they were still giving you tutorials for new shit.
Just played it, holy frick it's bad. Traversal is really clunky with having to string different combos together with 3 different buttons. The gunplay feels really slow and sluggish for a game that has all kinds of zoomer jumping around mechanics. And of course the characters never shut up.
Any zoomers in here? Do you like it? I'm curious to hear a zoomer perspective as I'm 33 and hate it. But maybe zoomers are the intended audience not my age group.

Seeing these Arkham knight gameplay clips pisses me off because they have wasted potential with the suicide squad game. Rocksteady have a good gameplay system with the free flow combat and the justice league heroes in the game are mostly melee users (GL uses constructs but they can be treated like batmans gadgets) so what do they do? They ignore it and make the most basic and soulless shooter instead.
God I fricking wish we were just getting a justice league game where we could go around Metropolis beating shit up as them. The justice league characters have loads of costume choices between them as well so they could justify their live service shit by selling costumes. It doesn't help that the traversal looks worse than the Spider-Man games (which are a knockoff of Arkham), and considerably worse than Arkham Knight. It's clearly a game that has suffered in development hell for a long time and has very little passion behind it outside of some of the story and setpiece elements. But you cant make a game that's 100% setpieces.

In the best case scenario any kind of RPG-like gear system should revolve around status effects and other utility-based stuff like range, cooldowns, attack speed and that kind of stuff but no raw damage but instead we end up with moronic stat bloat that heavily pushes players towards damage, crit chance and crit damage which inevitability boils down to whatever has the most damage/crit chance/crit dmg being the best gear and everything else ends up being gimmicky garbage
this is especially bad in a game like avengers because there are builds where characters like hulk and thor had builds could out-dps other characters by a wide margin but if you didn't have that gear then those characters hit like a wet noodle

Creative differences,shitstorms and internal turmoil leaded to cancellations and complete redesigns. WB Montreal got Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad that was very possible WB Montreals project they worked on for years got shifted to Rocksteady who were working on Superman game so they had brainiac storyline inside Arkhamverse ready and had built already a lot of metropolis assets so they reused,redesigned and rewrote shit and made all that into SQ game. The Bat-Museum apparently has a bunch of history about what happened over the span of Bruce's career. It looks like there's something of him joining the Justice League towards the end of the tour, but the player didn't examine it. So I guess there's some explanation of what he did after Knight.
You can interact with it. I did and it says Bruce decided to join the justice league after meeting Superman and retiring the demon bat thing from Arkham Knight and realising he was ready to be in a team or something along those lines. There wasn’t a lot more than that.

I'm not an expert on these kinds of things so I don't know how I'd make it more exciting but so far a lot of it is just killing enemies chilling on rooftops
it doesn't help that the enemy design is pretty bland
Every character feels good to play but so far my only problem is that the environments feel bad to play around in. Every character has so much movement options but the majority of enemies are on kind of small rooftops where you can't really use your movement much unless you want to pointless zip around it, deadshot and harley have it the easiest since they can float in the air for a good amount of time. The other problem is melee, which knocks enemies back. If you don't kill an enemy after knocking them in the air they just fall off and down the building which makes it kind of awkward to get a kill.
I think the game has potential but i'll have to play more of it to see how many enemy types there are and if there's anything else that improves the game. The game stops you right before you get to what I assume is the first boss fight and then the only thing you can do is go back and do free roam but free roam offers very little since it's early in the game and they obviously don't want people sneaking off to the rest of the world.
I like the enemies that jump at you, they test your reactions the most. I assume there will be a lot more enemies but it's hard to say. It's literally the first 2~ hours of the game and they were still giving you tutorials for new shit.
the slow pace is another issue, I wouldn't be surprised if people get bored waiting for the game to get better and stop tutorializing them for hours

Just played it, holy frick it's bad. Traversal is really clunky with having to string different combos together with 3 different buttons. The gunplay feels really slow and sluggish for a game that has all kinds of zoomer jumping around mechanics. And of course the characters never shut up.
They really should have made this a stand alone game and not a sequel to Arkham Knight.

Seeing these Arkham knight gameplay clips pisses me off because they have wasted potential with the suicide squad game. Rocksteady have a good gameplay system with the free flow combat and the justice league heroes in the game are mostly melee users (GL uses constructs but they can be treated like batmans gadgets) so what do they do? They ignore it and make the most basic and soulless shooter instead.
God I fricking wish we were just getting a justice league game where we could go around Metropolis beating shit up as them. The justice league characters have loads of costume choices between them as well so they could justify their live service shit by selling costumes. Instead they have four boring characters where they’ll likely sell you colour palettes.

The game is just Crackdown with some looter shooter elements and DC characters. So if you like those 3 things, the game would likely be fine for you.
PS5 performance was pretty meh though. And with how Arkham Knight was at launch, I'm not sure I would start off with the PC version.
I dont like the genre. It might as well be a football game. Every single loot game I ever tried was boring and tedious and this was no different from the 3 or 4 hours I played.
