I don't get your point. I doubt it'll sell 10M units because of pokémon. people who don't own one are going to finally buy it because of just pokémon, and the other already have one
PS2 had like 10-20 millions after cheating; shit was kept being manufactured until like 2018. Switch could even pass the real ps2's numbers. Kind of impressive.

Nice of you to tell us your unsubstanitated gut feelings, but the facts are that half of Nintendo's hardware sales come from the holiday season.
For example, Switch was at 34.5 million in March 2019 and at 52.5 million in December 2019. Even if you exclude the newly launched Lite (5 million), it's still 12 million between April and December
Let's be real, it's only pc. ms and sony's comes from sheer brand loyalism. The competition comes from being electronic devices lumped all togheter to some extent.
Impressive either way, they really did a good job this time.
the other reason is it was the only hardcore console for asian markets. the wii had absolutely abysmal attach rates and the PS3 was doing catastrophically bad early on. asian developers had the choice of making games for a gimmicky control scheme that had to compete with shovelware that costed 1/3 of what an actually good game would, waste time learning how to develop for this extremely difficult to learn hardware that most likely wasn't gonna see any returns, or make core games in your comfort zone on a console that both sold great and had good attach rates.
ds had one of the best libraries.
in hindsight, i wish i never listened to Ganker and bought the games instead. an r4 was nice at the time but not owning a single ds game sucks after looking at how much they cost now.

They would have seen the same success with ps3 if they remembered to make any games for it. Blu-ray players were around $500 when it launched. Too bad everybody already had a bunch of dvd's they didn't watch already so nobody really gave a shit about blu-ray like they did dvd.

Basically most of that shit was on the other consoles in vastly superior form. Better controls and graphics. The PS2 was an underpowered piece of garbage with an awful controller and while Sony’s first party games were good they paled in comparison to Nintendo’s first party games on the GameCube. Playing multiplat games on the PS2 was truly a miserable experience after experiencing Nintendo and Microsoft’s much more comfortable controller designs and considerably better graphics.
GameCube and Xbox owners had plenty of great stuff to play and weren’t missing out on much especially if they owned both of them or also had a decent PC. I remember owning a GameCube and waiting the six months for GTA Vice City to come out on PC by playing Super Mario Sunshine and Animal Crossing and I don’t regret it in the least.
The Gamecube/DS era was the last time Nintendo put any spark into their games. Look at Paper Mario then and look at it now. The beginning of the end was Mario Galaxy. I dunno why everyone fawns over that pile of shit. Every modern Nintendo game I play feels like I'm going through the motions trying to finish it. It's not helped by the fact that they're deliberately neutering their games and releasing the rest of it down the line as paid DLC or patches to prolong interest.
this is genuinely my favorite generation for nintendo, and i say that as someone who hates BOTW and everything pokemon. to me they've been really killing it and giving me alot of what i want.
Literally how? As a Nintendo fan even I don't see it. They've barely released any games since pre Covid and the stuff they have released are half assed and missing a ton of content. Look at how bad Mario Strikers turned out and NLG was one of their best developers.

Because it is already the cheapest one. And successful; if they were tanking at release maybe but that didn't happen. Also; Switch lite exists for that.

No, nothing can beat the DS which means absolutely nothing can beat the PS2. It was a different time, different market. It's unprecedented. Avengers needed like 22 fricking movies to beat Avatar at the box office. And Avatar needed a new type of tech to beat Titanic. The only way a console will ever beat PS2 is if someone decided to call an iPhone a console.

If the Switch wants to sell as well as the PS2, it actually needs to sell 196.18 million units when adjusting for the population increase.
What the frick is this? How do you even came up with that number
that maths works out. you want the ratio of people who bought console to total earth population to be the same.
We know the sales of ps2s and population at that time.
We know the population of the earth currently. Hence solve for x.
did we really gain more than a billion people after not even 2 decades

Sony won by literally doing nothing. Nintendo's marketing team for the WiiU was borderline illiterate and Microsoft severely overestimated people's tolerance for israeli tricks at the time, they were practically handed that gen on a silver platter.
And then Sony proceeded to do basically everything that they mocked Microsoft for planning.
for the most part, they did at least remember to not make their console always online.

I would ask the same thing about the Switch but we both know we're not going to come to a consensus on that.
at least Switch has portability and a lot more exclusives considering normies dont know shit about emulation
