How is it that this little game from 2008 is still the best in the series? Why is Bamco unable to surpass it? Great music, best cast, fun gameplay, a compelling story, and a cool world to explore. Genuinely can’t think of an ensemble cast I enjoy more than these guys.
Why can’t the magic be recaptured? What makes Vesperia this impassable bar?

Vesperia is the KH2 of Tales. An unfathomably based game.
But why? I’ve played through the game 4 or 5 times over the years, between the two versions, and I can’t really put my finger on what exactly makes it so great. It’s like there’s this weird intangible aura this game has, it’s just so incredibly comfy to play. Nothing else will scratch the itch once I get the desire to play.
Yuri being the most based Tales of protag goes a long way
Do you like abyss?
I do, but I don’t feel the drive to play it again every couple of years like I do with Vesperia
>original release didn't even have Flynn playable
Yeah frick you too Bamco
Xbox beta testers didn’t deserve Flynn
that isn't destiny director's cut
Namco knows they’ll never make a game as good as this again. That’s why they refused to give us the PS3 version for a decade. Tales of Vesperia is so good they wanted people to forget about it so they’d buy the newer, more mediocre Tales games.
Like I honestly don’t get how this is the one (1) anime game that actually has great English voice acting. Shame they didn’t shell out to get Troy Baker back to do the voice work for Yuri in the Definitive Edition, but I imagine that would have made the whole project too expensive.
Didn’t they pretty much lift the combat system from this game for Zesteria or Berseria, and somehow fricked it up?
no, they're completely different
xillia is similar
No, it was Graces that Zestiria copied and fricked it up.
Vesperia's combat is the most similar to Xillia but Xillia is faster and has less oomph.
Sex with Judith and Estelle.
Or as Yuri calls it, 'any day ending with 'y''
Yuri is Judith’s man, he very clearly adores Estelle as a little sister. Besides, Rita would never let him hear the end of it if he touched Estelle.
Is Vesperia the one JRPG that Ganker can actually agree is good?
Pretty simple, OP. The other games don’t have these two.
I seem to remember Arise being pretty alright
Yuri is based on the other greatest video game protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu
I think a big part of it is that while the cast all have unique designs, they’re also mostly dressed like regular (anime) people. Couldn’t fricking believe it when I went from this to Graces f and had to play as a dude in a fricking Elvis costume. A good comparison is Judith and Milla. Both are sexy and show some skin, but Judith’s costume is very tasteful and, at least as far as fantasy costumes go, looks like something made for combat. Milla looks like she ate part of her costume and then gave up.
>based protag
>good length and tons of content
>combat system is fun
>has an overworld
Most importantly
>one of the few HD era JRPGs that feels like a proper adventure where you explore the entire planet
The game did well, so why wasn’t everybody ripping this shit off? Is it really *that* hard to come up with a good protagonist?
>Estelle
>Judith
>Rita
Why did they all have old lady names?
Yuri straight up watching Ragou die is based as frick. Not a lot of games will bother with genuinely hateable antagonists, but this one nailed it and he isn’t even the main villain
It represents the end of the era where games were allowed to be released as full, complete products. It’s a huge game that as far as I can recall didn’t have any DLC.
>Vesperia
>complete
It took them 10 years to give us the full version of the game
the 360 version is very good and arguably paced better
It’s basically a demo
no one in the west played the ps3 version for 10 years outside of dedicated giga autists and everyone still said the 360 version was the best game in the series
What would Grimmz think of this game? I can’t play it until I know it’s not woke.
sorry chuddy tale is super woke
The thing I hated about Tales of Vesperia is the fricking side quests that require you to go to random places all over the map at extremely specific times with no indication where or when you need to go do them. That shit was infuriating.
That's like every Tales game?
>patty interrupts the pacing so the party has to play along with her annoying delusions
>the witch kid beats the shit out of a child and nobody does anything about it
I hate this cast
Patty doesn’t count since she wasn’t part of the original game
>game is pro-child abuse
>this is somehow a bad thing
They perfected the formula.
Philia best girl
Finally continuing my ToDR playthrough from last year. Redpill me on Rerise
All armors and Mary, Chelsea, and Kongman's weapons have up to 4 variants per tier. One with great stats but no special effects, one with two special effects but worse stats, a more balanced one with one effect and better stats, and the last one having great stats and two effects but takes a lot more lens to rerise and usually can only be rerised from one variant of the previous tier. Materials can be upgraded through rerise up to 8 times but every time after the first just gives extra stats depending on the color. I find purple and black to be the most broadly useful but it's up to you how to use them, I personally make one of each color for each material I have
Makes sense. And what I can make is gated by party level right?
Oh yeah I forgot that part. Some early game armor I found useful enough to grind until I could make them were Lovable for Rutee and Knight Wear for Leon, for Resist Blow and Resist Wind respectively. Unfortunately Rutee can't get Resist Earth until you return to Phandaria. But Stahn should most of the time wear something that resists water, Woodrow fire, and Philia light.
They'll very likely never create a Tales game this good and full of content ever again. It came out so long ago at this point, and I doubt most of the talent that pieced it together during development is still working at Bandai Namco. And if they are, they're probably working on some lame Gundam shit.
Vesperia truly has everything you could want in a traditional JRPG. The combat's fun as frick, the cast is great and the protagonist rules, the music's very cool and atmospheric when it wants to be, there's lots of hidden content and side quests (even if they're nonsensically paced), it has a great traditional world map to explore, and it's satisfying from beginning to end.
Honestly if you ask me, I'm just happy we got the remaster. Whenever I'm in the mood to enjoy Tales again, I'll replay this or Abyss.
Most fun Tales character I ever played as. You haven't lived until you've Reaper Knocked.
It's the most complete game. Other entries before and after might have some things better than Vesperia, but also have huge drawbacks that make them inferior.
Graces F gameplay was better but almost everything else was a huge downgrade
I enjoyed the wacky cast of Berseria more, but objectively the game looks muddy, ugly, and gameplay is balanced as frick.
Playing the dejap translation for Phantasia invokes deep nostalgia I don't get with a lot of very old game and really pushed the SF to its limits but it's not something I will ever replay.
I played the 360 of Vesperia three times, PS3 version once, and the Definitive edition on PS4 once. There is no other 80+ hour RPG I've replayed that many times, except Final Fantasy Tactics.
Ok, what version of Vespesia do i play? I'll give this series another chance because i remember trying hard to like it.
Definitive is all that's available on modern consoles/PC so that.
Wrong game
If you use anyone besides the main character you didn't beat the game
If you didn't beat the game as many times as there are playable characters maining a different one each time and never swapping to someone else you didn't beat the game
